Book The Place Names of Argyll Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Place Names of Argyll Classic Reprint written by H. Cameron Gillies and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Argyll This seems to me a valuable book, and I am glad the London Argyllshire Association has encouraged the author in what must have been a really hard work. It must be Of interest to all branches Of the Celtic-speaking people, not only to all the Highlands and all Scotland as well as to Argyll, but to Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany, where the Old language is retained, if not always as a spoken tongue, yet always in their own Old names from the same or a kindred origin. It may be of interest to even those outside the Celtic circle to learn how much of true and important history lies dormant in the place-names Of a country. Argyll is exceptionally complex in its history and therefore very rich in its names, and I am not surprised that the author found many of them to be difficult to explain, and some even impossible. The several layers Of names left by succeeding races come out very clearly. There are the bottom names Of the pre-celtic race, variously named Iberian, Pictish, and otherwise. These must be difficult to explain, perhaps they never can be explained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The House of Argyll and the Collateral Branches of the Clan Campbell written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Argyll and the Collateral Branches of the Clan Campbell: From the Year 420 to the Present Time In presenting this volume to the public, the Editor feels that very little need be said by him by way of preface. The House of Argyll, as the head of the Clan Campbell, holds such a prominent place in our national history, its records are so intimately blended with every struggle for religious and political freedom, the actions of its chiefs have shed such lustre on our annals, that any fresh fact connected with their history cannot fail to be acceptable to the public. Most of the matter herein contained has never before been published. Of the extracts from the Argyll papers in the Appendix, there were only fifty copies printed, while the body of the work is taken from some old manuscripts, long in the possession of the family of Archibald MacNab, Esq. of Penmore, Isle of Mull; these, as well as the ancient family tree of the Craignish Campbells, he has most kindly placed at our disposal. We have collated and compared these old documents with other authentic records to substantiate their facts and verify their dates, but the language of the writers we have left untouched. We are well aware that a few Gaelic scholars would, in some instances, have used other words, but we have adhered to the MSS. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Netherlorn: Argyllshire and Its Neighbourhood The district illustrated and described in the following pages is, like many other interesting by-ways in the Highlands, still comparatively unknown. Of its scenes and legends little has been written, and what has been is to be found in scattered fragments through a multitude of books. In the preparation of this volume, the information contained in the works hereafter mentioned has been freely made use of. The accounts given in Fordun's Chronicle (A.D. 1380), Dean Monro's Description of the Western Isles (1549), Martin's Description of the Western Islands (written about 1695), Pennant's Tour in Scotland (1772), and MacCulloch's Western Isles (circ. 1819), form a consecutive series of description and observation from the fourteenth century downwards. The earlier spelling of place-names was phonetic, and it is surprising how little, in many hundred years, the pronunciation of those Gaelic words has changed. Many islands mentioned in Monro's book, however, cannot now be identified; and even in MacCulloch's Description, written just ninety years ago, there are two islands, called by him Garveloch-na-skian and Garveloch-na-more, which are not now known by these names.
