Book The Long Peace of East Asia

Download or read book The Long Peace of East Asia written by Timo Kivimäki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual number of battle deaths from interstate and intra-state conflicts in East Asia has declined by 95% since 1979. During the past three decades, East Asia has been more peaceful than Europe, the Americas or any continent, in terms of battle deaths per capita. When generating theories on peace and war, studies almost never look at the experiences of East Asia. Yet the region by focusing on a commitment to development, is a social reality that is less paranoid, less militaristic and more cooperative. Since 1979 there has been a commonly accepted rule to keep domestic issues domestic so that external military interference, that often caused the majority of battle deaths, was not needed. Thus the emergence of the long peace of East Asia is historically specific, and cannot be generalized by studying objective, material conditions independent of common perceptions and common interpretations. This does not mean that the East Asian experience is not relevant for other regions in the world, but that generalizations should not be attempted to be drawn from the material conditions, but rather from the lived experience and socially constructed realities of East Asia. Since East Asia is a spectacular case of pacification, and since it has not contributed much to our theories of peace and conflict, The Long Peace of East Asia is an important book for studies on peace and war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typhoons with unusual tracks are difficult to forecast with respect to whether, when, and where typhoon turning occurs based on traditional synoptic charts and numerical weather forecast model products. This typhoon turning atlas provides an additional tool to deal with the typhoon turning question by using a physical decomposition method together with thousands of plots. In particular, this atlas provides important information of 322 historical typhoons that occurred in the past three decades and demonstrates how they were influenced respectively. Contents:Variable DecompositionTyphoons Without Obvious Turning MotionsIntensity Peaked in the South China SeaIntensity Peaked in the PhilippinesIntensity Peaked in the Taiwan AreaIntensity Peaked in the East Seas of ChinaIntensity Peaked in the Pacific Readership: Graduates, researchers, and meteorologists who are interested in typhoons and forecasting, earth science, meteorology, and complex systems. Keywords:Typhoon Turning;Atlas;Physical Decomposition;Tropical CycloneKey Features:This atlas provides typhoon tracking, covers mathematical decomposition, and provides spherical-harmonic expansionClassification of the positions from tropical disturbance to a typhoon's peak intensity as well as an explanation of the diagnostic method of typhoon motions in this atlas will be surely useful as a good reference for researchers and forecasters in the practice of typhoon prediction

Book Regional Economic Integration and Dispute Settlement in East Asia

Download or read book Regional Economic Integration and Dispute Settlement in East Asia written by Anna G Tevini and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accession of the People's Republic of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 significantly transformed the global economy both de facto and de jure. At the regional level, China's WTO accession served as an important catalyst for the establishment of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) in East Asia. This was a novel development for the region, since East Asian States had previously followed a largely informal, market-driven approach to regional economic integration. By contrast, rules-based economic integration involving East Asian States was traditionally limited to multilateral integration under the GATT/WTO framework. This book systematically analyses and explains the development, nature and challenges of rules-based regional economic integration in East Asia with particular attention to the region's first four RTAs. While also addressing the socio-economic, historical and political factors influencing the development of RTAs in East Asia, the book focuses on the legal institutions governing economic integration in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as under the ASEAN–China Comprehensive Economic Co-Operation Agreement (ACFTA), the Japan–Singapore New Age Economic Partnership Agreement (JSEPA), and the Mainland China–Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). The book provides a systematic, comparative account of the scope, depth and (hard law versus soft law) quality of rules-based economic integration achieved under these four RTAs in the areas of trade in goods and services, investment liberalisation and protection, labour mobility, and dispute settlement.

Book China Turns to Multilateralism

Download or read book China Turns to Multilateralism written by Guoguang Wu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s recent rapid economic growth has drawn global attention to its foreign policy, which increasingly has had an impact on world politics. In contrast with China’s long-standing preference for bilateralism or unilateralism in foreign policy, recent decades have seen changes in the PRC’s attitude and in its declaratory and operational policies, with a trend toward the accepting and advocating of multilateralism in international affairs. Whilst China’s involvement has been primarily in the economic arena, for example, participation in the World Trade Organization and ASEAN Plus Three, it has more recently expanded into international security institutions, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This book records, analyzes, and attempts to conceptualize, this phenomenal development in Chinese foreign policy and its impact on international relations, with the emphasis on China’s active participation in multilaterally-oriented regional security regimes. Written by an impressive team of international scholars, this book is the first collective effort in the field of China studies and international relations to look at China’s recent turn to multilateralism in foreign affairs. It will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese politics and foreign policy, security studies and international relations.
