Download or read book Photodisintegration of the Deuteron with Polarized Photons from LEGS written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment is described which will measure the d(.gamma., p) reaction with polarized photon beams from LEGS ranging in energy from 50 MeV to 530 MeV. The data will yield a new high-resolution high-statistics determination of the total unpolarized cross section, will isolate for the first time the polarization dependent part of the reaction, and will measure the photon-beam asymmetry with much higher resolution and accuracy than available from existing data. These will provide one of the most stringent tests for models of the nuclear force. In addition, high-resolution data will be taken with both linear and circularly-polarized .gamma. rays to search for the effects of bibaryons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50 years ago, in 1934, Chadwick and Goldhaber (ChG 34) published a paper entitled "A 'Nuclear Photo-effect': Disintegration of the Diplon by -y-Rays."l in the introduction: They noted "By analogy with the excitation and ionisation of atoms by light, one might expect that any complex nucleus should be excited or 'ionised', that is, disintegrated, by -y-rays of suitable energy", and furthermore: "Heavy hydrogen was chosen as the element first to be examined, because the diplon has a small mass defect and also because it is the simplest of all nuclear systems and its properties are as important in nuclear theory as the hydrogen is in atomic theory". Almost at the same time, in 1935, the first theoretical paper on the photodisinte gration of the deuteron entitled "Quantum theory of the diplon" by Bethe and Peierls (BeP 35) appeared. It is not without significance that these two papers mark the be ginning of photonuclear physics in general and emphasize in particular the special role the two-body system has played in nuclear physics since then and still plays. A steady flow of experimental and theoretical papers on deuteron photo disintegration and its inverse reaction, n-p capture, shows the continuing interest in this fundamental process (see fig. 1.1).

Download or read book The Photodisintegration of the Deuteron by Polarized Photons written by F. F. Liu and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asymmetry in the photodisintegration of the deuteron by polarized photons has been measured between photon energies of 75 and 230 MeV. Measurements are made mostly at 90 degrees in the center of mass system, but limited data at 45 degrees and 135 degrees are also obtained. The data below 140 MeV are compared with current theories. At 90 degrees our results are generally smaller than theoretical calculations. The measured asymmetry changes sign at about 130 MeV and shows a backward peaking at the high energy points. (Author).

Book Complete Atlas of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Photodisintegration Below Pion Threshold

Download or read book Complete Atlas of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Photodisintegration Below Pion Threshold written by K.-M. Schmitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a complete calculation of all 288 polarization observables of deuteron photodisintegration for polarized photons and an oriented deuteron target is presented for energies below +-production threshold. The observables are calculated within a nonrelativistic framework but with inclusion of lowest-order relativistic effects. Explicit meson exchange currents and isobar configurations as manifestation of subnuclear degrees of freedom are included in the calculation. The sensitivity of the various polarization observables with respect to subnuclear degrees of freedom, to electric and magnetic multipole contributions and to a variety of realistic potential models are systematically investigated. Thus this atlas provides the most detailed and systematic survey on polarization observables of this important process. It allows to analyse the different dynamical properties of the np-system as contained in the various observables and, therefore, will be useful for both theoretical studies and for the planning and evaluation of experiments as well. It serves in addition as an important supplement to the recent general review on deuteron photodisintegration by A. Arenhövel and M. Sanzone (Few-Body Systems, Suppl. 3).

Book Recoil Proton Polarization in High Energy Deuteron Photodisintegration with Circularly Polarized Photons

Download or read book Recoil Proton Polarization in High Energy Deuteron Photodisintegration with Circularly Polarized Photons written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We measured the angular dependence of the three recoil-proton polarization components in two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at a photon energy of 2 GeV. These new data provide a benchmark for calculations based on quantum chromodynamics. Two of the five existing models have made predictions of polarization observables. Both explain the longitudinal polarization transfer satisfactorily. Transverse polarizations are not well described, but suggest isovector dominance.

Book Precision Measurements of Deuteron Photodisintegration Using Linearly Polarized Photons of 14 and 16 MeV

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precision measurement of the d(gamma, n)p reaction was performed at the High Intensity gamma-ray Source (HIGS), which is located at the Duke Free Electron Laser Laboratory on the campus of Duke University. The gamma-ray beams were nearly 100% linearly polarized, allowing the angular distributions of both the analyzing power and unpolarized cross section to be measured at 14 and 16 MeV. The photons were incident on a heavy water target and the neutrons from the photodisintegration reaction were detected using the Blowfish detector array, which consists of 88 liquid scintillator detectors with large angular coverage. A transition matrix element (TME) analysis was performed on the data which allowed the amplitudes of the TMEs which contribute to the reaction at these energies to be extracted. This was done by invoking Watson's theorem, which fixes the relative TME phases using the n-p scattering phase shifts, leaving the TME amplitudes as free parameters in fits to the data. The results indicated very good agreement with a recent potential model calculation for the amplitudes of the three electric dipole (E1) p-waves, which account for over 90% of the cross section at these energies. The extracted TME amplitudes were then used to construct the observable which enters into the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) Sum Rule integrand. The results are the first experimental indication of a positive value of the GDH integrand in the region near photodisintegration threshold. A positive value at these energies has been shown by theory to be due to relativistic contributions.

Book Polarization Measurements in High Energy Deuteron Photodisintegration

Download or read book Polarization Measurements in High Energy Deuteron Photodisintegration written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the d(polarized y, polarized p)n reaction at thetac.m. = 90 degrees for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. The induced polarization py vanishes above 1 GeV, contrary to meson-baryon model expectations, in which resonances lead to large polarizations. However, the polarization transfer Cx does not vanish above 1 GeV, inconsistent with hadron helicity conservation. Thus, we show that the scaling behavior observed in the d(y, p)n cross sections is not a result of perturbative QCD. These data should provide important tests of new nonperturbative calculations in the intermediate energy regime.

Book Polarization in Photodisintegration of the Deuteron

Download or read book Polarization in Photodisintegration of the Deuteron written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recoil proton polarization was measured in deuteron photodisintegration at theta{sub cm} = 90{sup o} for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. The induced polarization py is consistent with vanishing above 1 GeV, in surprising disagreement with meson-baryon calculations. From pQCD it is generally expected that hadron helicity is conserved, but, the polarization transfer observables do not vanish. As the data are inconsistent with existing meson baryon model predictions, and with expectations from pQCD, we suggest that nonperturbative quark models will be needed to understand the underlying reaction dynamics.

Book Measurement of the Helicity Dependence of Deuteron Photodisintegration for Photon Energies Below 450 MeV

Download or read book Measurement of the Helicity Dependence of Deuteron Photodisintegration for Photon Energies Below 450 MeV written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998 a pilot experiment was carried out to study the helicity dependence of photoreaction cross sections using circularly polarized real photons on longitudinally polarized deuterons in a deuterated butanol target. The knowledge of these cross sections is required to test the validity of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule on the deuteron and the neutron. The focus of this thesis is on the results for the differential and total cross sections for the photodisintegration reaction for various photon energies in the range from 200 to 450 MeV using data taken with the detector system DAPHNE. The current understanding of the NN interaction as represented by the calculations by M. Schwamb could be confirmed within the given uncertainties. In addition, the detector DAPHNE has been prepared for the main experiment in 2003. The according work is presented together with results of the quality-test measurements of the renewed detector components.
