DEED by Justin Wymer is the winner of the 2018 Elixir Press Antivenom Poetry Award. DA Powell had this to say about it: "Justin Wymer's poems make a faith of longing, shedding clothes, body, chrysalis to commune deeply with the world. He takes his cues from winged things--angels, locusts, starlings, wasps--and lifts out over rivers, thickets, fields with one eye on terrestrial things and one eye on the open air. 'My soul is a law, on fire, the kiss in the air before dragonflies fold their wings in vague human anguish.' This is a magnificent, moving testament of living." Wymer's work has appeared in such publications as Kenyon Review, Conjunctions, and Boston Review.

Book Confessions of a Plagiarist

Download or read book Confessions of a Plagiarist written by Kevin Kopelson and published by Counterpath. This book was released on 2012 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Memoir. In college, Kevin Kopelson passed off a paper by his older brother Robert as his own. In graduate school, he plagiarized nearly an entire article from a respected scholar, and then later, having met her and been asked if he would send something for her to read, sent that essay he had plagiarized from her work. This is not to mention the many instances in which he quoted others extensively, not passing their work off as his own, but substituting it for his own words when his words were what were called for. Until recently, such plagiarisms and thefts had been his most shameful secret, shared only with a trusted few. But then Kopelson—now an English professor and the author of a number of respected books, most recently 2007's Sedaris—wrote an essay entitled "My Cortez," which was published in the London Review of Books in 2008. It was a satirical literary confession, an exploration of Kopelson's personal and professional life via his various acts of plagiarism. From that jumping off point and exploring also his other vices, CONFESSIONS OF A PLAGIARIST is the compelling and clever retelling (not to mention renovation) of Kopelson's life, one transgression at a time.

Book excerpt: Deck of Deeds is comprised of seventy poetic prose image captions (without images) whose titles are inspired by the popular Latin American loteria card game. Written by a poet who logs in an average of ten thousand miles of air travel each month working as a union trainer and coordinator throughout the U.S., the “cards” reflect a dizzying array of cultural-geographic locations, each one acting as a scene-setter for highly dystopian portraits of “people” caught in a tangle of industry-specific “predicaments.”

Download or read book Mr Deeds Goes to Town written by Clarence Kelland and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE BOOK THAT INSPIRED THE ACADEMY AWARD WINNING MOVIE CLASSIC. "What happens when a young man inherits $20,000,000 and finds no greater joy than playing the tuba in a small town band? Everybody thinks he's crazy! But when he goes to town, he goes to town! The comedy of the year." -Harrisonburg Telegraph How Clarence Budington Kelland created Mr. Deeds: "As I sat around for days on end, I dreamed up a pet character, myself no doubt, who was young and fine and suddenly acquired a bit of money. Then he went- to a strange city and did good things with it in romantic ways. Thirty-odd years later that brain child blossomed into print in "Opera Hat" and onto the screen as "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town." You may have already met Mr. Deeds in the Academy Award winning 1930s film, "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town," or the 1960s television series of the same name, or the recent Adam Sandler movie remake, "Mr. Deeds." But whether you have met him before or not, here is the original Mr. Deeds, the poetry writing, tuba playing man from Mandrake Falls, exactly as novelist Clarence Budington Kelland created him - with a small seasoning of mystery and a dash of murder they left out of the movie versions. Here is Clarence Budington Kelland, the old master of romantic comedy and romantic suspense, with his signature oddball characters, madcap satire, and pixilated characters. Among the latter: Victor Semple, a long-lost great-uncle who left $20,000,000 to Longfellow Deeds of Mandrake Falls VT. Lathrop Cedar, senior member of the firm of Cedar, Cedar, Cedar and McGonigle, Attorneys at Law, representing the Victor Semple's estate - Mr. Cedar was even more pedantic than his title suggested. Madame Pomponi, the world trembled when this super diva threw one of her famed volcanic fits - but not Mr. Deeds. Simonetta Petersen, personal secretary to Madame Pomponi - this cynical child of the Big Apple would never have believed she could fall for a sincere hick from small town USA, until she met Mr. Deeds. Percival Dide, one of the most highly regarded authors of the age, he had no idea anyone actually make money writing, until he learned how much Mr. Deeds got paid for composing greeting card verse. Nina Motti, the opera company's leading dancer - she died in the second act, in her dressing room, with a bullet through her heart. Mario Granzi, an attorney not Quite of the bracket of Cedar, Cedar, Cedar and McGonigle, who claimed to represent Mrs. Victor Semple, or at least his common-law-wife, or at least they lived together "man and wife" - and who anyway was entitled to s a substantiaL settlement from the estate. "Deeds, a verse writing young man in Mandrake Falls, who plays the tuba in the town band, falls heir to $20,000,000. His arrival in New York to claim the fortune surrounds him with a nest of grafters who are out to leave Deeds as little of his money as possible. Deeds' eccentricities provide a field day." - Minneapolis Star "Longfellow Deeds, a simple tuba-playing, verse-writing young man in Vermont, is suddenly left $201000,000. What he does with the money and what happens to him in New York give the plot unexpected twists, turns and suspense." -Philadelphia Inquirer Inspiration for the movie Pauline Kael in the New Yorker, called "a homey fantasy demonstrating the triumph of small-town values over big-city cynicism. Longfellow Deeds the sincere greeting-card poet from New England comes to New York."

Book excerpt: A haunting and peculiar travelogue, Deeds of the Utmost Kindness employs forms as diverse as haiku and prose poetry in settings that range from Japan to the rural Ozarks to contemporary Moscow. The compelling strangeness of the poems' precise details exposes varied rhythms of thought and illustrated how different logics work in the metaphoric structures of changing places. Yet behind the uneasy sense of dislocation felt by the constant traveler lies the personal, essentially moral, voice of the poet as observer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tina and Charlie were typical children until the untimely death of their mother. They were young when she passed, and her death was a forbidden topic of conversation in their home. When a beautiful woman named Doris enters their lives, seemingly by accident, they are all too accepting. Never really grieving the loss of their mother, Doris seems an adequate substitute. All begins well, but soon Tina and Charlie discover Doris has a dark side contrary to the loving, mother–like facade she put on during their father's courtship of her. Behind her extravagant beauty, a murderous, cannibalistic being was emerging. Doris's true nature was subtle in the beginning but after their father's death would become the violent reality they would mature with. After a deliberate, opportune, and tragic fire consumes their home, the secrets buried within would reveal itself. Along with the fire comes a sense of relief that their nightmare has ended. Tina manages to move on with her life, becoming a caregiver for the elderly. She takes on her last client, Ms. Turner, a feeble, old burn victim. Strange events start happening in her client's home. Tina wonders if the unexplained events at Ms. Turner's are somehow related to her past. One day while snooping around Ms. Turner's house, the truth is discovered. Now Tina must survive the influence Doris left on her physical safety and mental well–being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominee for the 2021 NAACP Image Award in Poetry An elegiac and moving meditation on the ways in which we witness "bodies" of grief and healing. Poems and photographs collide in this intimate collection, challenging the invisible, indefinable ways mourning takes up residence in a body, both before and after life-altering loss. In radiant poems—set against the evocative and desperate backdrop of contemporary events, pop culture, and politics—Rachel Eliza Griffiths reckons with her mother’s death, aging, authority, art, black womanhood, memory, and the American imagination. The poems take shape in the space where public and private mourning converge, finding there magic and music alongside brutality and trauma. Griffiths braids a moving narrative of identity and its possibilities for rebirth through image and through loss. A photographer as well as a poet, Griffiths accompanies the fierce rhythm of her verses with a series of ghostly, imaginative self-portraits, blurring the body’s internal wilderness with landscapes alive with beauty and terror. The collision of text and imagery offers an associative autobiography, in which narratives of language, absence, and presence are at once saved, revised, and often erased. Seeing the Body dismantles personal and public masks of silence and self-destruction to visualize and celebrate the imperfect freedom of radical self-love.

Book Days and Deeds

Download or read book Days and Deeds written by Burton E. Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Deeds: A Book Verse for Children's Reading and Speaking The attempt has been made to gather together in this volume the really significant poetry relating to American holidays and to great Americans, especially such as is suited for recitation. To this has been added a short anthology of the seasons, and some eight or ten lyrics with which every one ought to be familiar, and which did not fall under any of the other headings. It is inevitable that in a collection of this sort, nearly every reader will miss some personal favorites. The question of length has excluded a number of such sterling poems as "Grandmother's Story of Bunker-Hill Battle" and "How Old Brown Took Harper's Ferry," which were put aside regretfully only after it became apparent that their inclusion would stretch the volume beyond the utmost limit allowed for it. Indeed, at the end, it became necessary to sacrifice many well-loved poems; and this, it may be added, the compilers found by far the most trying part of their task. Still it is believed that the collection will be found fairly complete, especially with the use of the cross-references which are given. The genesis of the volume was in the never-ceasing demand at an Ohio library for poetry suited for holiday and special exercises in the schools, and the primary object in undertaking it was to substitute really worthy verse for the rhymes and jingles usually offered children. No pretence is made, of course, that everything included here is good poetry - indeed, in several instances, selections which are not poetry at all absolutely demanded admission because of peculiar appropriateness - but, as a whole, it is hoped that the volume will be found elevating, stimulating, and inspiring. Download or read book Brave Deeds written by David Abrams and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Fobbit: “A stirring, sardonic war story . . . Mordantly funny and harrowing . . . Reminiscent of such classic war novels as Catch-22” (Tampa Bay Times). A Military Times Best Book of 2017, Brave Deeds is a compelling novel of war, brotherhood, and America. Spanning eight hours, the novel follows a squad of six AWOL soldiers as they attempt to cross war-torn Baghdad on foot to attend the funeral of their leader, Staff Sergeant Rafe Morgan. As the men make their way to the funeral, they recall the most ancient of warriors yet are a microcosm of twenty-first-century America, and subject to the same human flaws as all of us. Drew is reliable in the field but unfaithful at home; Cheever, overweight and whining, is a friend to no one—least of all himself; and platoon commander Dmitri “Arrow” Arogapoulos is stalwart, yet troubled with questions about his own identity and sexuality. Emotionally resonant, true-to-life, and thoughtfully written, Brave Deeds is a gripping story of combat and of perseverance, and an important addition to the oeuvre of contemporary war fiction. “Earnest and affecting . . . The soldiers are foulmouthed, sex-obsessed and fiercely loyal for reasons they can’t quite articulate—in other words, packed with young American male authenticity. Abrams’s prose is relaxed and conversational, with a few scattered literary nuggets that add heft, like chunks of beef in a vegetable soup. . . . The mash-up works, and Abrams’s voice is clear and strong.” —Brian Castner, The Washington Post “Outstanding . . . With a little bit of humor and bumbling grace, these six soldiers magnify what is both beautiful and despairing about the American military.” —Missoulian
