Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim's Scrip: Or Wit and Wisdom of George Meredith; With Selections From His Poetry, and an Introduction A few years ago a copy of one of Meredith's novels was a rarity in this country; but now there are two complete new editions of his works; and, despite Mr. Meredith's own modest plea, "that the best of me is in my books," there are a large number of his admirers and friends who crave a less distant and more personal acquaintance with him. To meet this wish, and making use of all the material we could find, we have prepared this bare and inadequate sketch, humbly hoping that we shall not infringe upon the mans rightfully guarded personality. George Meredith was born in Hampshire, in the year 1828. His parents died when he was quite young, and left him to be educated as a ward in Chancery. Of these parents little has been told the general public; but it is said that the blood of working ancestors flows in Meredith's veins, and perhaps this accounts for the sympathetic insight with which many of his homely characters are drawn. He received his early education in Germany, where he remained until fifteen years old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Victorians read novels? Nicholas Dames answers that deceptively simple question by revealing a now-forgotten range of nineteenth-century theories of the novel, a range based in a study of human physiology during the act of reading, He demonstrates the ways in which the Victorians thought they read, and uncovers surprising responses to the question of what might have transpired in the minds and bodies of readers of Victorian fiction. His detailed studies of novelcritics who were also interested in neurological science, combined with readings of novels by Thackeray, Eliot, Meredith, and Gissing, propose a vision of the Victorian novel-reader as far from the quietly immersed being we now imagine - as instead a reader whose nervous system was addressed, attacked, andsoothed by authors newly aware of the neural operations of their public. Rich in unexpected intersections, from the British response to Wagnerian opera to the birth of speed-reading in the late nineteenth century, The Physiology of the Novel challenges our assumptions about what novel-reading once did, and still does, to the individual reader, and provides new answers to the question of how novels influenced a culture's way of reading, responding, and feeling.

Book The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel

Download or read book The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel written by Leah Price and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel, first published in 2000, brings together two traditionally antagonistic fields, book history and narrative theory, to challenge established theories of 'the rise of the novel'. Leah Price shows that far from leveling class or gender distinctions, as has long been claimed, the novel has consistently located them within its own audience. Shedding new light on Richardson and Radcliffe, Scott and George Eliot, this book asks why the epistolary novel disappeared, how the book review emerged, why eighteenth-century abridgers designed their books for women while Victorian publishers marketed them to men, and how editors' reproduction of old texts has shaped authors' production of new ones. This innovative study will change the way we think not just about the history of reading, but about the genealogy of the canon wars, the future of intellectual property, and the role that anthologies play in our own classrooms.

Book Meredith and the Novel

Download or read book Meredith and the Novel written by Neil Roberts and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-05-13 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meredith is a novelist whom many readers have discovered with excitement, drawn to his radical portrayal of social and personal relations, especially of gender. Neil Robert's book is the first full-length study for ten years, and is the first to examine the novels in the light of modern literary theory, especially the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, showing that Meredith is a writer who engages profoundly with the ideological discourses of his time and is a still not fully discovered precursor of the modernist novel.
