Book Periphrasis and Inflexion in Diachrony

Download or read book Periphrasis and Inflexion in Diachrony written by Adam Ledgeway and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions from leading specialists in syntax and morphology to explore the complex relation between periphrasis and inflexion from both a synchronic and diachronic perspective. The chapters draw on data from across the Romance language family, including standard and regional varieties and dialects. The relation between periphrasis and inflexion raises questions for both syntax and morphology, and understanding the phenomena involved requires cooperation across these sub-domains. For example, the components that express many periphrases can be interrupted by other words in a way that is common in syntax but not in morphology, and in some contexts, a periphrastic form may be semantically equivalent to a single-word inflected form, with which it arguably forms part of a paradigmatic set. Patterns of this kind are found across Romance, albeit with significant local differences. Moreover, diachrony is essential in understanding these phenomena, and the rich historical documentation available for Romance allows an in-depth exploration of the changes and variation involved, as different members of the family may instantiate different stages of development. Studying these changes also raises important questions about the relation between attested and reconstructed patterns. Although the empirical focus of the volume is on the Romance languages, the analyses and conclusions presented shed light on the development and nature of similar structures in other language families and provide valuable insights relevant to linguistic theory more broadly.

Book A Guide to Old Spanish

Download or read book A Guide to Old Spanish written by Steven N. Dworkin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a general introduction to the structures of the different medieval Romance vernaculars most commonly known as Old or Medieval Spanish, as preserved in texts from Spain from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. After discussing general methodological questions concerning the description and analysis of an earlier historical stage of a modern language, the individual chapters in the first part of the book describe the orthography, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary of medieval Hispano-Romance. Steven N. Dworkin offers the first systematic description of the language in English, and compares its structures with those found in the modern variety. In the second part of the book, the features of medieval Hispano-Romance are exemplified in an anthology of selected texts, one from each of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, accompanied by linguistic commentary. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of Romance linguistics, Spanish historical linguistics, and Spanish medieval literary and cultural studies.

Book Early and Late Latin

Download or read book Early and Late Latin written by J. N. Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the question of whether there are continuities in Latin spanning the period from the early Republic through to the Romance languages. It is often maintained that various usages admitted by early comedy were rejected later by the literary language but continued in speech, to resurface centuries later in the written record (and in Romance). Are certain similarities between early and late Latin all that they seem, or might they be superficial, reflecting different phenomena at different periods? Most of the chapters, on numerous syntactic and other topics and using different methodologies, have a long chronological range. All attempt to identify patterns of change that might undermine any theory of submerged continuity. The patterns found are summarised in a concluding chapter. The volume addresses classicists with an interest in any of the different periods of Latin, and Romance linguists.

Book The Vie de Saint Alexis in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries

Download or read book The Vie de Saint Alexis in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries written by Alison Goddard Elliott and published by Unc Department of Romance Studies. This book was released on 1983 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first work of genuine literary merit in Old French is the Vie de saint Alexis, and later reworkings of it attest to its popularity. This volume offers two editions: a twelfth-century edition that was published inaccurately by Gaston Paris, and a thirteenth-century version that has not been published. These two revisions tell us a great deal about changing tastes and interests in the Middle Ages, and their implications exceed that of the fate of a particular work.
