Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of University Extension When a new movement in education knocks at our door and demands recognition as an educational agency, it is natural and right that its adherents should justify its claims. Too often a seemingly new movement proves to be only a variety of some old agency dressed in a new garb, or what is worse, a subordinate element in education, pushed forward into a prominence which its intrinsic merits do not deserve. The new education has been heralded numberless times; in fact, it is always with us, and yet the predicted revolution has not come, and we are still following the traditional lines of education with such slight exceptions, that it would be difficult to enumerate any clearly defined principle which our age has brought forth. It is easy to see many changes in the educational world. The interest in education has greatly increased; the public are much more willing to support educational projects, both by taxation and by private gifts; the public schools have become a powerful means of elevating all classes of society; technical and secondary schools are abundant and efficient; and the great universities. State and private, have acquired an influence, which such institutions never before exercised. While recognizing these improvements, and many more that could be named I stall affirm that our age has not been original in its methods and that it has not departed widely from the educational traditions of the past. We have, to be sure, in a groping, unconscious way made many important modifications in our educational system, but the principles upon which they rest have not been enumerated, nor have they been justified upon grounds in harmony with the spirit through which the changes have come. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: The monograph explores the linguistic impact of the colonial and postcolonial situations in South Africa on language policy, on literary production and especially on the stylistics of fiction by indigenous South Africans writing in English. A secondary concern is to investigate the present place of English in the multilingual spectrum of South African languages and to see how this worldly English relates to Global English, in the South African context. The introduction presents a socio-linguistic overview of South Africa from pre-historic times until the present, including language planning policies during and after the colonial era and a cursory review of how the difficulties encountered in implementing the Language Plan, provided for by the new South African constitution, impinge on the development of black South African English. Six chapters track the course of English in South Africa since the arrival of the British in 1795, considered from the point of view of the indigenous African population. The study focuses on ways in which indigenous authors 'indigenize' their writing, innovating and subverting stylistic conventions, including those of African orature, in order to bend language and genre towards their own culture and objectives. Each chapter corresponds to a briefly outlined historical period that is largely reflected in linguistic and literary developments. A small number of significant works for each period are discussed, one of which is selected for a case-study at the end of each chapter, where it is subjected to detailed stylistic analysis and appraised for the degree of indigenization or other linguistic or socio-historic influences on style. The methodology adopted is a linguistic approach to stylistics, focusing on indigenization of English, inspired by the work of Chantal Zabus in her book, The African Palimpsest: Indigenization of Language in the West African Europhone Novel (2007, (1991)). The conclusion reappraises the original hypothesis - that the specific characteristics of South African literary production, including styles of writing, can be related to the political, social and economic context - in the light of many fresh insights; and discusses the place occupied by English in the cultural struggle of the formerly colonized peoples of South Africa.
