The Son is the immediate offspring, who mediates the reproduction of Adam in the human race. In the larger sense the Son is the human race progenerate. 10. The Son in neither sense is in himself an organism, or solidarity; but as the Son (in latter sense) progressively achieves his sonship, he approaches the actualization of his own individual personality. The human race (progenerate) is therefore, a solidarity more or less completely actualized so long, and only so long, as it sustains its normal relation to its head, Adam. The author conceives religion to be a joint product of the mind within man and the nature around him, the mind being the source of the ideas which constitute its soul, the nature around determining the usages and customs which build up its body. He does not think, therefore, that any one of its special forms can be explained without the local nature which begot and shaped it, or that its general being can be resolved and construed without the reason or thought which is common to the race. He sees in religion the greatest of all mans unconscious creations, and the most potent of the means which the past, while it was still a living present, formed for the making of the man and the times that were yet to be. The beliefs of the author are writ large on almost every page, and these he need neither explain nor justify here; but a word or two may be said as to the occasion which defined not so much the problem of the book as its scope and point of view. Some years ago he had the honour of being appointed by the University of Chicago lecturer on the Haskell foundation. The conditions of the endowment were that a certain number of lectures should be delivered in India, especially in the Presidency towns. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re.
