Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Planters of Colonial Virginia At the beginning of the Seventeenth century colonial expansion had become for England an economic necessity. Because of the depletion of her forests, which constituted perhaps the most important of her natural resources, she could no longer look for prosperity from the old industries that for centuries had been her mainstay. In the days when the Norman conquerors first set foot upon English soil the virgin woods, broken occasionally by fields and villages, had stretched in dense formation from the Scottish border to Sussex and Devonshire. But with the passage of five centuries a great change had been wrought. The growing population, the expansion of agriculture, the increasing use of wood for fuel, for shipbuilding, and for the construction of houses, had by the end of the Tudor period so denuded the forests that they no longer sufficed for the most pressing needs of the country. Even at the present day it is universally recognized that a certain proportion of wooded land is essential to the prosperity and productivity of any country. And whenever this is lacking, not only do the building, furniture, paper and other industries suffer, but the rainfall proves insufficient, spring floods are frequent and the fertility of the soil is impaired by washing. These misfortunes are slight, however, compared with the disastrous results of the gradual thinning out of the forests of Elizabethan England. Book Patrician and Plebeian in Virginia

Download or read book Patrician and Plebeian in Virginia written by Thomas J. Wertenbaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patrician and Plebeian in Virginia: Or the Origin and Development of the Social Classes of the Old Dominion The origin of the aristocracy of colonial Virginia is a subject which has caused much controversy among students of the history of the Old Dominion. It was for many years the general belief that the leading planters were the descendants of English families of high rank, and that their aristocratic instincts were their birth - right, the heritage left them by noble ancestors. Others have maintained that the best families of Virginia came from the great English middle class, and the evidences upon the debated question which have been unearthed in recent years, tend to confirm this View. The author's own studies have led him to the conclusion that but few men of rank ever came to the wilderness of Vir ginia, and that the planters were in most cases the descendants of merchant ancestors. With this as a basis he has sought to point out the operation of the economic, social and political forces that operated upon the colo nists and instilled into them those instincts of chivalry and of pride that were so pronounced at the time of the Revolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flower De Hundred: The Story of a Virginia Plantation Originally a separate district or Hundred, the place retained the name bestowed on it in early colonial days, which has been successively written Flower dieu, Fleur de, and Flower de Hundred. The Throckmortons, who have been in every generation conservative folk, tenacious of keeping things as their fathers left them, and disinclined to idle changes, would as soon think of selling the silver chalice pre sented by Queen Anne to their parish church, as of attempting to improve on the quaint name of their ancient home.
