Book The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Robert Bentley Todd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man, Vol. 1 of 2 Or, to take an example from the science which is to form the subject of the following pages. The function of respiration in animals is a very complex process, respecting the nature of which many unsatisfactory hypotheses had been formed, owing to the obscurity in which many of the phenomena, immediately or remotely connected with it, were involved. Until the law of the diffusion of gases, and of the permeability of membranes by them, had been developed, and until it had been shewn that car bonio acid is held in solution in venous blood, no theory of respira tion could be framed adequate to explain all the phenomena. It is now proved, that, in this process, a true interchange of gases takes place through the coats of the pulmonary blood-vessels, the oxygen of the air abstracting and occupying the place of the carbonic acid of the blood. An admirable example is thus afforded of a most impor tant vital process taking place in obedience to a purely physical law. Living objects are those which properly belong to the science of Physiology. These are strongly contrasted with the inanimate bodies (which have never lived), to which other branches of natural science refer. 'at the same time, there are many points of resem blance between them; and as both owe their origin to the same Creative mandate, and are reducible (as will be seen by-and-by) to the same elementary constituents, so they are subject in a great degree to the same physical laws, and are to be investigated accord ing to the same principles of philosophical inquiry. We propose, in the first place, to compare living or organized bodies, with inanimate, mineral, or unorganized bodies, and to ex plain what is meant by the term Life. Secondly, to review briefly, and with reference to their leading distinctions, the phenomena of the vegetable and animal kingdoms. Thirdly, to point out the value of a knowledge of Physiology, especially that of Man, in relation to medicine, and to explain the best mode of pursuing it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man, Vol. 2 of 2 The work, Which is now brought to a conclusion, was commenced in the year 1843, having been designed as a text-book for the lectures on General Anatomy and Physiology, given in King's College, London. In its title, we adopted the term Physiological Anatomy; in preference to the older one of General, or the later one of Histological, as being more comprehensive than either, and as denoting precisely that kind of anatomy, a know ledge of Which is especially required for the investigation of those subjects Which ought to come under consideration in a Physiological course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2 Although a short time only has elapsed since -the publication of the fourth edition of this work, the labours of physiologists have been so nume rous, diversified, and important, as to demand material modifications and additions in the present edition. No little time and industry have been bestowed by the author to introduce these, and to digest the various mate rials contained in the ex professo treatises, as well as in the different periodi cals of this country and of Europe. Histology' and histogeny properly, perhaps, belong to works on anatomy; but these have been so much culti yated by recent physiologists, so extensively introduced' into physiological works, and have such an important bearing on the doctrine of the functions, that, although the author has not treated of them in extenso, he has endea voured to bestow upon them due attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of Man: Designed to Represent the Existing State of Physiological Science, as Applied to the Functions of the Human Body In the preface to the first part of this work, published a little more than a year ago, the author announced his intention of writing an extended treatise upon human physiology; and the present volume, devoted to subjects connected with the great functions of digestion and absorption, is now presented, as the second of the series. As stated in the preface to the first volume, the separate parts of the work are intended to form distinct treatises, devoted respectively to natural subdivisions of the science of physiology; each one being complete in itself, but the entire series embracing all the subjects usually regarded as belonging to human physiology. The manner in which the first part has been received, and the experience of the author in the preparation of the present volume, have encouraged him. in carrying out the original plan of the work. To give to every subdivision of physiology that careful reflection and critical study, which alone could enable one to form a calm and dispassionate judgment upon the difficult questions which are constantly arising, involves an amount of time and patient labor which might well discourage the most enthusiastic student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Man: Designed to Represent, the Existing State of Physiological Science, as Applied to the Functions of the Human Body In entering upon the labor incident to the preparation of a work purporting to treat comprehensively of the physiology of man, the author appreciated the magnitude of the undertaking; and the special study which it necessarily demanded has not diminished that diffidence with which a student of any of the natural sciences puts forward a book which he hopes may add somewhat to existing knowledge, or fairly represent what is known in any particular department. In assuming so grave a responsibility, the author should be actuated by a sense of peculiar fitness for his task, as well as a conviction that literature demands such a work as he proposes to write. Without assuming these good and sufficient reasons, the author of the present volume pleads an earnest desire to advance the science of physiology and facilitate its study; and he indulges the hope that he may be instrumental in making the student and practitioner of medicine better acquainted with what must be conceded to be the basis of true pathology, and interest, to some extent, the general reader in the all-important subject of human physiology.
