Book Planting and Care of Shade Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Planting and Care of Shade Trees Classic Reprint written by James Elwood Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planting and Care of Shade Trees Many of the early plantings of shade trees are from 75 to 100 years old. Because of the comparatively short life of some species of trees used and because of hard conditions under which shade trees often grow, we are now in a period in which the shade trees planted or left standing by early Illinois settlers are rapidly deteriorating and are dying in large numbers. There is always an interest in the planting of new trees in new places, but we must not fail to recognize the heritage in trees left us by the early settlers. We have a definite obligation to care for the old trees to make them last as long as we can, to replant where old trees have died, or start replacements where the old trees are sure to die, and to set out new trees as cities progress and as new farmsteads are built. Download or read book Shade Trees and Other Ornamentals Classic Reprint written by Fabián García and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shade Trees and Other Ornamentals While the planting of a tree is a simple operation and most people have an idea as to how to do it, yet it seems advisable to point out a few of the more important things to keep in mind in the planting and training of the young tree. Soil. Success with shade trees depends in a meas ure on the soil. If the land is too sandy or gravelly, so as to be deficient in plant food or be subjected to droughts, it is important to make a large sized hole and put in a load of good loam. On the other hand, if the soil is too heavy an adobe, it is also advisable to dig a large hole and break through the adobe soil or in some way loosen it, and put in the bottom of the hole good loam and mix with this the adobe soil. In any event have a soft foundation for the roots to penetrate. If the land is not too sandy or too adobe, the hole need not be so large but always make it of sufficient size to take in all the roots of the tree without crowding them. The size of the hole depends on the kind of soil and on the size of the tree. If the soil is in proper condi tion and the tree is four to six feet tall with a normal amount of roots, a hole twenty inches in every direction Should be large enough. Had the row been of Norway Maples, American Elms, Ash or Beeches, or some other high-grade shade trees, its value would have been double this amount. Download or read book A Shade Tree Guide Classic Reprint written by Alfred Gaskill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Shade Tree Guide This bulletin will be helpful to municipal authorities and to those who wish to maintain vigorous, attractive trees on their properties. Few people realize that any tree standing beside a sidewalk, or even on a lawn, is out of its element (the forest), and that the strains and dangers to which it is subject must be counteracted in every way possible. The advice given refers particularly to New Jersey; it is applicable to most of the eastern United States. The value of shade trees. Tho it is now well established that a Shade tree has a value beyond that of its wood, or the cost of plant ing a new one, and that neither individuals nor public service agencies can injure one without becoming liable for damages, it is advisable always to avoid such troubles. Street trees and lawn trees. It is needful to distinguish between street trees and lawn trees because only a few deciduous species, and no evergreens, can be maintained on narrow paved ways, whereas a lawn admits a variety of trees and Shrubs, deciduous and evergreen, that is limited only by space and climatic conditions. On streets and lawns close to the sea the available kinds of trees are few, and extreme care in their selection and nurture is required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shade-Trees in Towns and Cities: Their Selection, Planting, and Care as Applied to the Art of Street Decoration; Their Diseases and Remedies; Their Municipal Control and Supervision During the last few years there has been a remarkable growth of interest in the planting of trees for ornament and shade. In an editorial of February 10, 1909, the Savannah News remarked: "The increasing interest in shade-trees in practically all of the cities of the country is worthy of more than a passing notice. This interest seems to be keeping abreast of the sanitary reforms that are being inaugurated. While it isn't stated that there is a connection between tree-planting and hygienic reforms, there is no doubt that shade-trees contribute to the healthfulness of a city... The shade-trees have a restful effect, because making homes more attractive. That which tends to give rest and pleasure must also contribute to healthfulness." The awakening of interest in tree-planting has been followed by the development of the movement for shade-tree departments in towns and cities. The Shade-Tree Commission of East Orange, N. J., organized in the spring of 1904, was the third in the State. There are now thirty-one towns and cities in New Jersey that have such departments. The work of the Shade-Tree Commissions, of Newark and East Orange especially, has proved very successful, and during the last few years there have come to these departments hundreds of requests from different parts of the country for information regarding methods of work and forms of organization. The cities of New Jersey may have inspired others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By their grateful shade they screen us from the too fervid heat of the sun. They abate the winds and protect us from the chilling blasts of winter. Their leaves prevent the spread of germ laden dust and help to purify the air in other ways. They encourage the birds that charm us by their song and save our crops from many an insect injury. They lend a grace and beauty to every homestead and to every roadway that they border. In short, trees around and about the home make for health, comfort, and happiness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shade Trees, Indigenous Shrubs and Vines: And Insects That Infest Them A little time dev'oted by every family to the culture of shade trees and ornamental shrubbery, would add much to the healthfulness and beauty of our city, and would have a refining and elevating influence upon its people. Every tastefully arranged and nicely kept yard invites every passer-by to a higher and better life, and is ajoy to the family forever. The growing children drink in its beauty, and make it a part of themselves as surely and naturally as they breathe their native air. Coarse, unlovely children, brought up in the midst of lovely surroundings, are impossible things. I wish to call attention to this subject, to urge its importance and give some little information upon it. Before planting a tree in any given locality, the first thing to determine is what tree will flourish there. A healthy tree is usually handsome, but a sickly tree never is.
