Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Periodical Cicada Following brie y the history of the insect, the young ant-like larva, hatching from the egg a few weeks after the latter has been laid, escapes from the wounded limb, falls lightly to the ground, and quickly burrows out Of sight, forming for itself a little subterranean chamber or cell over some rootlet, where it remains through winter and summer, buried from light, air, and sun and protected in a manner from cold and frost. It lives in absolute solitude, separated from its fellows, in its moist earthen chamber, rarely changing its position save as some accident to the nourishing rootlet may necessitate its seeking another. In this manner it passes the seventeen or thirteen years Of its hypogeal existence in a dark cell in slow growth and preparation for a few weeks only of the society of its fellows and the enjoyment of the warmth and brightness of the sun and the fragrant air of early summer. During this brief period of aerial life it attends actively to the needs of continuing its species, is sluggish in move ment, rarely taking wing, and seldom takes food. For four or five weeks the male sings his song of love and courtship, and the female busies herself for a little longer period, perhaps, with the placing of the eggs which are to produce the subsequent generation thirteen or seventeen years later. At the close Of its Short adult existence the Cicada falls to the ground again, perhaps within a few feet of the point from which it issued, to be there dismembered and scattered about, carpeting the surface of the ground with its wings and the fragments of its body. Such in brief is the life round Of this anomalous insect. So far as is known, other cicadas appear every year, usually in comparatively small numbers, and this yearly recurrence has led to the belief that the larval existence of these species is much Shorter, if not limited to a single year. In the absence Of direct experimental proof, however, it may be true that all cicadas have a long larval existence, and the absence of well-marked broods in other species or the complete breaking up or scattering of these broods, so that individuals emerge practically every year, have erroneously been taken to indicate a much shorter term of underground life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Periodical Cicada, Brood XIV The earliest known publication mentioning the species appeared in 1666, and several accounts were published before 1750. One (g) refers to an appearance at Plymouth, Mass in 1634. The early writers noted the unusual visitations of large numbers of the insects, their emergence holes, the noise made by them, and the damage done to the trees in oviposition. Writers from 1750 to 1775 knew of the periodic appearance and inferred the length of the period to be about 17 years. Later writers were more certain about the period. Linnaeus (g) described the Species in 1758 from Specimens from America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In the spring of 2013 the cicadas in the Northeastern United States will yet again emerge from their seventeen-year cycle—the longest gestation period of any animal. Those who experience this great sonic invasion compare their sense of wonder to the arrival of a comet or a solar eclipse. This unending rhythmic cycle is just one unique example of how the pulse and noise of insects has taught humans the meaning of rhythm, from the whirr of a cricket's wings to this unfathomable and exact seventeen-year beat. In listening to cicadas, as well as other humming, clicking, and thrumming insects, Bug Music is the first book to consider the radical notion that we humans got our idea of rhythm, synchronization, and dance from the world of insect sounds that surrounded our species over the millions of years over which we evolved. Completing the trilogy he began with Why Birds Sing and Thousand Mile Song, David Rothenberg explores a unique part of our relationship with nature and sound—the music of insects that has provided a soundtrack for humanity throughout the history of our species. Bug Music continues Rothenberg's in-depth research and spirited writing on the relationship between human and animal music, and it follows him as he explores insect influences in classical and modern music, plays his saxophone with crickets and other insects, and confers with researchers and scientists nationwide. This engaging and thought-provoking book challenges our understanding of our place in nature and our relationship to the creatures surrounding us, and makes a passionate case for the interconnectedness of species.

Book Cicada Madness

Download or read book Cicada Madness written by Dave Zielinski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicadas are large, loud insects that spend their nymphal stages underground until they crawl out, climb a tree trunk, and emerge as winged insects. The adult insects emerge on a 1-year (annual) and 13- or 17-year (periodical) cadence. Yearly emergences are consistent and plentiful in certain places East to West and become a dependable “hatch.” Species from carp and smallmouth bass on eastern rivers to trout on fabled waters such as Utah’s Green River or Pennsylvania’s Spring Creek grow fat on this annual feast. But the feeding frenzy kicks into high in most years when a brood of periodical cicadas emerge in their predictable range. These insects have been underground for 13 or 17 years (identified by different brood names) and emerge en masse in mind-boggling numbers. Many of them take to trees along highways or deep in the woods where their call is deafening, and animals from birds to snakes to turkeys feed voraciously on them. Millions of cicadas also emerge at the bases of the trees and bushes that line streams and lakes, and they fall into the water so regularly that fish become attuned to them. Even fish that are not designed to feed on the surface, such as carp, catfish and freshwater drum, contort their bodies to take part in this daily buffet, which lasts for about a month. Anglers can follow this hatch and fish cicadas for almost two months and, if they understand which broods are hatching where, can fish cicadas almost every year. This is the first book dedicated to the patterns, techniques, and, most important, the science of locating the best hatches of these insects.

Book Catalogue of the Cicadoidea Hemiptera Auchenorrhyncha

Download or read book Catalogue of the Cicadoidea Hemiptera Auchenorrhyncha written by Allen F. Sanborn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a series of catalogs and bibliographies of the Cicadoidea covering 1981-2010. The work summarizes the cicada literature, providing a means for easy access to information previously published on a particular species or to allow researchers the ability to locate similar work that has been published on other species. A total of 2,591 references are included in the bibliography. The book is a source of biological and systematic information that could be used by zoologists, entomologists, individuals interested in crop protection, and students studying entomology as well as anyone interested in cicadas or who require specific information on the insects. Each genus/species is identified with the reference, the page number, any figures (if applicable), the topics covered by the reference, any synonymies, and any biogeographic information mentioned for the species in the individual reference. An added benefit to the catalog is that it is the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies and new combinations through 2012. Provides nearly four times the number of references of the previous catalog, demonstrating the explosion of data since that time Contains all references found that mention a genus or species name in the work Includes more than 300 additional references that were not in the two previous works on this subject Features the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies
