Download or read book History of the Indian Navy 1613 1863 Volume I written by Charles Rathbone Low and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Rathbone Low, like so many servants of the East India Company, came from an Anglo-Irish ascendancy family, with estates in county Galway. His grandmother was a daughter of the 4th Viscount Boyne, his grandfather served in H.M. 76th Foot, his father was a Major in the Bengal Native Infantry, and he himself married the daugher of a General. Charles was born at Dublin on 30th October 1837. He entered the East India Company's Indian Navy in 1853 and saw active service againt pirates and slave traders in waters ranging from Zanzibar to the China Seas, only to have his career cut short in 1863 when the Indian Navy was abolished - hence the termina date of the present work. Returning to England, he was appointed the first Librarian (and Assistant Secretary) of the Royal United Services Institution in 1865, leaving the post in 1868 to concentrate on a career as a gentleman author and representative of the past glories of the Indian Navy. Beginning in 1866 and continuing until his death in 1918, he published a stream of monographs which included histories of the Royal Navy, the British Army, the First Afghan War, maritime discovery, and African exploration, and biographies of Field Marshal Pollock and Captain James Cook, while at the same time contributing hundreds of articles and shorter pieces to The Tmes and to literary and learned journals. The work which has lasted longest, indeed which still has no rivals, is his history of the Indian Navy, published in 1877 - coincidentally the year when the two post-1863 local non-combatant marine services based at Bombay and Calcutta were reorganised as H.M. Indian Marine, eventually the Royal Indian Navy. An in-depth history of this second phase of the Indian Navy's existence has yet to appear but at least we have the mass of information accumulated by original edition have now become both scarce and expensive, so the present reprint is most welcome. it also provides the opportunity to partly remedy the annoying lack of an index in the 1877 work. Low contented himself with detailed chapter summaries (which can still stand for a broad subject approach). The London Stamp Exchange added indexes of ships and officers, compiled by Captain Douglas Morris R.N. (Retd.), whose enthusiasm for the Indian Navy - and its medals - was largely responsible for the reissue of Low.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Conch Republic by Steve Godsey is a tale of turmoil, which began with World War II, and continued for centuries as the world evolved and expanded into deep space. Now it is not only humans, but aliens alike, who engage in this struggle to survive. This story takes place in deep space, but is being chronicled by a group secretly known as 'Time Walkers, ' ones who travel through time to any place or time in the galaxy, appearing human in form. They are rumored to have first appeared on Earth to stop an alien assassination plot to kill Adolf Hitler before his rise to power. While the timeline moves all the way to A.D. 3304 in deep space, so much action takes over the centuries, as the story recounts many historic events that played out here on Earth. However, now, a corrupt and greedy Shadow Government has taken over everything. Will the various human and alien empires come together to overthrow this evil, or will the battle rage on until only the strongest survive? About the Author Steve Godsey is a native of Ohio and currently resides in Cincinnati. His interests include travel and sightseeing, as well as reading historical books and watching DVDs. The author's purpose in writing this novel was to encourage present and future generations to take an interest in our planet and its problems before it is too late. It is also his hope that space exploration will continue so that we might know if we are in this galaxy alone, or are there others out there?

Download or read book Chronicles of Mars Volume I written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the Barsoom series. It inspired a number of well-known 20th century science fiction writers, including Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, and was also inspirational for many scientists in the fields of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life, including Carl Sagan. The first book in the trilogy is A Princess of Mars, a science fantasy novel full of swordplay and daring feats. It is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is also the beginning of the planetary romance, a sub-genre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the following decades. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. The second book is The Gods of Mars, a 1918 science fiction novel. It is most closely related to the planetary romance genre, similar to sword and sorcery, but including scientific aspects. Planetary romances mostly take place on the surface of an alien world (Mars, in this case), frequently include sword fighting, monsters, supernatural elements such as telepathic abilities, and civilizations similar to Earth in pre-technological eras, particularly with the inclusion of kingdoms, empires or religious societies. The third book is The Warlord of Mars a science fiction novel. Burroughs's vision of Mars was loosely inspired by astronomical speculation of the time, when Mars was seen as a formerly Earthlike world which was becoming less hospitable to life due to its advanced age, and its newly observed canals. In the novels, scarce water is distributed through these canals. In this world, the main character, John Carter, discovers fantastic creatures and ancient mysterious Martian races. The action crosses the planet from one civilization hidden in the southern polar ice-cap to another hidden in the northern polar ice-cap.
