Download or read book The Political History of the United States of America Classic Reprint written by Edward Mcpherson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political History of the United States of America This volume is intended to be a Record of the Legislation, and the general Political History of the United States, for the last four years - a period of unexampled activity and of singularly deep interest and importance, whether reference be had to the vast material interests involved in the stupendous struggle, or the precedents, principles, and measures which the Convulsion has produced. It is further intended to be a Record rather of those salient facts which embody or illustrate principles, than of those which relate to men or parties, and hence have transient and inferior significance. So abundant have been the materials, that compression has been a necessity. Selec tion has been made withthe purpose of presenting, fully and fairly, the facts as they are, and the agencies by which they came - viewing all else as subordinate. Book History of the United States of America Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the United States of America Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry William Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 I have devoted much space to the life of the people, - their habits, modes of life, occupations, general progress, and the like, especially in the earlier period when they differed most widely from ourselves. But in treating the national period I have, however, without neglecting the industrial and social features, given greater space to political and constitutional development, as in this the life of a people who govern them selves is epitomized. In my treatment Of wars and disputes with foreign powers, I am aware that, with all my effort to view a subject from a neutral, judicial standpoint, an unconscious bias may be discerned; but should the work find any foreign readers, I beg them to remember that I have written absolutely sine ira. In treating the Civil War and the great events that led to it, I have taken the utmost care to be fair to both sides; though as a native and resident of the North I no doubt partake of the prejudice of my section, if such prejudice can still be said to exist. I have refrained from using the terms rebel and traitor to designate those who rose against the government in the sixties, because Of my profound re spect for their sincerity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Political History, 1763-1876, Vol. 1 of 2 These volumes have been prepared to present in more convenient form for present reference the series of articles on "American Political History," contributed to Lalor's Cyclopaedia of Political Science, Political Economy, and Political History, by the late Professor Alexander Johnston. Lalor's Cyclopaedia has, since its first publication a quarter of a century back, been recognized by teachers and students as the most valuable compendium of information on the various subject matters considered. The task of preparing the whole series of articles relating to the various divisions of the political history of the United States was placed by the editors in the hands of one contributor, Professor Alexander Johnston, of Princeton University. During the quarter of the century that has elapsed since the first publication of these papers, they have been constantly referred to and drawn upon by the teachers and students of the subject. The articles, while presented under different headings, are characterized by a specific unity of purpose and of plan. The series taken together presents a substantially complete outline of the political history of the Republic, while certain of the more important phases of this history are presented with a detail of information and of reference that it would be difficult to find within the same compass elsewhere. The untimely death of Professor Johnston in 1889, at the early age of forty, was a serious loss to historical study and teaching in America. Book The United States

Download or read book The United States written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States: An Outline of Political History, 1492-1871 To an Englishman, particularly if he is visiting America, an outline Of the political history of the United States may not be unwelcome. An American, being familiar with the main facts and the general relations Of parties, would look for details. It is, therefore, for English rather than American readers that this sketch is intended. If it comes into the hands Of an American, his liberality will make allowance for the position of an Englishman who regards the American Commonwealth as the great achieve ment of his race, and looks forward to the voluntary reunion Of the American branches of the race within its pale, yet desires to do justice to the mother country, and to render to her the meed of gratitude which will always be her due. Should this volume find acceptance it may be followed by a companion volume on the same scale, and treating, necessarily with the same succinctness, the recent history of parties, and the questions of the present day. Download or read book An American History Classic Reprint written by Eleanor E. Riggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American History The history of the United States is unique in that it relates definitely to the growth of the American nation, and to the ability of this people to subdue and control the forces of natural environment. It is not a chronicle of the political and military development of a country. For this reason, it has been necessary to note specifically in this text the forces that have brought into existence this new nation. These forces are: First, the many nationalities that have helped to form this composite people; second, the European influences that have molded a tolerant and liberal-minded state; and third, the adjustment of old world civilization upon new-world environment. To this end, we find that the study of American history must include: First, the land itself; second, the relation of the European background to American history; third, the adjustment of ideals of religion, government, education, and industry to a primitive country; and fourth, the rela tions of this country in international questions. Download or read book A History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Henry Eldridge Bourne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples of European race. The remainder contains descriptions of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades opens with a chapter which repeats brie y the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially of those within the comprehension of the pupil of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases of the political and military history of the country must be reserved for later study. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional and Political History of the United States, Vol. 1: 1750-1833, State Sovereignty and Slavery As to my American predecessors I have one great ad vantage over all of them: I am a foreigner. This I con sider to be an advantage, though, during my sojourn in the United States (1867 I had frequently to hear: You are a foreigner, you cannot fully understand our sys tem of government. I, of course, do not deny that there is a certain something in the character of every nation which a foreigner will never be able to completely understand, because it cannot be grasped by the judgment; it can only be felt, and in order to feel it, one's flesh and blood must be filled with the national sentiment. But, however often my shot may have missed the mark in consequence of this lack of the national sentiment, though it might greatly impair the value of the work for other foreigners, it cannot possibly be fatal to it with regard to American readers, for they have the necessary corrective in their American feeling. Download or read book An Economic History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Ernest Ludlow Bogart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic History of the United States The purpose of this book is not to rehearse the events common to political and constitutional histories of the United States, but rather to emphasize the points neglected by them. The keynote of all American history, from whatever standpoint it may be written, is found in the efforts of a virile and ener getic people to appropriate and develop the wonderful natural resources of a new continent and there to realize their ideals of liberty and government. The economic history of the United States is largely the story of the achievements of a people working under free competition, untrammeled by custom, tradition, or political limitations, and whose changing conditions of environment constantly compelled new adapta tions and promoted ingenuity and energy of character. The history of this economic struggle is not one whit less interesting or dramatic than the political history of the same period, while it is absolutely essential to a thorough understanding of the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the United States: National, State, and Local The plan, scope, content, and temper of this book are in large measure the outgrowth of my experience as a teacher. My students, by the drift of their questions and discussions, have moulded my ideas of what a text-book ought to contain. This book is theirs as much as it is mine. That fact may help to explain why some features of American government are dilated upon at considerable length, while others are left as self-evident propositions to the perception of the reader. It explains, moreover, why the same problem is occasionally discussed from different angles, even though this has in volved some degree Of repetition. And if the general tone of the book betrays an optimist, my sufficient answer is that no man can be for many years associated with the American undergraduate and remain anything else.
