Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Its Inhabitants, Vol. 1: South America Nor have physical geographers failed to notice the resemblance in the contour lines of the two main sections of the New World itself, both of triangular form, with apex pointing southwards, and with orographic and hydrographic systems presenting many features in common. Here the chief contrasts between the northern and southern divisions are in fact, mainly due to the differences of latitude, compared with which the diversities of outline are of relatively slight importance. Such diversities, however, require to be carefully noted. South America, with far more clearly marked periphery, is sharply limited in the north-west by the fluvial valley of the Atrato, which is connected by a very low pass with the marshy gulf of San Juan. Thus the continent, taken as a whole, may be regarded as a vast insular region somewhat analogous to Australia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Creation, Vol. 2 of 2: Or the Development of the Earth and Its Inhabitants by the Action of Natural Causes This genealogical conception of the organic system doubt less belongs to futurity alone. But with it as our basis we may now turn our attention to one of the most essential, but also one of the most difficult, tasks of the non miraculous history of creation, namely, to the actual con struction of the Organic Pedigree. Let us see how far we are already able to point out all the different organic forms as the divergent descendants of a single or of some few common original forms. But how can we construct the actual pedigree of the animal and vegetable group of forms from our knowledge Of them, at present so scanty and fragmentary? The answer to this question lies in what we have already remarked of the parallelism of the three series of development - in the important causal relation which connects the palaeontological development of all organic tribes with the embryological development of indi viduals, and with the systematic development of groups. Download or read book The Evolution of the Earth and Its Inhabitants written by Joseph Barrell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Earth and Its Inhabitants: A Series of Lectures Delivered Before the Yale Chapter of the Sigma 11 During the Academic Year 1916-1917 The problem of the origin of the earth is within the domain of scientific investigation, but as yet the pictures which may be drawn are varied. The vague outlines shift and change but become clearer with the growth of knowledge. Where the solution of a problem is not yet definitive and certain, the method of multiple working hypotheses Should be used. All facts and theories should be matched to these several hypoth eses to determine which one of them shall be selected and modified, and which shall meet the fate of the unfit. At the present stage of investigation any one View should not be regarded as established beyond question, even though the assembled evidence seems strongly to support it. In a single presentation, however, all hypotheses cannot be equally treated and each investigator, while recognizing the existence of other hypotheses, may properly emphasize that one which seems to him most in accordance with the various categories of facts and more firmly established inferences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a digital reprint of the revised 1976 edition of this classic work. It examines seismology, gravity, the strength of the shell, the variation of latitude and the figure of the Moon. The chapter on tidal friction is largely rewritten and what now seem to be the three most reliable estimates of the true secular acceleration of the Moon agree in suggesting that the provisional estimate in the last edition should be considerably increased. The criticism of theories of continental drift, convection and plate tectonics is much expanded. A new appendix pinpoints directions for future geophysical research. The Earth continues to provide a fundamental and comprehensive account of geophysical problems, essential to all scientists concerned with problems of the origin, history and physical constitution of the Earth.

Book The History of Creation

Download or read book The History of Creation written by Ernst Haeckel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1899, The History of Creation was the first book of its kind to apply a doctrine to the whole range of organic morphology and make use of the effect Darwin had on biological sciences during the 19th century. Haeckel looks at Darwin’s reform of Descent Theory and its establishment through the doctrine of selection. He introduces Descent Theory into the systematic classification of animals and plants and finds a "natural system" on the basis of genealogy - that is, to construct hypothetical pedigrees for the various species of organisms. The book will be of interest to those studying natural history and the origins of modern scientific thought, it will appeal to researchers both in the natural sciences and in history.
