A woman's duties as sister and daughter continued, basically unchanged, even after she had assumed the roles of wife and mother. This created a female-centered kin network which went far beyond the fragile nuclear family, and which insured lifelong security in what men and women viewed as an essentially hostile world. The female family is vividly portrayed in True Sisterhood, where Marilyn Ferris Motz examines the lives of white Protestant native-born American women living in Michigan between 1820 and 1920 and the kinship networks to which they belonged—networks that often extended east to New England and the Middle Atlantic states and westward as far as California. The University of Michigan's Bentley Library collections of the correspondence, diaries, photographs, and other documents of numerous family groups have provided the primary resources for this study of thirty extended families. Focusing on personal interaction within the family, Motz shows women playing an active role that is not suggested by observation of residence patterns, household composition, or legal distribution of authority. The book reveals women's use of language to maintain personal relationships, to persuade and manipulate, and to obtain support. Thus the power base of the woman, her informal networks based on personal interaction, persuasion, and sense of obligation, become visible. True Sisterhood shows that women's influence was not merely a fabrication of the literature of what has come to be termed the "cult of domesticity" but was a reality within many nineteenth-century homes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Elizabeth Margaret Chandler: With a Memoir of Her Life and Character Elizabeth Margaret Chandler was born at Centre, near the town of Wilmington, in the State of Delaware, on the 24th day of the Twelfth Month (December) 1807. She was the daughter of Thomas Chandler, a very respectable farmer, who possessed a handsome competency, and lived in easy circumstances, though he was not reputed wealthy as to the riches of this world. He received a liberal education, and also studied medicine; but while he resided in the country, he devoted his attention principally to agriculture. The name of her mother was Margaret Evans, who was born at the city of Burlington, in the State of New-Jersey. Both the Chandler and Evans families were of English origin, their ancestors having migrated to this country at an early period of its settlement by the Europeans. Thomas Chandler and his wife resided at Centre a number of years after their marriage, where they were highly respected by their acquaintance generally. They were both exemplary members of the religious society of Friends, and lived in strict conformity with its established rules of order and discipline. They were blessed with three fine healthy children, of whom the subject of this memoir was the youngest, and only daughter. But although their prospects were highly flattering, while the peaceful enjoyment of connubial happiness lightened the burthens of worldly care, the bright anticipations of this worthy family were destined to be of short duration. - The mother died while the daughter was still in her infancy. - Elizabeth was then too young to be sensible of the irreparable loss which she thus sustained. Book excerpt: In Black Bodies, White Gold Anna Arabindan-Kesson uses cotton, a commodity central to the slave trade and colonialism, as a focus for new interpretations of the way art, commerce, and colonialism were intertwined in the nineteenth-century Atlantic world. In doing so, Arabindan-Kesson models an art historical approach that makes the histories of the Black diaspora central to nineteenth-century cultural production. She traces the emergence of a speculative vision that informs perceptions of Blackness in which artistic renderings of cotton—as both commodity and material—became inexorably tied to the monetary value of Black bodies. From the production and representation of “negro cloth”—the textile worn by enslaved plantation workers—to depictions of Black sharecroppers in photographs and paintings, Arabindan-Kesson demonstrates that visuality was the mechanism through which Blackness and cotton became equated as resources for extraction. In addition to interrogating the work of nineteenth-century artists, she engages with contemporary artists such as Hank Willis Thomas, Lubaina Himid, and Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, who contend with the commercial and imperial processes shaping constructions of Blackness and meanings of labor.
