This encouragement is often accompanied by threats and sanctions for not making the grade. By exploring the ways in which one education system in Australia has mandated differentiation through an audit of teacher practices, this book provides a timely engagement with the relationship between differentiated classrooms and social justice. It covers tensions, for instance, between providing culturally-appropriate classrooms, including constructing engaging and relevant curricula, and lowering expectations for students who have traditionally been marginalised by schooling. The data for this book has been collected from the same group of teachers over a period of three years, and offers detailed insights into how a particular politics of differentiation has played itself out in the context of a ‘global reform movement’ that has focused on improving student outcomes.

Social differentiation, embedded in inequalities of power, status, wealth, and prestige, affects life chances of individuals as well as the allocation of resources and opportunities. Starting with a theoretical framework that challenges many traditional analyses, the contributors focus on four specific strands of social differentiation: gender, age, race/ethnicity, and locality. They explore the historically specific social practices, policies, and ideologies that produce distinct forms of inequality, in turn revealing and explaining such issues as the formation and maintenance of a gendered order; the privileging of prime-age workers; the penalties incurred by visible minorities in the labour market; the highly disadvantaged position of Aboriginals; and the economic decline of agriculture, resource, and fishing dependent regions. By paying special attention to political processes, norms, and representations, and by indicating how social policies shape economic functioning and relate to normative definitions, this book will interest policy-oriented researchers and decision-makers.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is an ethnographic inquiry into the qualities of and conditions for legitimate political participation in American public policy debates, specifically those surrounding the creation and implementation of educational policy for the deaf. I take as my immediate subject a 2008 South Dakota Task Force on Deaf Education, which I argue served as a catalyst for political differentiation between the administrators overseeing the school, on the one hand, and the parents of deaf students and members of the adult Deaf community, on the other. That is, participants made their experiences during the Task Force meaningful through an identification and generalization of difference. Participants treated such differentiation as necessary to their understanding of the social and political negotiations of these and related debates, frequently working hard to police group boundaries even in the face of fluid, flexible, and contextual labels that were difficult to apply consistently across encounters.
