Book Thoreau and the Sociological Imagination

Download or read book Thoreau and the Sociological Imagination written by Shawn Chandler Bingham and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoreau and the Sociological Imagination: The Wilds of Society is the first in-depth sociological examination of the ideas of Henry David Thoreau. By exploring Thoreau's intellectual links to early social thinkers, as well as addressing mainstay Thoreauvian concerns such as the individual-society relationship, social change, and deconstructing society's idea of progress, Shawn Chandler Bingham illustrates the sophistication of Thoreau's sociological imagination, challenging readers to reexamine the disciplinary boundaries between the social sciences and the humanities. Book French Immigrants and Pioneers in the Making of America

Download or read book French Immigrants and Pioneers in the Making of America written by Marie-Pierre Le Hir and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long had a rich if complicated relationship with France. They adore all things French, especially food and fashion. They visit the country and learn the language. Historically, Americans have also been quick to blame France at certain times of international crisis, and find fault with their handling of domestic issues. Despite ups and downs, the friendship between the countries remains very strong. The author explains the strength of Franco-American relations lies in the diplomatic ties that extend back to the founding of the United States, but more importantly, in the French DNA that is imprinted on American culture. The French were the first Europeans to settle the regions now known as Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas--and Frenchman remained in Louisiana after the land was purchased by the United States. This book explores the effects that France has had on American culture, and why modern Americans of French descent are so fascinated by their ancestry.

Book Fourierist Communities of Reform

Download or read book Fourierist Communities of Reform written by Amy Hart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intersections between nineteenth-century social reform movements in the United States. Delving into the little-known history of women who joined income-sharing communities during the 1840s, this book uses four community case studies to examine social activism within communal environments. In a period when women faced legal and social restrictions ranging from coverture to slavery, the emergence of residential communities designed by French utopian writer, Charles Fourier, introduced spaces where female leadership and social organization became possible. Communitarian women helped shape the ideological underpinnings of some of the United States’ most enduring and successful reform efforts, including the women’s rights movement, the abolition movement, and the creation of the Republican Party. Dr. Hart argues that these movements were intertwined, with activists influencing multiple organizations within unexpected settings.

Book Critics and Crusaders

Download or read book Critics and Crusaders written by Charles A. Madison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest for freedom has always been a defining characteristic of the American people. That neither constitutionalism nor capitalism has secured complete freedom for every person is demonstrated by media announcements of slavery, oppression, exploitation, and a variety of shortcomings in the economic system. That said, and as this volume seeks to demonstrate through a history of radical commentaries, there have always been bold spirits who fight for such ambitious heights. With changing times, freedom meant different things to those who worked for it. This book in its broadest sense is a history of libertarianism. Each of the libertarians in this full study, extending from William Lloyd Garrison to Eugene V. Debs, fought for the ideal of political economy as a practical ideal. In so doing these major figures at the margins of power expanded the entire field of human rights. Charles A. Madison concludes that radicalism became an ideology in the search for freedom. The zeal and activity of these figures did much to attain the political freedom and economic well- being that Americans are inclined to take for granted. These individual chapters are set in frames supplied by background sketches of the movements each group led, and the whole is an attempt to depict and re-evaluate America's social progress without the rigor or formality of impersonalized history.

Book Pragmatism Politics and Perversity

Download or read book Pragmatism Politics and Perversity written by Joseph L. Esposito and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political project of pragmatism has focused primarily on its defense of democracy as the best political system to maintain and improve human well-being over lifetimes and generations. Pragmatism Politics and Perversity: Democracy and the American Party Battle describes this project of Peirce, Dewey, Hook, and Rorty, and combines it with Charles Beard’s study of the party battle as the most determinative influence upon American democracy. The book updates and confirms Beard’s hypothesis that the history of the party battle is a chronicle of perverse schemes and self-inflicted wounds – the most salient to date being the American Civil War – because it reflects a ceaselessly disruptive contest over the creation of two largely incompatible political states: nation state and market state. The book supports its thesis with detailed historical accounts of the formation of the Constitution and early federal judiciary, the sedition trials and political schemes of the 1790s, the frustration of market state Whigs to attract white working-class voters by exploiting their religious identities, the reckless machinations of Whig Republicans in precipitating a national crisis over a contrived threat of oligarchy and white slavery, and the ideological oscillations of the Supreme Court from market state to nation state jurisprudence and back again. To reduce perversity in political rhetoric and free up pragmatic democratic practices, the book proposes a robust neo-Madisonian view of free speech, where political actors and their surrogates are not only free to speak and write, but are also obligated to explain, retract, and revise what they have said and written.
