Book The Overseas Chinese in New Zealand

Download or read book The Overseas Chinese in New Zealand written by Stuart William Greif and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are approximately 12,000 full blooded Chinese living in New Zealand. Most are descendants of Cantonese who came out to Otago province during and after the gold rush of the 1860s. These were not ordinary colonists or settlers but sojourners who intended to return one day to a life of luxury in Kwangtung province, China, with the help of the gold and wealth found in New Zealand. This dream finally came to an end in 1949, when Kwangtung could no longer be a secure haven because of the Communist victory on the Mainland. Thus the Chinese in New Zealand have had to come to grips with the reality of living in the Lower Antipodes. Through this study the author sheds light on the fascinating history of the Chinese of New Zealand -- now more properly the Chinese New Zealanders. The author establishes their degree of assimilation and, at the same time, their degree of retention of Cantonese culture and tradition. He establishes how they feel and look upon themselves culturally, politically, socially, etc. He measures their politization, political attitudes, social background and problems. He determines the possibility of retaining "purely" Chinese attitudes, values, political concepts, etc." -- Inside front cover.

The series continues to investigate current tax policy debates in an historical context. The papers fall within 3 basic categories: 1. International taxation, with chapters on the role of international organisations (OECD, League of Nations) and on South Africa's early attempts to address double taxation (tax treaties); and 3. Non-UK tax systems, including chapters on the legacy of colonial influence (Dutch East Indies), early developments in China, New Zealand, and the USA, an influential Canadian report (Carter Commission), development of the GAAR in Scandanavia, and the receipt of Roman tax law in Europe.

Book Controlling Immigration

Download or read book Controlling Immigration written by James F. Hollifield and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this classic work provides a systematic, comparative assessment of the efforts of major immigrant-receiving countries and the European Union to manage migration, paying particular attention to the dilemmas of immigration control and immigrant integration. Retaining its comprehensive coverage of nations built by immigrants—the so-called settler societies of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand— the new edition explores how former imperial powers—France, Britain and the Netherlands—struggle to cope with the legacies of colonialism, how social democracies like Germany and the Scandinavian countries balance the costs and benefits of migration while maintaining strong welfare states, and how more recent countries of immigration in Southern Europe—Italy, Spain, and Greece—cope with new found diversity and the pressures of border control in a highly integrated European Union. The fourth edition offers up-to-date analysis of the comparative politics of immigration and citizenship, the rise of reactive populism and a new nativism, and the challenge of managing migration and mobility in an age of pandemic, exploring how countries cope with a surge in asylum seeking and the struggle to integrate large and culturally diverse foreign populations.

  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Big White Lie written by John Fitzgerald and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the White Australia Policy, but very little has been written about it from a Chinese perspective. Big White Lie shifts our understanding of the White Australia Policy - and indeed White Australia - by exploring what Chinese Australians were saying and doing at a time when they were officially excluded.Big White Lie pays close attention to Chinese migration patterns, debates, social organisations, and their business and religious lives. It shows that they had every right to be counted as Australians, even in White Australia. The book's focus on Chinese Australians provides a refreshing new perspective on the important role the Chinese have played in Australia's past at a time when China's likely role in Australia's future is more compelling than ever.

Book The Burden of White Supremacy

Download or read book The Burden of White Supremacy written by David C. Atkinson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1896 to 1924, motivated by fears of an irresistible wave of Asian migration and the possibility that whites might be ousted from their position of global domination, British colonists and white Americans instituted stringent legislative controls on Chinese, Japanese, and South Asian immigration. Historians of these efforts typically stress similarity and collaboration between these movements, but in this compelling study, David C. Atkinson highlights the differences in these campaigns and argues that the main factor unifying these otherwise distinctive drives was the constant tensions they caused. Drawing on documentary evidence from the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and New Zealand, Atkinson traces how these exclusionary regimes drew inspiration from similar racial, economic, and strategic anxieties, but nevertheless developed idiosyncratically in the first decades of the twentieth century. Arguing that the so-called white man's burden was often white supremacy itself, Atkinson demonstrates how the tenets of absolute exclusion--meant to foster white racial, political, and economic supremacy--only inflamed dangerous tensions that threatened to undermine the British Empire, American foreign relations, and the new framework of international cooperation that followed the First World War.
