Book Alte and Neue Pinakothek Munich

Download or read book Alte and Neue Pinakothek Munich written by Bernhard Maaz and published by Scala. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alte and Neue Pinakothek in Munich rank among the great galleries of the world. Their comprehensive collections trace in detail the development of art from the Middle Ages through the periods of the Renaissance, Baroque, Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism up to the birth of Modernism. The Neoclassical design of the Alte Pinakothek by Leo von Klenze (1836) had a seminal influence on museum architecture in Europe and provides the setting for the Old Masters. After the second museum building (completed in 1853) was destroyed during the Second World War, the architect Alexander von Branca created today’s Neue Pinakothek (1981). Its formal expression, in the idiom of a medieval fortress, and impressive exhibition galleries have made it a classic of Postmodernism. In this book, the author offers a refreshingly personal perspective on an eclectic selection of memorable works from across the collections.

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Jacobus Vrel written by Quentin Buvelot and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the art of a mysterious Dutch painter who left no written records behind. His paintings are curious, his figures introverted, and his street scenes strangely stage-like. Jacobus Vrel recorded everyday life in Holland during the seventeenth century and conjured his own idiosyncratic world at the same time. This volume presents the fascinating complete oeuvre of a painter whose works were thought in the nineteenth century to have been painted by Vermeer. Jacobus Vrel is like a phantom. No written sources describing the artist or his work have ever been discovered. His existence is documented only by some fifty surviving works which can hardly be compared with those of his contemporaries. His works, in their austerity and sometimes oppressive silence, seem unexpectedly modern, and have been compared to the paintings of Vilhelm Hammershøi. With detective-like investigative flair, and drawing on extensive technical examinations of the paintings, this book explores the mysterious pictures of this recently rediscovered painter.

Book Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape

Download or read book Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape written by Christopher S. Wood and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early sixteenth century, Albrecht Altdorfer promoted landscape from its traditional role as background to its new place as the focal point of a picture. His paintings, drawings, and etchings appeared almost without warning and mysteriously disappeared from view just as suddenly. In Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape, Christopher S. Wood shows how Altdorfer transformed what had been the mere setting for sacred and historical figures into a principal venue for stylish draftsmanship and idiosyncratic painterly effects. At the same time, his landscapes offered a densely textured interpretation of that quintessentially German locus—the forest interior. This revised and expanded second edition contains a new introduction, revised bibliography, and fifteen additional illustrations.

Book Artists and Society in Germany 1850 1914

Download or read book Artists and Society in Germany 1850 1914 written by Robin Lenman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times past, everyday business might mean making a trip to the pawnbroker, giving a loan to a trusted friend of selling off a coat, all to make ends meet. Both women and men engaged in this daily budgeting, but women's roles were especially important in achieving some level of comfort and avoiding penury. In some communities, the daily practices in place in the seventeenth century persisted into the twentieth, whilst other groups adopted new ways, such as using numbers to chart domestic affairs and turning to the savings banks that appeared in the nineteenth century. These strategies promised respectability and greater access to new consumer goods: better clothes and finer furnishings accompanied a newly disciplined behaviour. Therefore, in the material world of the past and in the changing habits of earlier generations lie crucial turning points. This book explores these previously under-researched patterns and practices that gave shape to modern consumer society.

Book excerpt: The Art of Looking Up surveys spectacular ceilings around the globe that have been graced by the brushes of great artists including Michelangelo, Marc Chagall and Cy Twombly. From the floating women and lotus flowers of the Senso-ji Temple in Japan, to the religious iconography that adorns places of worship from Vienna to Istanbul, all the way to bold displays like the Chihuly glass flora suspended from the lobby of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas: this book takes you on a tour of the extraordinary artworks that demand an alternative viewpoint. History of art expert Catherine McCormack guides you through the stories behind the artworks – their conception, execution, and the artists that visualised them. In many cases, these artworks also make bold but controlled political, religious or cultural statements, revealing much about the society and times in which they were created. Divided by these social themes into four sections – Religion, Culture, Power and Politics – and pictured from various viewpoints in glorious colour photography, tour the astounding ceilings of these and more remarkable locations: Vatican Palace, Rome, Italy Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, UK Louvre Museum, Paris, France Dali Theatre-Museum, Figueres, Catalonia Museum of the Revolution, Havana, Cuba Capitol Building, Washington, DC, USA Four eight-page foldout sections showcase some of the world's most spectacular ceilings in exquisite detail. First and foremost, this is a visual feast, but also a desirable art book that challenges you to seek out fine art in more unusual places and question the statements they may be making.
