Book Babylonian Poems of Pious Sufferers

Download or read book Babylonian Poems of Pious Sufferers written by Takayoshi Oshima and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takayoshi Oshima analyses the two most important Babylonian wisdom texts: Ludlul Bel Nemeqi (also known as the Babylonian Job or the Babylonian Righteous Sufferer) and the so-called Babylonian Theodicy. On the basis of the hitherto published as well as newly available, unpublished cuneiform manuscripts, the author establishes a new critical text for each poem and gives an English translation. He offers detailed philological and critical notes to the texts, discussing both the textual and the interpretive issues evoked by individual words and passages. In addition, however, each poem is preceded by a lengthy discussion of its origins, intention, and plot, as well as by more general considerations of its cultural and historical background, including short but important observations on the relationship to Old Testament wisdom literature.

Book The World s Oldest Literature

Download or read book The World s Oldest Literature written by William W. Hallo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature begins at Sumer, we may say. Given that this ancient crossroads of tin and copper produced not only bronze and the entire Bronze Age, but also by neccesity, the first system of record-keeping and the technique of writing. Scribal schools served to propogate the new technique and their curriculum grew to create, preserve and transmit all manner of creative poetry. In a lifetime of research, the author has studied multiple aspects of this most ancient literary oeuvre, including such questions as chronology and bilingualism, as well as contributing fundamental insights into specific genres such as proverbs, letter-prayers and lamentations. In addition, he has drawn conclusions for the comparative or contextual approach to biblical literature. His studies, widely scattered in diverse publications for nearly fifty years, are here assembled in convenient one-volume format, made more user-friendly by extensive cross-references and indices.

Book Didactic Poetry of Greece Rome and Beyond

Download or read book Didactic Poetry of Greece Rome and Beyond written by Lilah Grace Canevaro and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here a team of established scholars offers new perspectives on poetic texts of wisdom, learning and teaching related to the great line of Greek and Latin poems descended from Hesiod. In previous scholarship, a drive to classify Greek and Latin didactic poetry has engaged with the near-total absence in ancient literary criticism of explicit discussion of didactic as a discrete genre. The present volume approaches didactic poetry from different perspectives: the diachronic, mapping the development of didactic through changing social and political landscapes (from Homer and Hesiod to Neo-Latin didactic); and the comparative, setting the Graeco-Roman tradition against a wider backdrop (including ancient near-eastern and contemporary African traditions). The issues raised include knowledge in its relation to power; the cognitive strategies of the didactic text; ethics and poetics; the interplay of obscurity and clarity, playfulness and solemnity; the authority of the teacher.

Book The Dean of Lismore s Book A Selection of Ancient Gaelic Poetry

Download or read book The Dean of Lismore s Book A Selection of Ancient Gaelic Poetry written by Anonymous and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Dean of Lismore's Book' offers a selection of Ancient Gaelic Poetry from a manuscript collection made by Sir James M'Gregor, Dean of Lismore, in the beginning of the sixteenth century, edited with a translation and notes by the Rev. Thomas McLauclan. The Dean's manuscript has a double value, philological and literary, and is calculated to throw light both on the language and the literature of the Highlands of Scotland. It has a literary value, because it contains poems attributed to Ossian, and to other poets prior to the sixteenth century, which are not to be found elsewhere; and thus presents to us specimens of the traditional poetry current in the Highlands prior to that period, which are above suspicion, having been collected upwards of three hundred years ago, and before any controversy on the subject had arisen.

Book Mesopotamian Poetic Language

Download or read book Mesopotamian Poetic Language written by Marianna E. Vogelzang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles is the result of the second meeting of the Mesopotamian Literature Group (Groningen), held in Groningen from 12 till 14 July 1993. The topics treated by these scholars from six countries range from theoretical issues to specific analyses, from broad structures to linguistic textures, including metaphorical language as well as phonic features; also, various poetical techniques and strategies are studied. The interest is more in the questions that are raised than in the answers given, and the matter of legitimization of our theoretical bases runs throughout most contributions, this being the aim of the Group.

Book excerpt: The poems of the fourteenth-century Kashmiri mystic Lal Ded, popularly known as Lalla, strike us like brief and blinding bursts of light. Emotionally rich yet philosophically precise, sumptuously enigmatic yet crisply structured, these poems are as sensuously evocative as they are charged with an ecstatic devotion. Stripping away a century of Victorian-inflected translations and paraphrases, and restoring the jagged, colloquial power of Lalla’s voice, in Ranjit Hoskote’s new translation these poems are glorious manifestos of illumination.
