Book Literary Symbiosis

Download or read book Literary Symbiosis written by David Cowart and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is only the unimaginative who ever invents," Oscar Wilde once remarked. "The true artist is known by the use he makes of what he annexes, and he annexes everything." Converying a similar awareness, James Joyce observes in Finnegan's Wake that storytelling is in reality "stolen-telling," that art always involves some sort of "theft" or borrowing. Usually literary borrowings are so integrated into the new work as to be disguised; however, according to David Cowart, recent decades have seen an increasing number of texts that attach themselves to their sources in seemingly parasitic—but, more accurately, symbiotic—dependence. It is this kind of mutuality that Cowart examines in his wide-ranging and richly provocative study Literary Symbiosis. Cowart considers, for instance, what happens when Tom Stoppard, in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, rewrites Hamlet from the point of view of its two most insignificant characters, or when Jean Rhys, in Wide Sargasso Sea, imagines the early life of Bertha Rochester, the mad-woman in the attic in Jane Eyre. In such works of literary symbiosis, Cowart notes, intertextuality surrenders its usual veil of near invisibility to become concrete and explicit—a phenomenon that Cowart sees as part of the postmodern tendency toward self-consciousness and self-reflexivity. He recognizes that literary symbiosis has some close cousins and so limits his compass to works that are genuine reinterpretations, writings that cast a new light on earlier works through "some tangible measure of formal or thematic evolution, whether on the part of the guest alone or the host and guest together." Proceeding from this intriguing premise, he offers detailed readings of texts that range from Auden's "The Sea and the Mirror," based on The Tempest, to Valerie Martin's reworking of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as Mary Reilly, to various fictions based on Robinson Crusoe. He also considers, in Nabokov's Pale Fire, a compelling example of text and parasite-text within a single work. Drawing on and responding to the ideas of disparate thinkers and critics—among them Freud, Harold Bloom, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida, Hillis Miller, and Henry Louis Gates Jr.—Cowart discusses literary symbiosis as Oedipal drama, as reading and misreading, as deconstruction, as Signifying, and as epistemic dialogue. Although his main examples come from the contemporary period, he refers to works dating as far back as the classical era, works representing a range of genres (drama, fiction, poetry, opera, and film). The study of literary symbiosis, Cowart contends, can reveal much about the dynamics of literary renewal in every age. If all literature redeems the familiar, he suggests, literary symbiosis redeems the familiar in literature itself.

Book excerpt: March, 2000, the whole world watched the political tug-of-war between Fidel Castro and the exiled Cuban community over a little rafter, Elian Gonzalez, who was the sole survivor of the perilous journey across the Florida Straits. The controversies surrounding the arrival of this little boy swept over Miami. In the midst of this highly charged political climate, people were falling in love, drug deals were going bad, and the Cuban elderly were dying, surrendering their dreams of returning to a Castro free Cuba. Crossing Into the Land of Saints is a wonderful and realistic portrayal of a Cuban family, the Santeria religion, and the political and cultural differences within the exiled Cuban community. Meet the three generations of the Lopez-Zayas family as they struggle with the dying wish of the family's matriarch, Cheita, to be laid to rest in her homeland. Cristobal, her brother, has agreed to honor Cheita's dying wish, sending the family into a stormy adventure. Roli is a young, humorous, Cuban American man who grew up in Boston, and finds himself seduced by a voluptuous and sensual Cuban waitress. Alina, Roli's sister, becomes Cristobal's partner, along with Roli, to bury Cheita in Cuba. In order to realize Cheita's wish, the family must overcome their differences, the political tensions of that time, the stormy waters of the Florida Straits, and the dangerous Cuban military, which during the Elian Gonzalez controversy was on the hyper-alert against "unwanted" American influences. Their journey back to Cuba, the land of saints, transforms this family in ways they could not foresee. Crossing Into the Land of Saints promises to take you along this journey, and transform you as well.

Book excerpt: The authors have combined their experiences to produce another series of poems that are brutally honest and get right to the core of these complex issues. They make it quite clear that there are no simple solutions in this arena of healthcare. They have taken a rather different approach with this final volume in the trilogy by deviating into a treatise trying to explain therapeutic approaches to addiction. At the same time, they attempt to show its use as a very loose template for supporting people with other mental health issues.

Book excerpt: Symbiosis is the subject and art of this collaborative book by poet Barbara Guest and painter Laurie Reid. In this new Kelsey St. edition, Guest reflects on her commitment to the collaborative process: "When writers associate with other forms of art, symbiosis is established, as in Nature, where dissimilar organisms live productively together." The poems are printed in three-dimensional letterpress forms, while Reid's lines are lithographically reproduced, a process sympathetic to the shifts of her book-length drawing, which is brushed in water and pigment across rag papers.

Book Symbiotic Planet

  • Author : Lynn Margulis

Download or read book Symbiotic Planet written by Lynn Margulis and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Charles Darwin's theory of evolution laid the foundations of modern biology, it did not tell the whole story. Most remarkably, The Origin of Species said very little about, of all things, the origins of species. Darwin and his modern successors have shown very convincingly how inherited variations are naturally selected, but they leave unanswered how variant organisms come to be in the first place. In Symbiotic Planet, renowned scientist Lynn Margulis shows that symbiosis, which simply means members of different species living in physical contact with each other, is crucial to the origins of evolutionary novelty. Ranging from bacteria, the smallest kinds of life, to the largest -- the living Earth itself -- Margulis explains the symbiotic origins of many of evolution's most important innovations. The very cells we're made of started as symbiotic unions of different kinds of bacteria. Sex -- and its inevitable corollary, death -- arose when failed attempts at cannibalism resulted in seasonally repeated mergers of some of our tiniest ancestors. Dry land became forested only after symbioses of algae and fungi evolved into plants. Since all living things are bathed by the same waters and atmosphere, all the inhabitants of Earth belong to a symbiotic union. Gaia, the finely tuned largest ecosystem of the Earth's surface, is just symbiosis as seen from space. Along the way, Margulis describes her initiation into the world of science and the early steps in the present revolution in evolutionary biology; the importance of species classification for how we think about the living world; and the way "academic apartheid" can block scientific advancement. Written with enthusiasm and authority, this is a book that could change the way you view our living Earth.

Book The Poetics of Slavdom

Download or read book The Poetics of Slavdom written by Zdenko Zlatar and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1400 and 1878, the majority of Southern Slavic peoples endured several centuries of Ottoman rule. In the nineteenth century there was a movement among both the Croats and the Serbs to set aside regional, ethnic, religious, and cultural differences in order to work together toward the liberation of all the Southern Slavs from the Ottoman yoke. These volumes explore how the masterpieces of two leading poets among the Croats and Serbs - Ivan Mazuranić (1814-1890) and Petar II Petrović Njegos (1813-1851), who was Prince-Bishop of Montenegro from 1830-1851 - dealt with the Southern Slavs' relationship to Islam in their greatest poetic works, The Death of Smail-agha Čengić and The Mountain Wreath, respectively.

Book Symbiosis of Heart Soul Eclipsed Edition

Download or read book Symbiosis of Heart Soul Eclipsed Edition written by Nate McCallum and published by . This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over five frivolous years have come five fretful books containing the stories of my life. Since releasing my first book, "The Universe He Carried", in 2018 I have found poetry as a guiding force in my life as a means for my self-expression, self-reflection, and betterment of my health. So much of my poetry has been enlaced in my shame, denial, pain, and heartache, however, never were stories revolving around the beauty surrounding my life consistent. "Symbiosis of Heart & Soul" is a love letter and celebration of my monumental fifth poetry collection to highlight that even the dark thoughts can be lessons learned with hope still standing. It's the stories that extend over the course of a year in growing and learning what it means to be human once again. "Symbiosis of Heart & Soul - Eclipsed Edition" is the complete picture of the healing I underwent and includes twenty poems originally meant for the initial release that I decided to reserve for their subject matter. However, one year later I can sit back and understand these are poems that add much more perspective to my life. What once belonged to me, now belongs for the world to see. Now sit back, take a deep breath, and prepare for a deep dive into the stories that have shaped the individual I now am and am still becoming. It's time to experience what it means to have my very own symbiosis eclipse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of Poetic Symbiosis have written a second volume of poems on the theme of living with addiction and mental illness. They have produced this volume in record time despite the prevailing pandemic and its adverse effect on the general positivity that many of us experience. This is a testimony to their determination towards their own recovery while providing an inspiration to us all. It is not an easy road but, through their well-constructed poems, they show that it can be done. They don't pull any punches but they do offer hope. This second volume retains the readable and engaging style of the first. It is informative and entertaining, despite the dark nature of its background. Download or read book The Poetics of Imitation written by Patricia A. Rosenmeyer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western literature knows the anacreontic poems best in the translations or adaptations of such poets as Ronsard, Herrick and Goethe. This collection of poems, once assumed to be the work of Anacreon himself, was considered unworthy of serious attention after the poems were proved to be late Hellenistic and early Roman imitations by anonymous writers. This full-length treatment of the anacreontic corpus, first published in 1992, explores the complex poetics of imitation which inspired anacreontic composition for so many centuries in antiquity. The author reassesses Anacreon's own oeuvre, and then discusses the system of selective imitation practised by the anacreontic poets. The book explores what light the corpus can shed on ancient literary genres, intertextual influences, and the literary manifestations of symposiastic and erotic ideals in a post-classical society which looks back to an archaic model as its guiding force.A full translation of the anacreontic collection is included as an appendix and all Greek and Latin is translated.

Book Krishna Sobti s Views on Literature and the Poetics of Writing

Download or read book Krishna Sobti s Views on Literature and the Poetics of Writing written by Rosine-Alice Vuille and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a writer discuss her creative process and her views on a writer’s role in society? How do her comments on writing relate to her works? The Hindi writer Krishna Sobti (1925-2019) is known primarily as a novelist. However, she also extensively wrote about her views on the creative process, the figure of the writer, historical writing, and the position of writers within the public sphere. This study is the first to examine in detail the relationship between Sobti’s views on poetics as exposed in her non-fictional texts and her own literary practice. The writer’s self-representation is analysed through her use of metaphors to explain her creative process. Sobti’s construction of the figure of the writer is then put in parallel with her idiosyncratic use of language as a representation of the heterogeneous voices of her characters and with her conception of literature as a space where time and memory can be "held." At the same time, by delving into Sobti’s position in the debate around "women’s writing" (especially through the creation of a male double, the failed writer Hashmat), and into her views on literature and politics, this book also reflects on the literary debates of the post-Independence Hindi literary sphere.

Against the large background of historical values in western and world culture, Talvet inveighs against monologues and grand narratives launched by Western centers, envisaging instead a cultural symbiosis that would create a new and fertile dialogue between the centers, borders, and peripheries of the world, enrich cultural sensibility, and broaden concern for the Other."--BOOK JACKET.
