Book The Photograph and the Album

Download or read book The Photograph and the Album written by Jonathan Carson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in our series of books exploring key aspects of both contemporary and historic photography. With 480 pages and more than 100 colour illustrations The Photograph and The Album: Histories, Practices, Futures is a perceptive and stimulating guide to understanding that most pervasive photographic format, the photo album. Becoming "increasingly unruly," it has survived for over 150 years, from the first experimental albums of the 1850s to today's interactive, mobile applications. Through the placing of single images in sequence, the photo album is the narrative format par excellence. And, as this book demonstrates, its narratives embrace the social, the historical, the sexual and the political. With contributions from twenty respected international authors - academics, curators, photographers, collectors, researchers and writers - The Photograph and The Album examines the topic in both visual and written form, spanning historic practice, present-day creation, and future trends. "A welcome addition to the growing trend in seriously exploring the cultural context of the album form." Angela Kelly, Associate Professor, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York.

Download or read book The Stanford Album written by Margo Baumgartner Davis and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stanford Album brings together some 600 photographs, largely unpublished, and an interpretive text to tell the story of the community life of Stanford University from the University's creation in 1885 through the Second World War. It is a fitting coincident that at the same time Stanford is celebrating its Centennial Years (1985-91), the art of photography has reached its own anniversary of 150 years since the birth of the daguerreotype. The founders of the university, Jane and Leland Stanford, sat for their wedding portraits in 1850, and these daguerreotypes were just the beginning of the Stanfords' fascination with patronage of the new art form. Leland Stanford's perception of the value of the camera as a medium of documentation resulted in a superb pictorial record of the planning, construction, and dedication of the university, some of which is reproduced in The Stanford Album. By the turn of the century, technical advances in photography made possible the small, handheld camera, and at Stanford the "snapshot" image of campus life began to proliferate. Commercial photographers mainly concentrated on athletic events, drama productions, student parades, and other campus rituals; students who owned cameras intruded everywhere with the mysterious little boxes--into dormitories, fraternities and sororities, classrooms, dances, picnics, and beer busts. The book revisits a bygone Stanford. Through the magic of the cmeara lens, a vanished world of college life comes alive again, and we can see the community that existed yesterday under the same arcades where those at Stanford today study, work, and stroll.

Book Photographic Memory

Download or read book Photographic Memory written by Verna Posever Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As photography became an increasingly accessible medium in the twentieth century, the popularity of the photographic album exploded, yielding a wonderful range of objects made for varying purposesto memorialize, document (officially or unofficially), promote, or educate, and sometimes simply to channel creative energy. Photographic Memory: The Album in the Age of Photography traces the rise of the album from the turn of the century to the present day, showcasing some of the most important examples in the history of the medium, as collected by the Library of Congress. The albums that comprise Photographic Memory provide an immensely personal and idiosyncratic historical perspective through the many lenses of these unique objects. From an Alaskan expedition album of Edward Sheriff Curtiss early work, to Walker Evanss extended suite of images in study for Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, to a family album by Danny Lyon, this beautifully produced book provides an in-depth look at the history of photography through the handmade objects of some its most famous practitioners, much of which is previously unpublished. The book includes works by photographers and filmmakers such as F. Holland Day, Jim Goldberg, Dorothea Lange, Duane Michals, Leni Riefenstahl, and W. Eugene Smith alongside lesser-known, yet significant albums on subjects as varied as African American vaudeville, the 1915 Jerusalem locust plague, and the folkways of Spain. Each album, beautifully reproduced over numerous spreads, is accompanied by a detailed explanatory text. An insightful history of the album format is included, as well as an informative essay about caring for and restoring albums. At a time when the physical collection of photographs is becoming largely immaterial through digital means, Photographic Memory is a comprehensive illustrated history of a form of presentation that became an art form in itselfa history that has seen radical shifts in the role of handmade artists objects.

Book Hardtack Coffee Or The Unwritten Story Of Army Life Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Hardtack Coffee Or The Unwritten Story Of Army Life Illustrated Edition written by John D. Billings and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains over 200 illustrations by Medal of Honor recipient Charles W. Reed “Most histories of the Civil War focus on battles and top brass. Hardtack and Coffee is one of the few to give a vivid, detailed picture of what ordinary soldiers endured every day—in camp, on the march, at the edge of a booming, smoking hell. John D. Billings of Massachusetts enlisted in the Army of the Potomac and survived the conditions he recorded. The authenticity of his book is heightened by the many drawings that a comrade, Charles W. Reed, made in the field. This is the story of how the Civil War soldier was recruited, provisioned, and disciplined. Described here are the types of men found in any outfit; their not very uniform uniforms; crowded tents and makeshift shelters; difficulties in keeping clean, warm, and dry; their pleasure in a cup of coffee; food rations, dominated by salt pork and the versatile cracker or hardtack; their brave pastimes in the face of death; punishments for various offenses; treatment in sick bay; firearms and signals and modes of transportation. Comprehensive and anecdotal, Hardtack and Coffee is striking for the pulse of life that runs through it.”-Print ed.

Book An Afternoon in Astoria

Download or read book An Afternoon in Astoria written by Rudolph Burckhardt and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1940, Rudy Burckhardt spent an afternoon in Astoria, Queens, photographing the streets of the neighborhood, its gas stations, cars, children at play and other everyday scenes. Burckhardt later mounted a group of the photographs in a spiral-bound album, and wrote on the cover, in neatly printed letters, "An Afternoon in Astoria." This handmade book, unpublished until now, composes a tour of this part of New York, its empty lots and abandoned cars made poetic by Burckhardt's eye. The Museum of Modern Art recently published An Afternoon in Astoria and has also produced a limited-edition, boxed, spiral-bound facsimile of the original handmade album. An immaculately produced clothbound box with tipped-in reproductions from the book inside-and-out contains the album facsimile and a separately bound essay by Sarah Hermanson Meister, Associate Curator in the photography department of the Museum, discussing Burckhardt and specifically the groups of photographs he bound into albums for the pleasure of himself and his friends.

Book Johnny Depp Photo Album

Download or read book Johnny Depp Photo Album written by Christopher Heard and published by Plexus Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Johnny Depp Photo Album follows the unstoppable rise of its subject: through all the movies and the drunken bad-boy behaviour, the romantic affairs with actress Winona Ryder and supermodel Kate Moss, to his current peak in films like the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the box-office smash Alice in Wonderland. Featuring a wealth of film stills and candid shots away from the set, it also shows the other side of the screen icon: rejecting his former life of high-profile hellraising, Depp has chosen to live away from the madness of Hollywood and devote himself to his family. As this book sweetly illustrates, Johnny Depp has found the meaning of life itself in his relationships with his photogenic partner, French singing star Vanessa Paradis, and their children, who he aggressively shields from the media spotlight. This eyecatchingly designed tribute introduces us to the family man who also happens to be the greatest screen star on the planet.
