Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hero (or Heron) of Alexandria (c. 10-70 AD) was an ancient Greek mathematician and engineer who was active in his native city of Alexandria during the height of the Roman Empire. He is considered the greatest experimenter of antiquity and his work is representative of the Hellenistic scientific tradition. Hero published a well recognized description of a steam-powered device called an aeolipile (hence sometimes called a "Hero engine"). Among his most famous inventions was a windwheel, constituting the earliest instance of wind harnessing on land. He is also said to have been a follower of the Atomists. Much of Hero's original writings and designs have been lost, but some of his works were preserved in Arab manuscripts. It is almost certain that Hero taught at the Musaeum which once included the famous Library of Alexandria, because most of his writings appear as lecture notes for courses in mathematics, mechanics, physics and pneumatics. Although the field was not formalized until the 20th century, it is thought that the work of Hero, his "programmable" automated devices in particular, represents some of the first formal research into cybernetics. The Pneumatica, or Pneumatics of Hero of Alexandria include descriptions of machines working on air, steam or water pressure, including the hydraulis or water organ.

Book The Industrial Revolution Lost in Antiquity Found in the Renaissance

Download or read book The Industrial Revolution Lost in Antiquity Found in the Renaissance written by Cort MacLean Johns, Ph.D.-HSG and published by Cort MacLean Johns Ph.D.- HSG. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever increasing research evidence continues to mount. Having started my research on the connection of the Hydraulis to the roots of the more recent Industrial Revolution at the University of St. Gallen in 1989 over 30 years ago, I continue to identify additional support for it. We do not know whether the beginnings of an Industrial Revolution in Hellenistic Greece would have continued if not cut off by the Roman Empire's conquests. Neither do we know whether the more recent (latent) Industrial Revolution could have risen up again in the 17th-century without Vitruvius or Hero of Alexander's preserved writings. The point of this book is to emphasize with new findings that had the Romans not stopped the growth of science and technology in the Hellenistic Period that it would have likely continued to develop into a full-fledged Industrial Revolution. Secondly, the more recent Industrial Revolution borrowed heavily on the technology and science of the Hellenistic Period. In the true sense of the "Renaissance" 17th-century industrial progress largely picked up the written remnants of Antiquity to be able to continue on after a centuries long caesura.

Book The Mechanical Hypothesis in Ancient Greek Natural Philosophy

Download or read book The Mechanical Hypothesis in Ancient Greek Natural Philosophy written by Sylvia Berryman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been thought that the ancient Greeks did not take mechanics seriously as part of the workings of nature, and that therefore their natural philosophy was both primitive and marginal. In this book Sylvia Berryman challenges that assumption, arguing that the idea that the world works 'like a machine' can be found in ancient Greek thought, predating the early modern philosophy with which it is most closely associated. Her discussion ranges over topics including balancing and equilibrium, lifting water, sphere-making and models of the heavens, and ancient Greek pneumatic theory, with detailed analysis of thinkers such as Aristotle, Archimedes, and Hero of Alexandria. Her book shows scholars of ancient Greek philosophy why it is necessary to pay attention to mechanics, and shows historians of science why the differences between ancient and modern reactions to mechanics are not as great as was generally thought.

Book A Tale of Three Thirsty Cities

Download or read book A Tale of Three Thirsty Cities written by Jaime-Chaim Shulman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Tale of Three Thirsty Cities: The Innovative Water Supply Systems of Toledo, London and Paris in the Second Half of the Sixteenth Century, Chaim Shulman presents an analysis of three projects of urban water supply systems carried out between 1560s–1610s. The technical and economic differences between these projects resulted from external conditions not directly related to the water supply problem. Although the same basic technology was apparently available at the time in all cases, the geographical, engineering, entrepreneurial and cultural nature of each region differed. The inhabitants’ wellbeing improvement achieved varied accordingly. Much broader insights are drawn on the policies of the three monarchies regarding the initiative of and support for grand scale public works in general.

Book Industrial Revolutions

Download or read book Industrial Revolutions written by Cort MacLean Johns and published by Pumbo. This book was released on 2021-05-23 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With reference to artefactual archaeological evidence and surviving manuscript documentation of the Hydraulis, I find that a new dialectical discussion might better analyze and address the underlying understanding of the Steam Engines' longitudinal provenance, and therefore, requires a redefinition the origins of Industrial Revolutions themselves from Ctesibius to the exploration of Mars.
