Book excerpt: The importance of Edgar Allan Poe to literary history can hardly be exaggerated; his genius and originality, both in terms of language and technique, influenced the French Symbolists of the late 19th century and thus changed the course of modern literature. Although chiefly remembered for his short stories, poetry was his first love, and this magnificently decorated edition presents Poe's complete poems in addition to his most important critical essays on poetry. Featuring such immortal works as "The Raven" "Annabel Lee," and "The Bells," this volume meticulously re-creates the famed 1900 Endymion edition, a series comprising the works of Robert Browning, Keats, and other luminaries. Poe's dark obsessions and fascination with the supernatural find a perfect match in the powerful and haunting imagery of artist W. Heath Robinson, whose headpieces, tailpieces, decorated titles, and other illustrations appear throughout the book.

Book excerpt: Although best known for his short stories, Edgar Allan Poe was by nature and choice a poet. From his exquisite lyric 'To Helen' to his immortal masterpieces, 'Annabel Lee' 'The Bells' and 'The Raven' Poe stands beside the celebrated English romantic poets Shelley, Byron, and Keats, and his haunting, sensuous poetic vision profoundly influenced the Victorian giants Swinburne, Tennyson, and Rossetti. This book is carefully illustrated by the famous illustrator and cartoonist William Heath Robinson. William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) is an artist whose work, whether in his well known humorous drawings or his illustrations for Kipling, Shakespeare or children's stories, is integral to British cultural heritage. This book includes among others poems by Poe : "Alone" (1875) "Annabel Lee" (1849) "The Bells" (1849) "The City in the Sea" (1831) "The Conqueror Worm" (1843) "Dream-Land" (1844) "A Dream Within A Dream" (1850) "Eldorado" (1849) "For Annie" (1849) "The Haunted Palace" (1839) "The Raven" (1845) "The Sleeper" (1831) "To The River" (1829) "Spirits of the Dead" (1829) "A Valentine" (1850) "The Valley of Unrest" (1845) and many more poems.

Heath Robinson About this Edition 71 Poems including; Silence (1839) The Haunted Palace (1839) Eulalie (1843) Lenore (1843) The Conqueror Worm (1843) Lines on Joe Locke (1843) Dream-Land (1844) Epigram for Wall Street (1845) Impromptu. To Kate Carol (1845) The Divine Right of Kings (1845) The Raven (1845) This work is a completely new edition of Poe's poems. Unlike previous editions, the poems are presented in chronological order. A short note, derived from Wikipedia, has been added to each poem. Following the poems are three essays written by Poe on the subject of Poetry and composition. This edition also incorporates the illustrations and ornaments by W. Heath Robinson from "The Poems of Edgar Allan Poe", published by George Bell in 1900. This is not, however, intended as a facsimile of that edition. This is a completely new edition. Believing only a portion of my former volume to be worthy a second edition -- that small portion I thought it as well to include in the present book as to republish by itself. I have, therefore, herein combined Al Aaraaf and Tamerlane with other Poems hitherto unprinted. Nor have I hesitated to insert from the "Minor Poems," now omitted, whole lines, and even passages, to the end that being placed in a fairer light, and the trash shaken from them in which they were imbedded, they may have some chance of being seen by posterity. It has been said, that a good critique on a poem may be written by one who is no poet himself. This, according to your idea and mine of poetry, I feel to be false -- the less poetical the critic, the less just the critique, and the converse. On this account, and because there are but few B----s in the world, I would be as much ashamed of the world's good opinion as proud of your own. Another than yourself might here observe "Shakspeare is in possession of the world's good opinion, and yet Shakspeare is the greatest of poets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original Illustrated Collector's Edition. The Complete Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Illustrated and Decorated by W. Heath Robinson. Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Born in Boston, he was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. Later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point and declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, Poe parted ways with John Allan.
