Book The Poets of the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Poets of the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by Alex; R. Gordon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poets of the Old Testament A vast amount of important work has recently been done on the poetry of the Old Testament. Thus far, however, no attempt has been made to bring home the results, as a unified whole, to the English reader. The present book seeks, within limits, to supply this want. A brief sketch is first offered of the general characteristics of Hebrew poetry. Then the growth of the literature itself is traced from its roots in the old folk-poetry of Israel to its full flower in the Psalter and Wisdom books like Proverbs and Job. The aim has been throughout to catch the heart and spirit of the poetry. Thus questions of Introduction are treated only incidentally, and by way of approach to the centre. Translations are also given of the most characteristic passages, as far as possible in the rhythm of the original. The scope of the work might, indeed, have been wider. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry of the Old Testament The following pages contain the substance of a course of lectures delivered in alternate years at Cardiff over a quarter of a century. They are not a transcript of the lectures given in any one year. For one thing, no written copy exists. For another, a good deal had to be given to University students which is quite unnecessary for the general public, especially in tracing the scientific study of Hebrew poetic form. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of the Old Testament Individual prophets have received brilliant ex position at the hands of English-speaking scholars. There is still room, however, for a comprehensive treatment of the subject, which allows the prophets to speak for themselves. The present volume seeks to fulfil this ideal, within necessary limits. Thecourse of prophecy is traced from its first morning beams, tillthelightdisappearsintherosyflushoi Apocalypse; the prophets are set on the back ground of their time, and portrayed in their sharply contrasted personality and experience; but the stress throughout is laid on translations of their most significant utterances, which reproduce as nearly. As possible the sense and rhythm of the original. The volume is thus, in subject-matter and method of treatment alike, the complement of my previous work on The Poets of the Old Testament, to which the reader is referred for a statement of general principles. Download or read book The Bible and Poetry written by Michael Edwards and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nahbion: Or the Bible and the Poets Bearing in mind the highly figurative character of the Apocalypse, and the great difficulty which it consequently presents to the understanding of the young, and at the same time desirous of not leaving this sacred book unrepresented in our volume, we have thought it best to give very brief extracts from those portions of the Vision of St. John which seem to be most suited for the particular purpose which we have in View. We venture, in conclusion, to hope that this volume, containing as it does a large portion of Holy Scripture in Scripture words, will be the means, with God's blessing, of endearing to many young hearts the sweet story of old, making them to love from childhood that Book which will in after years be a.
