Book excerpt: Secure in their isolated valley until the arrival of the white man, the Native Americans of Lake County and their ancestors lived for more than 12,000 years in this temperate Eden of abundance. The anthropologist who labeled them all by one name was mistaken though; the Pomo were actually 72 independent villages, or tribelets, that spoke at least seven distinct and mutually unintelligible languages. Theirs was a culture without war, without tyranny, without greed--until the Gold Rush. Like native plant seeds, they have blown and been carried and have taken root again and again. Though their history far predates the camera, the artifacts, stories, and historical images collected from this region and its inhabitants can portray, in part, their joy and pain and their powerful ability to change and endure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This amazing book takes the reader back to the 1880s author H. H. Bancroft's actual writing, in which he represented what Lake County Pomo People were like and how they lived. Now, the Pomo of Lake County, California has the opportunity to voice their perspective for the Native Peoples using their own voices and those of their ancestors. How did these people, called "savages, barbarians, and primitives" at that time, actually exist over the last 15,000 years? What made them successful? What were their unique governments and their relationship to Mother Earth? This material is written using the unique views of Bancroft alongside voices of Indigenous Peoples as handed down through their oral history. The ancestors have the potential to speak through current generations by bringing age-old songs, stories, and traditions back to life. While this book is written about the Lake County region, the story transcends location. When we shine a light on dark parts of history, we have the opportunity to reshape our relationship to the present."--Publisher's description.

Home to Pomo Indians for millennia, the region's first immigrants settled near Kelseyville. Mendocino and Napa Counties vied for ownership of Clear Lake, but disputes ended when a new county formed in 1861. The serene, natural landscape, plentiful mineral hot springs, and remote location attracted thousands of visitors to large resorts like Bartlett, Harbin, and Seigler Springs. Prizefighters came from all over the nation, including Gentleman Jim Corbett and John L. Sullivan, who trained at separate local resorts for their 1892 title bout. Tourists and residents traveled in style on the steamer, City of Lakeport. Lake County towns like Lakeport, Lower Lake, Kelseyville, Upper Lake, and Middletown based their economy on agriculture and orchard crops as well as tourism and recreation, but this ancient lake remained and remains at the heart of all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-nineteenth century the indigenous Potter Valley Pomo resided in large sedentary villages in Potter Valley, California, and travelled seasonally throughout an extensive territory in what are now Mendocino and Lake Counties. Beginning in 1890 what would become nearly a half century of ethnographic research among members of this community, homeopathic doctor and amateur anthropologist John W. Hudson witnessed the aftermath of their dislocation and dispersal from the valley following the arrival of non-indigenous settlers. Although never published, his fieldnotes contained an unparalleled dataset on plant use by a single local indigenous community in California. In this richly illustrated monograph the author presents and interprets this historical ethnobotanical information in order to provide new insights into Potter Valley Pomo society and its relationship to the Northern California landscape.

Book Clear Lake Pomo Society

Book excerpt: This source compiled by Edward W. Gifford, a professional anthropologist from the University of California, is an ethnographic survey of the Eastern Pomo, specifically those living in the village of Cigom, located on the eastern shore of Clear Lake, Lake County, California. Much of the material obtained by the author for this report was supplied by the informant Jim Pumpkin, a resident of the Pomo village of Danobidau. Information concerning other Eastern Pomo groups, as well as Northern and Southeastern Pomo communities is also included in this survey. It should be noted that data presented in this paper dealing with the Hill Patwin of Long Valley, were obtained by Gifford from an Eastern Pomo informant. The major categories covered in this source are: a concise sketch of the village of Cigom -- location, inhabitants, interhouse relationships, composition of the Cigom family, etc; marriage; occupations; chieftainship; dance houses and sweat houses; ceremonies and dances and their participants; cremation ceremonies for the dead; money; games; personal names; relationship terms; and biographies of various Pomos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1860s, the first vestiges of the resorts of Lake County appeared around the sparkling pools of the regions many hot springs and upon the shores of Clear Lake. Lured by the supposed medicinal qualities of the water, people flocked to rustic campgrounds and cabins to take the cure for their ailments, drink, and bathe, staying for long periods each summer. Within a few years, ambitious entrepreneurs bottled the springs mineral waters and built more luxurious accommodations and amenities. Although the claims of curative waters lost sway over time, resorts equipped with extensive recreational facilities, dance floors, live music, bountiful food, hunting, fishing, and childrens entertainment continued to draw visitors in droves. Families filled the resorts in summers, and by the 1940s, large group and society meetings as well as conventions began to utilize the resorts on spring and fall weekends. Though few original resorts remain, today, in 2007, the regions business directory lists 51 Lake County resorts.

Download or read book Mabel McKay written by Greg Sarris and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-renowned Pomo basket weaver and medicine woman, Mabel McKay expressed her genius through her celebrated baskets, her Dreams, her cures, and the stories with which she kept her culture alive. She spent her life teaching others how the spirit speaks through the Dream, how the spirit heals, and how the spirit demands to be heard. Greg Sarris weaves together stories from Mabel McKay's life with an account of how he tried, and she resisted, telling her story straight—the white people's way. Sarris, an Indian of mixed-blood heritage, finds his own story in his search for Mabel McKay's. Beautifully narrated, Weaving the Dream initiates the reader into Pomo culture and demonstrates how a woman who worked most of her life in a cannery could become a great healer and an artist whose baskets were collected by the Smithsonian. Hearing Mabel McKay's life story, we see that distinctions between material and spiritual and between mundane and magical disappear. What remains is a timeless way of healing, of making art, and of being in the world. Sarris’s new preface, written expressly for this edition, meditates on Mabel McKay’s enduring legacy and the continued importance of her teachings.
