Book The Poems of John Dryden 1686 1693

Download or read book The Poems of John Dryden 1686 1693 written by John Dryden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dryden was the greatest writer of Restoration England. These volumes are the third and fourth volumes in a five-volume edition of Dryden's poems and result from a complete reappraisal of the canon, text and context of his work. The modernised text has been prepared from a fresh examination of the early printed editions and takes account of the large number of manuscript copies which survived. These volumes cover the poems which Dryden published between 1686-1696. This was a decade which saw the completion of his work of Catholic apologetics, The Hindand the Panther, the major translations from Juvenal and Persius, and his return to the stage after the Revolution of 1688-9 deprived him of the laureateship. Throughout these two new volumes Dryden's language is glossed in unprecedented detail, revealing the poetic precision of his vocabulary. Together with volumes one and two they offer the most informative and accessible edition of Dryden's poetry and provide an invaluable resource for students of Restoratation culture.

Book Paper Ink and Achievement

Download or read book Paper Ink and Achievement written by Kevin L. Cope and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his forty-two years as president of AMS Press, Gabriel Hornstein quietly sponsored and stimulated the revival of “long” eighteenth-century studies. Whether by reanimating long-running research publications; by creating scholarly journals; or by converting daring ideas into lauded books, “Gabe” initiated a golden age of Enlightenment scholarship. This understated publishing magnate created a global audience for a research specialty that many scholars dismissed as antiquarianism. Paper, Ink, and Achievement finds in the career of this impresario a vantage point on the modern study of the Enlightenment. An introduction discusses Hornstein’s life and achievements, revealing the breadth of his influence on our understanding of the early days of modernity. Three sets of essays open perspectives on the business of long-eighteenth-century studies: on the role of publishers, printers, and bibliophiles in manufacturing cultural legacies; on authors whose standing has been made or eclipsed by the book culture; and on literary modes that have defined, delimited, or directed Enlightenment studies. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book The Plays and Poems of Nicholas Rowe

Download or read book The Plays and Poems of Nicholas Rowe written by Stephen Bernard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-14 with total page 1484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Rowe was the first Poet Laureate of the Georgian era. A fascinating and important yet largely overlooked figure in eighteenth-century literature, he is the ‘lost Augustan’. His plays are important both for the way they address the political and social concerns of the day and for reflecting a period in which the theatre was in crisis. This edition sets out to demonstrate Rowe’s mastery of the early eighteenth century theatre, especially his providing significant roles for women, and examines the political and historical stances of his plays. It also highlights his work as a translator, which was both innovative and deeply in tune with current practices as exemplified by John Dryden and Alexander Pope. This is the first scholarly edition of all Rowe’s plays and poems and is accompanied by 15 musical scores and 31 black and white illustrations. The first three volumes arrange his plays chronologically with the first volume presenting the early plays, The Ambitious Step-Mother, Tamerlane, and The Fair Penitent; the second volume the middle plays, The Biter, Ulysses, and The Royal Convert; and the third volume his late period plays, The Tragedy of Jane Shore and The Tragedy of the Lady Jane Grey. The subsequent volumes cover his translation of Lucan’s Pharsalia, described by Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest productions in English poetry, and his own original poetry — which was often composed for specific occasions. Each volume contains a newly written explanatory introduction which precedes the full edited text. Appendices covering dedications, prologues and epilogues, performance history, the related music and textual apparatus are also included. The edition comes with a consolidated bibliography for ease of reference.
