Book excerpt: The Picture of Dorian Gray is an 1891 philosophical novel by Irish writer and playwright Oscar Wilde. First published as a serial story in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, the editors feared the story was indecent, and without Wilde's knowledge, deleted five hundred words before publication. Despite that censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding the public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press. Wilde revised and expanded the magazine edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) for publication as a novel; the book edition (1891) featured an aphoristic preface - an apologia about the art of the novel and the reader. The content, style, and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own literary right, as social and cultural criticism. In April 1891, the editorial house Ward, Lock and Company published the revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Classic Edition published by Virtual University Press contains the full text of Oscar Wilde's gothic masterpiece, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." It is part of a literary series designed for enjoyment by contemporary readers and for classroom use by English, literature, and writing students. The book includes a study guide, discussion topics, and links to interactive online quizzes, which students can use to assess their grasp of key concepts and events in the story. In this tale of gothic horror, Dorian Gray is a remarkably handsome young man who views a painting of himself and wishes that he could retain his youth and beauty, while the painting ages. His wish is granted, and he embarks on a life of pleasure-seeking and debauchery that has dire consequences."The Picture of Dorian Gray" is Oscar Wilde's only novel, and in some respects, it was a harbinger of his own descent into a life of self-indulgence. He once said that the three main characters of the story were reflections of himself: "Basil Hallward (the artist) is what I think I am: Lord Henry (the hedonist) is what the world thinks of me: Dorian is what I would like to be--in other ages, perhaps." The book's daring embrace of decadence and sexuality sparked a furor in Victorian-era England. Today, the work is regarded as a great classic, a suspenseful and thought-provoking masterpiece that is as disturbing as it is intriguing.

Here in one volume are his immensely popular novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray"; his last literary work, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol," a product of his own prison experience; and four complete plays: Lady Windermere's Fan, his first dramatic success, "An Ideal Husband," which pokes fun at conventional morality, "The Importance of Being Earnest," his finest comedy, and "Salome," a portrait of uncontrollable love originally written in French and faithfully translated by Richard Ellmann. Every selection appears in its entirety-a marvelous collection of outstanding works by the incomparable Oscar Wilde, who's been aptly called "a lord of language" by Max Beerbohm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in his distinctively dazzling manner, Oscar Wilde's story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is the author's most popular work. The tale of Dorian Gray's moral disintegration caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, but though Wilde was attacked for the novel's corrupting influence, he responded that there is, in fact, "a terrible moral in Dorian Gray." Just a few years later, the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde's homosexual liaisons, which resulted in his imprisonment. Of Dorian Gray's relationship to autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, "Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be--in other ages, perhaps.
