The resin is soft, sticky, and opaque, has a slightly yellow color, and a very agreeable Odor. It has a spicy, somewhat bitter taste. If left exposed to the air for some time, it gradually hardens throughout and finally becomes brittle. The resin dissolves readilr and completely in ether, chloroform, and benzene, except for the separation of a small amount of water which it contains and also a very small amount of a white, granular substance. In acetic ester, acetone, ligroin. Methyl and ethyl alcohol it does not dissolve completely unless sufficient solvent is used. With these solvents a white, crystalline residue remains which, with the use of alcohol in limited quantity, amounts to about 25 per cent of the total. This insoluble, crystalline portion of clcmi resin has been the subject of considerable study and will be referred to again briefly in this paper. Very soft Manila elemi contains a considerable amount of water, less than 5 per cent however, while that which has collected on the tree for a length Of time contains very little. Book The Philippine Journal of Science 1916 Vol 11

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, 1916, Vol. 11: Section D, General Biology, Ethnology, and Anthropology In many Of the early collections of Philippine insects exact localities were not recorded. The term Manila or Manille in many cases was used synonymously with Philippines. This erroneous use of the term Manila as a geographic designation was due in part to insufficient data supplied by collectors and in part to the fact that the record of a more precise locality was not considered of importance. Most of the botanical as well as zoological specimens which are recorded as from Manila did in fact come from Manila, but many of them were collected a long way from that city. The use of Philippines as a locality is also misleading and is too indefinite for a region comprising some three thousand islands, where in numerous instances species are exceedingly local in occurrence. In view of those facts an exact record for each species, if represented in the Bureau of Science collection, is given in the following order: Island, province, town, mountain or river, number, and collector. The names of islands are printed in capitals and small capitals. The numbers are those of accessions of specimens in the Bureau of Science collection. The names of collectors are in italics. An asterisk following the name of a species indicates that the species is known to be of economic importance, and that some thing about it is to be found in the appendix to this catalogue. A dagger indicates that the species is represented in my private collection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, 1913, Vol. 8: Section C, Botany The slight development of conducting tissue in many water plants, together with the thinness of the epidermis, has led to a widespread belief that most submerged plants take nutrient salts largely if not entirely from the water in which the stems and leaves are oating, and that the roots serve only as organs of attachment. The conclusion that submerged plants absorb nu trient salts through the epidermis of the leaves and stems is, however, as pointed out by Pond,1 based on a priori rather than experimental grounds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, Vol. 13: 1918 Recent developments in water analysis have emphasized the importance of making examinations at the source whenever possible. The work of the Bureau of Science has shown the need of field investigations and the peculiar applicability of field methods to Philippine conditions. Accordingly field work has been made one of the most important features of our study of water supplies. Owing to the comparative isolation of the Philippines, the great distance from scientific or manufacturing centers, and the consequent loss of time when apparatus and supplies are procured from abroad, we have found it necessary, to a large extent, to build our own apparatus, to prepare our own reagents for field use, and to devise and adapt methods suitable to our needs. The field work of the Bureau of Science has been carried on for three years. Because of the importance of field methods at the present time, and because workers in as isolated places as the Philippines will continue to be dependent, in a great measure, on their own resources, we have thought it advisable to describe our field methods and apparatus in detail. Our methods are based upon those described by Leighton. Several changes, however, have been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, 1918, Vol. 13: Section B, Tropical Medicine The columns in Table II under dissection of salivary glands include practically none dissected before the tenth day after feeding on the gamete carrier. The percentage with infected salivary glands is based only on specimens with infected gut. Practically every specimen with sporozoites in the salivary glands had O'ocysts, empty or otherwise, in the mid-gut, and it is believed that the, percentage Of gut-infected specimens that showed spo rozoites in the glands gives a more definite idea Of the tendency of a species once infected to form sporozoites than would a per centage based on all dissections, many of them negative. From the percentage Of dissections with ova well developed (the last column Of the table), dissections Of specimens caught in the adult stage are excluded, a large percentage Of which already had ova well formed at the time of first feeding. The rossi type indefini tus and type Giles compared in the small table appended at the bottom are included in the body Of the table as well.
