Book The Placentia Area A Changing Mosaic

Download or read book The Placentia Area A Changing Mosaic written by Lee K.M. Everts and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touching on the wide array of people and events who have brought life to the history of the Placentia area, The Placentia Area - A Changing Mosaic offers a glimpse of the deep history that has transformed this part of Newfoundland and Labrador. The history is a collection of interconnected stories. Geological processes forged a landscape that would feature in later actions and activities. Geology created a wide expansive beach that Basque fish harvesters discovered was perfect for drying fish. This attribute, along with its deep harbour, then ensured that Placentia would go on to function in the struggles between the French and English. And from this period, the Placentia area has evolved, playing a role in the lives of well-known characters such as Pierre le Moyne d'Iberville or Roger F. Sweetman, as well as the less known, yet equally important, women and men who simply came to make a life for themselves. To the present day, the latter has remained a defining quality of the region.

Book The Roman Villa in the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book The Roman Villa in the Mediterranean Basin written by Annalisa Marzano and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a comprehensive survey of Roman villas in Italy and the Mediterranean provinces of the Roman Empire, from their origins to the collapse of the Empire. The architecture of villas could be humble or grand, and sometimes luxurious. Villas were most often farms where wine, olive oil, cereals, and manufactured goods, among other products, were produced. They were also venues for hospitality, conversation, and thinking on pagan, and ultimately Christian, themes. Villas spread as the Empire grew. Like towns and cities, they became the means of power and assimilation, just as infrastructure, such as aqueducts and bridges, was transforming the Mediterranean into a Roman sea. The distinctive Roman/Italian villa type was transferred to the provinces, resulting in Mediterranean-wide culture of rural dwelling and work that further unified the Empire.

Book excerpt: Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.

Download or read book Healing Lyme written by Stephen Harrod Buhner and published by Raven Press (ID). This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite Centers for Disease Control estimates that only 20,000 new Lyme disease infections occur each year, the true figure, as Harvard medical school researchers have found, nearly approaches 200,000. Symptoms run from mild lethargy to severe arthritis to incapacitating mental dysfunction. And despite medical pronouncements to the contrary, extensive research has found that tests for the disease are not very reliable and antibiotics are only partially effective; up to 35 percent of those infected will not respond to treatment or will relapse. The spirochetes that cause Lyme are stealth pathogens--they can hide within cells or alter their form so that antibiotics cannot affect them. Lyme disease is, in fact, a potent, emerging epidemic disease for which technological medicine is only partially effective. Healing Lyme examines the leading, scientific research on Lyme infection, its tests and treatments, and outlines the most potent herbal medicines and supplements that offer help--either alone or in combination with antibiotics--for preventing and healing the disease. It is the essential guide to Lyme infection and its treatment.
