Book The Constants of Nature

Download or read book The Constants of Nature written by John Barrow and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reality as we know it is bound by a set of constants—numbers and values that dictate the strengths of forces like gravity, the speed of light, and the masses of elementary particles. In The Constants of Nature, Cambridge Professor and bestselling author John D.Barrow takes us on an exploration of these governing principles. Drawing on physicists such as Einstein and Planck, Barrow illustrates with stunning clarity our dependence on the steadfastness of these principles. But he also suggests that the basic forces may have been radically different during the universe’s infancy, and suggests that they may continue a deeply hidden evolution. Perhaps most tantalizingly, Barrow theorizes about the realities that might one day be found in a universe with different parameters than our own.

Book Metrology and Physical Constants

Download or read book Metrology and Physical Constants written by A. Di Giuseppe and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reliability and accuracy of systems of measurement continue to advance. We are about to enter a period of the most stable measurement system we can imagine with the anticipated new definitions of the SI units of measurement; a direct link between fundamental physics and metrology which will eliminate the current definition of the kilogram, until now based upon an artifact. This book presents selected papers from Course 185 of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics, held in Varenna, Italy, in July 2012 and jointly organized with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). The papers delivered at the school covered some of the most advanced topics in the discipline of metrology, including nano-technologies; quantum information and quantum devices; biology and medicine; food; surface quality; ionising radiation for health, environment, art and archaeology; and climate. The continuous and striking advances in basic research concerning atomic frequency standards operating both in the visible range and at microwave levels and the applications to satellite systems are also considered, in the framework of a historical review of the international organization of metrology, as are the problems inherent in uncertainty statements and definitions. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves scientific measurement at the highest levels of accuracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A standard reference that provides, in accessible form, selected critical data for professional and student solid Earth and planetary geophysicists. It represents the third version of the popular "Handbook of Physical Constants" (the first was published in 1942, the second in 1966). The present version reflects the enormous growth of scientific knowledge of the Earth and planets since 1966, spurred by the discovery and verification of plate tectonics and the systematic exploration of the solar system. Book Physical Constants of Linear Homopolymers

Download or read book Physical Constants of Linear Homopolymers written by Otis G. Lewis and published by Springer. This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of some fundamental properties of polymers, arranged alphabetically in one table. It should prove useful in practical applications of polymers and in the development of theories of polymer behavior. Much of the impetus for studies of new polymers derives from the desire to understand how molecular structure in fluences physical properties. A large quantity of data has been generated in pursuit of this goal, and certain consistent trends have been discovered. It is hoped that further progress in this area will be accelerated by bringing together the published data on polymers in this form. The physical properties listed were selected for the following reasons. Firstly, they are fundamental quantities from which other properties may be deduced. Secondly, they can be determined reproducibly in different laboratories, and finally, they have been reported for a sufficient number of polymers to justify inclusion. The table of polymers has been arranged so as to economize on space, to keep the size of the book within reasonable proportions, and to facilitate scanning. The device of inverting the names tends to group similar compounds to aid in searching. Because of the ease with which the table can be surveyed it was felt that supplementary indexes by melting point or glass temperature would be unnecessary. References are given to the literature cited, but unfortunately it is not possible to indicate the reference next to each datum without greatly expanding the size of the table.

Book The Fundamental Physical Constants and the Frontier of Measurement

Download or read book The Fundamental Physical Constants and the Frontier of Measurement written by Brian William Petley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental physical constants are used throughout the world by scientists and technologists in the course of every kind of theoretical and experimental research work. The book examines the present state of the measurement arts, and gives indications of likely future developments. This comprehensive and stimulating volume will certainly become a standard reference work in the field of measurement science for physicists, metrologists and workers in other physical science disciplines where a high accuracy of measurement is required.

Download or read book Physical Constants written by G.W. Childs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time changes most things, and physical constants are seem ingly not immune from this contingency. The publishers' suggestion for a new edition has provided an opportunity for a thorough scrutiny of the contents of this book and for the adjustment to some fourteen years of changes since the last edition. At the same time the contents have been increased by the addition of one or two new tables, and current moves towards the adoption of an international system of units ex plain the appearance in the book, wherever it is practicable, of S. 1. units. However, the habits of a lifetime are not easily changed, and it is too much to expect that despite careful proofreading the change of units has been carried through without errors. I shall be grateful for intimation of such mis takes. I wish moreover to thank all those who in the past have taken the trouble to draw my attention to errors, or to superior determinations, or simply to offer advice or criticism. For those who do not find what they seek in this collection, more complete compilations of physical constants are to be found in: Tables of Physical and Chemical Constants, G. W. C. Kaye and T. H. Book Fundamental Constants The A Mystery Of Physics

Download or read book Fundamental Constants The A Mystery Of Physics written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The speed of light, the fine structure constant, and Newton's constant of gravity — these are just three among the many physical constants that define our picture of the world. Where do they come from? Are they constant in time and across space? In this book, physicist and author Harald Fritzsch invites the reader to explore the mystery of the fundamental constants of physics in the company of Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and a modern-day physicist. The conversation that the three scientists are imagined to have provides an entertaining introduction to the constants and covers topics ranging from atomic, nuclear, and particle physics to astrophysics and cosmology.

Book Fluid Injection in Deformable Geological Formations

Download or read book Fluid Injection in Deformable Geological Formations written by Benjamin Loret and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an introduction to the geomechanical issues raised by both the extraction of actual and potential energy resources, and by the treatment of the ensuing environmental concerns. Discussions of the operations of injection of fluids into, and withdrawal from, geological formations link the chapters, each devoted to a particular technical aspect or scientific issue, or to a particular energy resource. Subjects are ordered according to their industrial applications, including enhanced oil and gas recovery, gas hydrates, enhanced geothermal systems, hydraulic fracturing, and carbon dioxide sequestration. An overview of the industrial, research and simulation aspects for each subject is provided. Fluid Injection in Deformable Geological Formations will be of interest to academic and industrial researchers in a wide variety of fields, including computational mechanics, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering and geomechanics, engineering seismology, petroleum engineering, reservoir engineering, and engineering geology.
