Book The Anglo Saxon chronicle

Download or read book The Anglo Saxon chronicle written by D. N. Dumville and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1983 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New evidence for the relationship between the manuscripts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Ranks among the best work on the vernacular texts undertaken this century. In its clarity of thought and expression it is a model to emulate. MEDIUM AEVUM G.P. Cubbin's important introduction accompanying this editionargues for MS D having been created in about 1060 by copying two other Chronicle -manuscripts, thus reducing the number of versions of the Chronicle to three, and simplifying issues of interrelationship. Strong evidence is produced for the work being carriedout in or near Worcester; and another new and unexpected finding is that D itself became the source of other versions of the Chronicle for the mid-eleventh century. Linguistic analysis considers unusual features of the manuscript and supports the new history presented here. Dr G.P. CUBBIN is Lecturer in German at the University of Cambridge.

Book From Wulfstan to Richard Rolle

Download or read book From Wulfstan to Richard Rolle written by Tadao Kubouchi and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers examine the continuity of English prose. The volume begins with an investigation of word order in the Ancrene Wisse and Richard Rolle's English epistles, followed by studies of prose rhythm in Wulfstan's De Falsis Dies; the relationship between punctuation and rhythmical unit markers and syntax in Late Old English orally-delivered prose; Scandinavian elements in Rolle's Form of Living and the texts of Be Cynestole in Wulfstan's Institutes of Polity; and the problem of word order in the Ancrene Wisse is then reconsidered. The text concludes with papers discussing manuscript punctuation as evidence for linguistic change and an electronic corpus of diplomatic parallel manuscript texts as a research tool for Early English scholars.

Book Arthur Origins Identities and the Legendary History of Britain

Download or read book Arthur Origins Identities and the Legendary History of Britain written by Jean Blacker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey of Monmouth’s immensely popular Latin prose Historia regum Britanniae (c. 1138), followed by French verse translations – Wace’s Roman de Brut (1155) and anonymous versions including the Royal Brut, the Munich, Harley, and Egerton Bruts (12th -14th c.), initiated Arthurian narratives of many genres throughout the ages, alongside Welsh, English, and other traditions. Arthur, Origins, Identities and the Legendary History of Britain addresses how Arthurian histories incorporating the British foundation myth responded to images of individual or collective identity and how those narratives contributed to those identities. What cultural, political or psychic needs did these Arthurian narratives meet and what might have been the origins of those needs? And how did each text contribute to a “larger picture” of Arthur, to the construction of a myth that still remains so compelling today?

This book was released on 2002-04-25 with total page 1060 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first full-scale history of medieval English literature for nearly a century. Thirty-three distinguished contributors offer a collaborative account of literature composed or transmitted in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland between the Norman conquest and the death of Henry VIII in 1547. The volume has five sections: 'After the Norman Conquest'; 'Writing in the British Isles'; 'Institutional Productions'; 'After the Black Death' and 'Before the Reformation'. It provides information on a vast range of literary texts and the conditions of their production and reception, which will serve both specialists and general readers, and also contains a chronology, full bibliography and a detailed index. This book offers an extensive and vibrant account of the medieval literatures so drastically reconfigured in Tudor England. It will thus prove essential reading for scholars of the Renaissance as well as medievalists, and for historians as well as literary specialists.
