Book Utilitarianism and the Ethics of War

Download or read book Utilitarianism and the Ethics of War written by William H. Shaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed utilitarian analysis of the ethical issues involved in war. Utilitarianism and the Ethics of War addresses the two basic ethical questions posed by war: when, if ever, are we morally justified in waging war, and if recourse to arms is warranted, how are we permitted to fight the wars we wage? In addition, it deals with the challenge that realism and relativism raise for the ethical discussion of war, and with the duties of military personnel and the moral challenges they can face. In tackling these matters, the book covers a wide range of topics—from pacifism to armed humanitarian intervention, from the right of national defense to pre-emptive or preventive war, from civilian immunity to the tenets of just war theory and the moral underpinnings of the rules of war. But, what is distinctive about this book is that it provides a consistent and thorough-going utilitarian or consequentialist treatment of the fundamental normative issues that war occasions. Although it goes against the tide of recent work in the field, a utilitarian approach to the ethics of war illuminates old questions in new ways by showing how a concern for well-being and the consequences of our actions and policies shape the moral constraints to which states and other actors must adhere. This book will be of much interest to students of the ethics of war, just war theory, moral philosophy, war and conflict studies and IR.

Book Kant and the End of War

Download or read book Kant and the End of War written by Howard Williams and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paperback edition (published in 2016) includes a new preface with a discussion of recent examples. Kant stands almost unchallenged as one of the major thinkers of the European Enlightenment. This book brings the ideas of his critical philosophy to bear on one of the leading political and legal questions of our age: under what circumstances, if any, is recourse to war legally and morally justifiable? This issue was strikingly brought to the fore by the 2003 war in Iraq. The book critiques the tradition of just war thinking and suggests how international law and international relations can be viewed from an alternative perspective that aims at a more pacific system of states. Instead of seeing the theory of just war as providing a stabilizing context within which international politics can be carried out, Williams argues that the theory contributes to the current unstable international condition. The just war tradition is not the silver lining in a generally dark horizon but rather an integral feature of the dark horizon of current world politics. Kant was one of the first and most profound thinkers to moot this understanding of just war reasoning and his work remains a crucial starting point for a critical theory of war today.

Book A Philosophy of War

Download or read book A Philosophy of War written by Frank Benedict and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a time of high public interest in war, especially World War IV -- the current global armed conflict with Islamic extremists -- particularly the ongoing campaigns in which the United States has been so heavily involved. In that context, it is increasingly important to provide a sound basis for understanding war in general terms without inventing new terminology to revise supposedly outmoded language. The relevance of this philosophical description of war lies in an underlying theme of TMCI - All wars are alike in the same ways, and each war is unique in different ways. There are many constants in war and warfare ... things that abide. These are the universal truths about war that need to be described and explained so that the public can better understand the nature of military conflict, the purpose for TMCI's existence. Understanding the political bases of wars, their nature, strategic purposes, causes, operations, and effects in the broad sense provides a much needed basic perspective. These are the constants that apply to all wars, all places, and all times throughout (and, implicitly, prior to) recorded history, especially at the tribal, national, and strategic levels of military-political struggle. There are also variables, particularly at the operational and tactical levels of warfare, that provide the context for individual wars, campaigns, and battles. The variables include technological adaptation and especially socio-economic trends that affect why and how political leaders either conduct wars or seek 'peaceful' options to resolve perceived threats to vital interests. Variables include trends toward casualty avoidance, 'stand-off' attacks that face the dilemma of precision strikes or collateral damage, constraints on the use of military forces, effective application of new technologies, and integration of the elements of power (sociological, economic, political, diplomatic, military, religious, cultural, etc.) into a cohesive war effort.

Book The Philosophy of War Films

Download or read book The Philosophy of War Films written by David LaRocca and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wars have played a momentous role in shaping the course of human history. The ever-present specter of conflict has made it an enduring topic of interest in popular culture, and many movies, from Hollywood blockbusters to independent films, have sought to show the complexities and horrors of war on-screen. In The Philosophy of War Films, David LaRocca compiles a series of essays by prominent scholars that examine the impact of representing war in film and the influence that cinematic images of battle have on human consciousness, belief, and action. The contributors explore a variety of topics, including the aesthetics of war as portrayed on-screen, the effect war has on personal identity, and the ethical problems presented by war. Drawing upon analyses of iconic and critically acclaimed war films such as Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Thin Red Line (1998), Rescue Dawn (2006), Restrepo (2010), and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), this volume's examination of the genre creates new ways of thinking about the philosophy of war. A fascinating look at the manner in which combat and its aftermath are depicted cinematically, The Philosophy of War Films is a timely and engaging read for any philosopher, filmmaker, reader, or viewer who desires a deeper understanding of war and its representation in popular culture.
