Book William James

Download or read book William James written by Emile Boutroux and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents the philosophy of William James. In certain men, the personality and the work are inseparable, and James was one. He taught that a philosophy has its root in life, not in the collective or impersonal life of humanity, in his view the abstraction of the schools, but in the concrete life of the individual, the only life which really exists. James thought that philosophy, even in its boldest speculations, should maintain its bond with the soul of the thinker if it is not to degenerate into an empty assemblage of words and of concepts, devoid of all real content. After presenting an account of the life and personality of James, the author presents James's philosophy in 5 fields: psychology, religious psychology, pragmatism, metaphysical views, and pedagogy"--Introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of William James's Philosophy: A Critical Essay for the General Reader Although in writing this essay I have had in View that large and fortunately increasing number of readers who feel a sincere interest in philosophy, and for whom James himself must always remain its leading exponent, still I have aimed at neither an introduction nor an exposition, except in so far as these are necessary to criticism; some degree of acquaintance, therefore, with James's own works is required, but that I believe is not far to seek. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William James and Pragmatism: Thesis The 'belief that the changes which have been incident to the devel opment of this philosophy are of utmost significance to the student Of present philosophical tendencies led me to undertake an analysis of What we may call the Old and the new pragmatism, or the pragmatism Of James and that of the school most closely associated with the name Of Professor John Dewey. The present monograph is a part only Of a study which I am making of the entire complex relationship of, the two closely allied philosophies, and yet it is complete in itself, for in discussing the difficulties inherent in J ames's formulation Of his final doctrine of consciousness, one comes upon the essential difference between the Old pragmatism and the new; a difference from which the other divergences - such as the one included in this monograph in regard to the doctrine of truth - follow as by corollary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present Philosophical Tendencies a Critical Survey of Naturalism, Idealism Pragmatism and Realism, Together With a Synopsis of the Philosophy of William James, 1921 To avoid any misunderstanding as to the scope of the present book, let me say at the outset that with the cxcep tion of the Appendix, it is a critique, rather than a history. I have attempted not merely to summarize, but to esti mate, present philosophical tendencies; and my criticism is throughout based on the realistic philosophy which I set forth constructively only at the end. Since my method has been critical rather than exposi tory I shall doubtless be charged with having committed the error personae, with having attributed to certain writers views which they would not recognize as their own. Be this as it may, I have in any case formulated the views which I have criticised, so that the merits of the question may always be in the foreground of study. I have assumed it to be more important to discover whether certain current views were true or false than to discuss with painstaking nicety the question Of their attribution. Book The Writings of William James

Download or read book The Writings of William James written by John J. McDermott and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 1388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive collection of writings by the legendary philosopher, whose sweeping body of work influenced our ideas about psychology, religion, free will, and pragmatism. In his introduction to this collection, John McDermott presents James's thinking in all its manifestations, stressing the importance of radical empiricism and placing into perspective the doctrines of pragmatism and the will to believe. The critical periods of James's life are highlighted to illuminate the development of his philosophical and psychological thought. The anthology features representative selections from The Principles of Psychology, The Will to Believe, and The Variety of Religious Experience in addition to the complete Essays in Radical Empiricism and A Pluralistic Universe. The original 1907 edition of Pragmatism is included, as well as classic selections from all of James's other major works. Of particular significance for James scholarship is the supplemented version of Ralph Barton Perry's Annotated Bibliography of the Writings of William James.

Book Philosophy of Henry James Sr Classic Reprint

Download or read book Philosophy of Henry James Sr Classic Reprint written by Frederic Harold Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy of Henry James, Sr. To Professor Herbert Wallace Schneider of Columbia University, I am under a most basic and happy kind of obligation. His scholarship in the field of American philosophy and religion is too well known for me to make further comment, except to add that his fine knowledge and critical standards were always at my service. In writing this book I consulted him more frequently and directly than any other person. My debt to Professor Ralph Barton Perry of Harvard University, the pioneer scholar on Henry James, Sr., is very great indeed. From his The Thought and Character of William James, I have drawn more heavily than from any other source on the elder James. Moreover, Professor Perry was responsible for discovering the james-emerson correspondence (now in Widener Library at Harvard University), and for obtaining permission to publish it. To Professor Austin Warren, another early scholar of James, I am indebted for the excellent bibliography in his book, The Elder Henry James. With his bibliographic foundation I went on to complete what I believe to be an exhaustive bibliography of and about James.
