Book Talk Nigeria

Download or read book Talk Nigeria written by King Kayode Yeotan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talk Nigeria was created to help those that often travel to and from Nigeria and would like a more efficient way of communicating with the majority of Nigerians. This handbook will enable foreign-born Nigerians and their families to teach their native language to their children. Talk Nigeria makes it possible for them to not only learn the languages, but also to assist them with phonetic pronunciation of the words in their native languages. This is not just another boring language guide that is only based upon endless repetitions of language drills. It is a handbook that promotes quick and effective communication with Nigerians in the three major languages. It includes • easy-to-read translations from English into the three main languages spoken in Nigeria—Yoruba, Ibo, and Hausa, • all translations include the phonetic pronunciation for each word and phrase; • translations for greetings, everyday phrases, and a reference dictionary. An innovative way to learn to speak a very common African language, this handbook is an indispensable guide to speaking the Nigerian languages correctly and effectively.

Book Studies in Nigerian Linguistics

Download or read book Studies in Nigerian Linguistics written by Ndimele, Ozo-mekuri and published by M & J Grand Orbit Communications. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Nigerian Linguistics is a compilation of research papers on topical issues in Nigerian languages and linguistics covering three main areas of research, viz.: Language and Society, Applied Linguistics and Formal Linguistics. The papers in this volume are sectioned as such, even though there are bits of overlapping, especially for some of the papers contained in the first and second sections. The first fifteen (15) papers focus on the major theme of Language and Society in Nigeria. Many of the papers in this section address some peculiar sociolinguistic issues that affect the nation, including the nagging and lingering problem regarding the “language question” for the Nigerian nation even after five decades of the attainment of “Political Independence”, language and national development and language varieties. Section 2 contains papers in Applied Linguistics in its narrow and extended senses. There are papers on language teaching and learning, interference and intraference phenomena, language engineering (with focus on codification), communication disorders, and much more. The third section contains sixteen (16) papers in the core areas of linguistics, including phonology, morphology and syntax of Nigerian languages. Some of the papers address aspects of the phonological and morphosyntactic processes of deletion, affixation, cliticisation, causativisation, complementation, serialisation, agreement, and much more. The phrasal structure and pronominal systems of some languages were also discussed.

Book Nigerian English

Download or read book Nigerian English written by David Jowitt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the past few decades have witnessed growing interest in varieties of English around the world, no study of the Nigerian variety intended for the international market has yet been published. Making use of well-known paradigms, the book will relate Nigerian English, as a ‘Second Language’ variety, to other World Englishes. Its chief overall concern, however, is to provide a detailed descriptive account of the variety, seeking to show what is distinctive about it and also, in this perspective, distinguishing between more educated and less educated usage. After giving a sociolinguistic profile of Nigeria, where English today enjoys a more prominent role than ever before, it will examine in turn the phonology, morpho-syntax, and lexico-semantics of Nigerian English, with samples of written texts from the eighteenth century to the present. It will also give a comprehensive summary of academic research carried out in the field over the past fifty years. In this way the book will provide an introduction to the subject for the benefit of scholars and students in universities in many countries, and will serve as a useful companion to other books in De Gruyter Mouton's Dialects of English series.

Book Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English

Download or read book Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English written by Iyabode Omolara Daniel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English attempts to provide a practical guide to the learner in all ramifications of theoretical and practical uses of the phonetics and phonology of the English language. Useful suggestions and tips are also given on how to overcome the terror of the sounds of English. An attempt is also made to give detailed information on the workings of the prosodic features of English. This is especially necessary, as they remain, largely, the most confounding aspect of the English language to the average Nigerian speaker of English. The distinctive phonological features of the English sounds are also painstakingly discussed to help make the identification and description of the sounds of English even more interesting and accessible. The discussion about the phonological tendencies of the sounds of the English language is meant to help the reader see the English sounds as functional entities that go beyond the theoretical descriptions of their articulatory processes in the classroom. This book thus serves as a useful introductory text. If the success of the first edition is anything to go by, it is obvious that many students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels have found the book a helpful guide into understanding and mastering the phonetics and phonology of English. Moreover, certificate class students at secondary school level have also found the many segmental and suprasegmental examples very practical and helpful to their mastery of English phonetics.

Book The Numeral Systems of Nigerian Languages

Download or read book The Numeral Systems of Nigerian Languages written by Ndimele, Ozo-mekuri and published by M & J Grand Orbit Communications. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this collection present the numeral systems of more than twenty Nigerian languages. The papers mainly emanate from a workshop on the numeral systems of Nigerian languages organised by the Linguistic Association of Nigeria during its 23rd Annual Conference which was held at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The workshop arose from awareness created by Dr. Eugene S.L. Chan on the need for Nigerian linguists to document this severely endangered but very important aspect of natural languages. The quantum of mathematical computations - addition, multiplication, subtraction, or a combination of two or all of these - involved in the numeral systems of Nigerian languages is remarkable. The papers reveal that a variety of numeral systems do exist, such as: binary, decimal, incomplete decimal, duodecimal, quinary, quaternary, ternary, mixed, body-part tally systems, and much more. The book is a resource about how different languages manipulate their numeral systems.

This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume, which is the 5th in the Nigerian Linguists Festschrift Series, is devoted to Professor Munzali A. Jibril, a celebrated icon in university administration, and an erudite Professor of English Linguistics. The title of this special edition was specifically chosen to crown Professor Jibril’s academic prowess in both English and indigenous Nigerian languages, and to mark and laud his official departure from active university lectureship. 72 assessed papers are included from the many submitted. Papers cover the main theme of the volume, i.e. the interaction between English and indigenous Nigerian languages, and there are a number of papers on other secular areas of linguistics such as: language and history, language planning and policy, language documentation, language engineering, lexicography, translation, gender studies, language acquisition, language teaching and learning, pragmatics, discourse and conversational analysis, and literature in English and African languages. Book Language Endangerment

Download or read book Language Endangerment written by Ndimele, Ozo-mekuri and published by M & J Grand Orbit Communications. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commemorative volume is the 12th edition in the Nigerian Linguists Festschrift Series devoted to Professor (Mrs.) Appolonia Uzoaku Okwudishu. The majority of the papers were presented at the 27th Annual Conference of the Linguistic Association of Nigerian (CLAN) which was held at the Benue State University, Makurdi, Nigeria, and the 26th CLAN which was held at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The title derives from the theme of the 27th CLAN: Language Endangerment: Globalisation and the Fate of Minority Languages in Nigeria. A large number of the papers address the major theme of the conference, while the balance address various aspects of Nigerian linguistics, languages, communication, and literature. Fifty-one papers are included, ranging from sociolinguistics through applied linguistics to formal areas of linguistics which include phonology, morphology and syntax of Nigerian languages. Papers on language endangerment and language revitalisation strategies for safeguarding the vanishing indigenous tongues of Nigeria are the major focus, and the book serves as important reference material in various aspects of language and linguistic studies in Nigeria.

Book Nigerian Languages Literatures Culture and Reforms

Download or read book Nigerian Languages Literatures Culture and Reforms written by Ndimele, Ozo-mekuri and published by M & J Grand Orbit Communications. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were selected from the Silver Jubilee edition of the Annual Conference of the Linguistic Association of Nigerian (LAN) which was held at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Abuja, Nigeria. The Silver Jubilee edition is dedicated to the father of Nigerian Linguistics, Professor Emeritus Ayo Bamgbose. Professor Emeritus Bamgbose was the first indigenous Professor of Linguistics in Nigeria, and the first black African to teach linguistics in any known university south of the Sahara. He was there from the very beginning, and together with co-operation of people such as the late Professor Kay Williamson, he nurtured Nigerian linguistics. He is not just a foremost Nigerian linguist, but also a most famous, respected, celebrated, distinguished, and cherished African linguist of all times. To be candid, Nigerian linguistics is synonymous with Professor Emeritus Bamgbose. In 58 well-written chapters by experts in their fields, the book covers aspects of Nigerian languages, linguistics, literatures and culture. The papers have not been categorized into sections; rather they flow, hence there is some overlapping in the arrangement. The book is an essential resource for all who are interested to learn about current trends in the study of languages, linguistics and related subject-matters in Nigeria.
