Book Trees in Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Trees in Anglo Saxon England written by Della Hooke and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trees played a particularly important part in the rural economy of Anglo-Saxon England, both for wood and timber and as a wood-pasture resource, with hunting gaining a growing cultural role. But they are also powerful icons in many pre-Christian religions, with a degree of tree symbolism found in Christian scripture too. This wide-ranging book explores both the "real", historical and archaeological evidence of trees and woodland, and as they are depicted in Anglo-Saxon literature and legend. Place-name and charter references cast light upon the distribution of particular tree species (mapped here in detail for the first time) and also reflect upon regional character in a period that was fundamental for the evolution of the present landscape. Della Hooke is Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

Download or read book The Place Names of Wales written by Hywel Wyn Owen and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Place-Names of Wales was originally published in 1998 and reissued in 2005 in the Pocket Guide series. This current updated publication adds some thirty entries, which importantly take into consideration more recent research. The entry for each place-name provides details of historical forms and dates; analyses each name into its component linguistic elements; tracks the later linguistic development of the name and the influences upon it particularly within a bilingual society; compares the name with similar names elsewhere, and interprets that meaning within the history of Wales and in the local context having regard for the landscape and changing land-use. In addition to explaining the link between place-names and language, history and landscape, the introduction includes a section on the significance of place-name study, and a short section to allow non-Welsh speakers to understand some relevant sound-changes.

Download or read book Primary Trigs in Wales written by John R Davies and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-12-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1935 the Ordnance Survey - the UK mapping agency - began the huge task of re mapping the British Isles. This involved building and surveying over 6500 triangulation or 'trig' pillars - the familiar concrete obelisks that frequent the British landscape, countryside and mountains. The Re-triangulation took many years and was finally completed in 1962. Between 1936-37 the survey was at work in Wales. This is the tale of how the Welsh Primary pillars came to be, the reconnaissances, permissions, construction and the observations taken from them. It is the tale of the men who did the work, toiling in all weathers, shifting and transporting tons of material and equipment and the thousands of hours of effort. The result of their work was the creation the OS maps we all know and use. Today the trig pillars are redundant, overtaken by new digital mapping technologies, satellites and GPS, they remain only as analogue memorials to a hidden human endeavour. This book aims to record their labours.

  • Author : John Moss
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword History
  • Release : 2022-09-08
  • ISBN : 1399087509

Download or read book Celtic Places Placenames written by John Moss and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Celtic Places’ are typified by some several hundred townships and villages whose names still bear the imprint of their earliest Celtic roots, but the scope of the book is not restricted to human settlements; it is also true of the many mountains and rivers that they named, and to several thousand sites of standing stone monuments, Celtic high crosses, henges, hill figures, funeral barrows and hillforts, which are all included in the book. What they all have in common is that they reflect the rich cultural heritage that was implicit in the names of places in the British Isles and Ireland as it existed before the Romans arrived.
