Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Morning of Life: A Tribute Dear Friends: When one dear to us has passed into the Bright Beyond, we grope about in vain search for something yet to be done, which shall bring to our spirits a sense of duty performed. But after every doing, there comes back to the desolated heart a response which is as the reverberation of a soulless echo. Such, in so far as they come from my own pen, seem the annals contained in these pages; but you will kindly accept, as the last offering which love can bring, this tribute to the memory of one, whose appreciation of the devotion of her friends was only equaled by her appreciation of the responsibilities made hers by such devotion. Book From Sand Creek

    Book Details:
  • Author : Simon J. Ortiz
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 1981
  • ISBN : 9780816519934
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book From Sand Creek written by Simon J. Ortiz and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massacre of Cheyenne and Arapaho women and children by U.S. soldiers at Sand Creek in 1864 was a shameful episode in American history, and its battlefield was proposed as a National Historic Site in 1998 to pay homage to those innocent victims. Poet Simon Ortiz had honored those people seventeen years earlier in his own way. That book, from Sand Creek, is now back in print. Originally published in a small-press edition, from Sand Creek makes a large statement about injustices done to Native peoples in the name of Manifest Destiny. It also makes poignant reference to the spread of that ambition in other parts of the world--notably in Vietnam--as Ortiz asks himself what it is to be an American, a U.S. citizen, and an Indian. Indian people have often felt they have had no part in history, Ortiz observes, and through his work he shows how they can come to terms with this feeling. He invites Indian people to examine the process they have experienced as victims, subjects, and expendable resources--and asks people of European heritage to consider the motives that drive their own history and create their own form of victimization. Through the pages of this sobering work, Ortiz offers a new perspective on history and on America. Perhaps more important, he offers a breath of hope that our peoples might learn from each other: This America has been a burden of steel and mad death, but, look now, there are flowers and new grass and a spring wind rising from Sand Creek.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Leaves From the American Poets I may be permitted to add, without incurring the charge of undue egotism, I trust, that the prepara tion of this work has been to me literally a labour of love. It seemed to me a fitting tribute to render to those Poets whose works had entered so largely into my professional studies for the last thirty years, and between whom and the mere cur sory reader, and those ofa yet immature age, I had endeavoured faithfully to act as an interpreter, that I should, in the probably closing effort Of my literary career, present a worthy monument record ing the Genius of American Poesy, acceptable to the reading Public, and one that should do honour to the Poets I have selected for representation; and to these Gifted Men and Women I most re spectfully dedicate these my humble labours. Book A Tribute to Bayard Taylor

Download or read book A Tribute to Bayard Taylor written by Isaac Edwards Clarke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tribute to Bayard Taylor: An Essay and Poem As we listened a few evenings since to the thoughtful essay "On the influence of Chaucer upon our English tongue and our English thought" which was read by Mrs. Long, the accomplished Secretary of this Society, my attention, which naturally had been drawn to the life and works of the late Bayard Taylor, was attracted to a consideration of the incidents in the story of the lives of these two poets, and to the likeness and unlikeness which could be traced between the career of this brilliant "Morning Star" of English Literature that rose so fair and still shines so brightly across the dark of four centuries, and that of our American Poet, whose recent sudden death has saddened so many hearts. It has seemed to me fitting that some notice should be taken here, in this, "The Literary Society" of our Country's Capital, of the great loss which has come, through this too early death, to our English tongue, to the world's treasure of literature, and to the literary fame of America, and I have made bold to prepare, as my requisite contribution to the papers to be read before the Society, a simple tribute to the memory of Bayard Taylor, Poet, Traveller, Editor, and Diplomatist. Between these two poets in their entrance upon life there existed great disparity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
