Book The Planning of Industrial Investment Programs

Download or read book The Planning of Industrial Investment Programs written by David A. Kendrick and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report introduces a new series of research publications, the planning of investment programs, by outlining a systematic approach of sectorwide investment analysis, placing special emphasis on complications arising in the presence of economies of scale. Although the methodology is offered as a powerful aid to project identification, the authors also provide a candid assessment of its limitations. Readers unfamiliar with mathematical programming techniques will find this book a helpful grounding in linear and mixed-integer programming, facilitating understanding of subsequent books in the series. Ongoing research at the World Bank has studied the importance for investment analysis of interdependence among economic activities, with reference to particular industrial sectors. Two main conclusions emerged. First, in the presence of significant economies of scale, interdependence is important enough to warrant explicit recognition in the investment analysis phase. Second, computer technology now permits a far more comprehensive and systematic analysis of sectorwide investment problems than was ever possible before, enabling the analyst to examine many variants of a given project or groups of interdependent projects. In this methodological introduction, the authors develop a planning model and suggest guidelines for its use, which includes the ability to make decisions about size, location, time-phasing, technology, and product mix to be made within its framework.

Book Capital Investment in Steel

Download or read book Capital Investment in Steel written by William Thomas Hogan and published by Free Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author discusses the uses and sources for capital in the steel industry in the 1990s. Arguing that the massive capital investment of the 1980s will continue, he identifies areas where this capital will be spent, including pension schemes, anti-pollution measures, and joint ventures between steel companies, both domestically and internationally. Additionally, as privatization continues in the 90s, more capital will shift from government-owned facilities to private individuals. Hogan asserts that capital which was readily available in the 1980s, will be more difficult to obtain in the recessionary 1990s, but available for projects deemed necessary to prepare the industry for the 21st century.

Book Managing in Recovering Markets

Download or read book Managing in Recovering Markets written by S. Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing dynamics of business worldwide have led organizations to look beyond traditional managerial practices while at the same time attempting to retain their core competitive advantages. This development has called upon academicians and practitioners alike to reassess the different aspects of business management such as macroeconomic variables, the nature of the market, the changing features of the workplace, the new work ethos, and/or employer-employee exchanges. In this context, the book provides essential insights on industry innovations, academic advances and policy movements with regard to recovering markets in India and around the globe. The individual papers highlight potential avenues that could allow industry to better understand and respond to the global crisis. The book collects research papers presented at the Global Conference on Managing in Recovering Markets (GCMRM), held in March 2014. Seven international and 120 national business schools and management universities were represented at the conference, the first in a series of 13 planned under the GCMRM agenda for 2014–17. The book includes more than 30 research papers chosen from a pool of 118 presented at the conference, all of which have undergone a rigorous blind review process.

Book Planning for Change

Download or read book Planning for Change written by James E. Vestal and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1995-10-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has been the role of goverment industrial policy, through agencies such as MITI, in Japan's extraordinary post-war development? How has the role changed in successive phases of growth? What `lessons' can be learned from this experience by other nations, be they in the West, or developing countries or economies in transition attempting to introduce competitive market structures? These are some of the main questions addressed in this absorbing and thorough study. Dividing the period into three main phases, the author shows that policy played a crucial role in the initial period of post-war recovery. It did so not by `picking winners' but by creating a stable base from which development could occur by spreading the cost of introducing market competition over time. In the succeeding high growth period and more recently Japan's industrial policy attempts only to promote the development of new technology and smooth the decline of sectors that are no longer globally competitive. That Japan itself no longer practises industrial policy on a wide scale is an irony little appreciated by those advocating the adoption of a `Japan style' industrial policy elsewhere.

Book The Road Map of China s Steel Industry

Download or read book The Road Map of China s Steel Industry written by Xinchuang Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-03 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the principles of supply-side structural reform and current practices in the Chinese steel industry. Focusing on the general requirements for high-quality development, it reviews the evolution of the global and Chinese steel industries with regard to reduction, innovation, and transformation. It also summarizes industrial development law from a transfer route perspective, analyzes major challenges and opportunities for the steel industry in the new era, and proposes strategic orientation and implementation measures for the future development of the steel industry. The book contends that high-quality development of the steel industry must be driven by innovation, and it is essential to promote integrated development based on several aspects – greenness, coordination, quality, standardization, differentiation, service, intelligence, diversification, and internationalization – in order to reshape the industrial value chain and continuously improve industrial competitiveness. This concept is essential to help Chinese steel companies prepare development plans for transformation and upgrading. Combining thorough analysis, unique insights, and many practical cases, the book offers a guide to and inspiration for future implementation approaches.
