Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Cumberland and Westmorland Turning to the Irish annals and Scandinavian sagas, we learn that at the end of the ninth century the Vikings appeared for the first time in the Bristol Channel. They landed first in Glamorganshire, but, being repulsed by the Welsh, crossed over to Ireland, the wealth of whose monasteries was famed far and wide. The numerous Irish kings and chiefs, being ever at war with each other, could offer no effectual resistance to the invaders, and thus began the harrying of Ireland by fleet after fleet from Scandinavia, which lasted over a generation. The later invaders were Norwegians, the finn-gaill, or Fair strangers, ' of the Irish annals. They pushed into the interior and set up kingdoms of their own, and it was not until the decisive battle of Clontarf, in 1014, that the Irish finally regained the mastery in their own land. The coasts of Scotland also suffered from incursions, while the islands were completely taken possession of and settled by Norwegians. For centuries they were counted as Norse colonies, a Norway beyond the seas.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Victorians and English Dialect

Download or read book The Victorians and English Dialect written by Matthew Townend and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorians and English Dialect tells the story of the Victorians' discovery of English dialect, and of the revaluation of local language that was brought about by the new, historical philology of the nineteenth century. Regional dialects came to be seen not as corrupt or pernicious, but rather as venerable and precious. The book examines the work of the ground-breaking collectors of the 1840s and 1850s, who first alerted their contemporaries to the importance of local dialect - and also to the perils that threatened it with extinction. Tracing the connection between dialect and literature, in the flourishing of dialect poetry and the foregrounding of regional voices in Victorian fiction. It goes on to explain how the antiquity of regional dialects cast light on the national past - the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings - and how dialect study was also at the heart of the discovery of local folklore and oral culture: old words, old customs, old beliefs. And it tells the story of the three great monuments of Victorian dialect study that marked the apogee of regional philology: the 80 publications of the English Dialect Society (1873-96), an organization run by a committee of journalists and local historians in Manchester; the nationwide survey of The Existing Phonology of English Dialects (1889), which listened in on local speech in market squares and third-class railway carriages; and the multi-volume English Dialect Dictionary (1898-1905), which collected all the previous labours together, and made an enduring record of Victorian dialect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Place Names Why is it worth while to study place names.2 Perhaps a sufficient answer is found in the fact that the subject is one of unusual geographical, historical, ethnological, and linguistic interest. It is a cause for regret that men and women who are otherwise well-informed should be so generally ignorant of the history and the meaning of the names that they use every day. Book excerpt: The story of an era shrouded in mystery, and the gradual changing of a nation’s cultural identity. We speak English today, because the Anglo-Saxons took over most of post-Roman Britain. How did that happen? There is little evidence: not much archaeology, and even less written history. There is, however, a huge amount of speculation. King Arthur’s Wars brings an entirely new approach to the subject—the answers are out there, in the British countryside, waiting to be found. Months of field work and map study allow us to understand, for the first time, how the Anglo-Saxons conquered England, county by county and decade by decade. King Arthur’s Wars exposes what the landscape and the place names tell us. As a result, we can now know far more about this “Dark Age.” What is so special about Essex? Why is Buckinghamshire an odd shape? Why is the legend of King Arthur so special to us? Why don’t Cumbrian farmers use English numbers when they count sheep? Why don’t we know where Camelot was? Why did the Romano-British stop eating oysters? This book provides a new level of understanding of the centuries preceding the Norman Conquest.

Book History of the Language Sciences Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaften Histoire des sciences du langage 2 Teilband

Download or read book History of the Language Sciences Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaften Histoire des sciences du langage 2 Teilband written by Sylvain Auroux and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.
