Book Criminal Major Case Management

Download or read book Criminal Major Case Management written by Larry Wilson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In high-profile investigations, when the suspect pool is very large, resources are unduly strained unless the pool can be narrowed down to the most likely offenders. The Persons of Interest Priority Assessment Tool (POIPAT) provides an objective and consistent means of establishing a priority ranking of suspects or persons of interest in any investigation. Created and used correctly, the tool can determine if any suspect/POI should be considered a high, medium, or low investigative priority, saving time and resources and potentially saving additional victims. Criminal Major Case Management: Persons of Interest Priority Assessment Tool (POIPAT) describes how to set up a POIPAT system for any investigation where there are numerous POIs and limited resources. Using the unsolved Jack the Ripper mystery as a sample case study, it walks readers through the steps of creating and using the POIPAT system. The book begins by providing an overview of offender profiling and the basic considerations for developing elements for a POIPAT. It explains the Element Weighting Chart (EWC) and discusses how many points each element should be weighted based on its level of importance. The author describes how to determine what point totals constitute a high, medium, or low priority so that police managers can know how best to direct their resources. He also discusses tracking how POIs are eliminated through an elimination coding system, thereby avoiding potential duplication and allowing investigators to hone in on the person most likely to have committed the crime. Finally, the book uses the POIPAT system to draw conclusions about some of the best-known suspects who were most likely to have been the real Jack the Ripper. Seeing how the technique is used in a real case, investigators will discover how to effectively create unique POIPATs for their own cases. The downloadable resources contain a template that can be modified for any type of investigation and a number of additional tools and guides.

Book excerpt: Yet these chapters of an eventful personal history, remarkable though they may appear, nevertheless form an unusual story — a combination of circumstances which will be found startling and curious, idyllic and tragic. Reader, I would confess all, if I dared, but each of us has a skeleton in the cupboard, both you and I, for alas! I am no exception to the general rule prevailing among women. If compelled by a natural instinct to suppress one single fact, I may add that it has little or nothing to do with the circumstances here related. It concerns only myself, and no woman cares to supply food for gossips at her own expense...FROM THE BOOKS.

Book Doctors for Democracy

  • ISBN : 9780521584869
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Doctors for Democracy written by Vincanne Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-03-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of the Nepali physicians in the revolutionary changes in 1990. These doctors are trained in the Western tradition, and participate in international scientific debates, yet they have always been concerned to develop a form of medical practice that was relevant to Nepali conditions, and which could speak to local conceptions about health, and so their medical practice was always politicized. Vincanne Adams argues that the commitment of these professionals to the values of science, and to public health, was crucial in their political activity, and that ideas and practices associated with the notions of 'democracy' and of 'science' supported each other. Describing her book as 'a story that explores how very fine the line is between politics and scientific medical truth claims', it therefore encompasses both the modern political history of Nepal and the role of medicine in a poor, largely rural, Hindu kingdom.

Download or read book The Devil s Chain written by Keely Stauter-Halsted and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the half-century before Poland's long-awaited political independence in 1918, anxiety surrounding the country's burgeoning sex industry fueled nearly constant public debate. The Devil's Chain is the first book to examine the world of commercial sex throughout the partitioned Polish territories, uncovering a previously hidden conversation about sexuality, gender propriety, and social class. Keely Stauter-Halsted situates the preoccupation with prostitution in the context of Poland's struggle for political independence and its difficult transition to modernity. She traces the Poles’ growing anxiety about white slavery, venereal disease, and eugenics by examining the regulation of the female body, the rise of medical authority, and the role of social reformers in addressing the problem of paid sex.Stauter-Halsted argues that the sale of sex was positioned at the juncture of mass and elite cultures, affecting nearly every aspect of urban life and bringing together sharply divergent social classes in what had long been a radically stratified society. She captures the experiences of the impoverished women who turned to the streets and draws a vivid picture of the social milieu that shaped their choices. The Devil’s Chain demonstrates that discussions of prostitution and its attendant disorders—sexual deviancy, alcoholism, child abuse, vagrancy, and other related problems—reflected differing visions for the future of the Polish nation.

Book When Doctors Kill

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua A. Perper
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2010-08-12

Download or read book When Doctors Kill written by Joshua A. Perper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would come as no surprise that many readers may be shocked and intrigued by the title of our book. Some (especially our medical colleagues) may wonder why it is even worthwhile to raise the issue of killing by doctors. Killing is clearly an- thetical to the Art and Science of Medicine, which is geared toward easing pain and suffering and to saving lives rather than smothering them. Doctors should be a source of comfort rather than a cause for alarm. Nevertheless, although they often don’t want to admit it, doctors are people too. Physicians have the same genetic library of both endearing qualities and character defects as the rest of us but their vocation places them in a position to intimately interject themselves into the lives of other people. In most cases, fortunately, the positive traits are dominant and doctors do more good than harm. While physicists and mathematicians paved the road to the stars and deciphered the mysteries of the atom, they simultaneously unleashed destructive powers that may one day bring about the annihilation of our planet. Concurrently, doctors and allied scientists have delved into the deep secrets of the body and mind, mastering the anatomy and physiology of the human body, even mapping the very molecules that make us who we are. But make no mistake, a person is not simply an elegant b- logical machine to be marveled at then dissected.

Book The Cape Doctor in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The Cape Doctor in the Nineteenth Century written by Harriet Deacon and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cape Doctor, named after the profession as well as the wind that sweeps the Cape Peninsula of dangerous miasmas, is a social history of medicine, seeking to place formal western medicine within its political, social and economic context. Besides Shula Marks' study of South African nurses, Divided Sisterhood, no previous work has brought such a breadth of material about South Africa's medical past under the framework of social history. This work provides clear evidence of the way in which the Cape medical profession excluded all but a few women and black practitioners, and discriminated along lines of race, class and gender in their practice, but it also moves beyond the classic revisionist tradition (documenting the emergence of a society divided along lines of race and gender) by providing examples of cultural crossover and medical pluralism.
