Book excerpt: Jiwan Pani was born on 13 February 1933 in a Brahmin family from Baripada in the Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. From his early years he showed a keen interest in music, dance and theatre. His first poem was published when he was only fourteen years old. Later his lyrics began to be widely sung by the common man and were freely adopted by film makers. His film on the Ravanachhaya, the shadow puppet theatre of Orissa, and his video-films on the Mayurbhanj Chhau have all been widely acclaimed and are expressions of his master craftsmanship. There was no aspect of Indian art and aesthetics that he was not familiar with. Back to the Roots is a collection of Jiwan Pani's articles which have been put together themewise. This book reflects his wide-ranging interests: the cult of Jagannatha, an individualistic and an in-depth study of the Geetagovinda, the Oriya systems of music as the third school along with Carnatic and Hindustani, his numerous scripts for dance-dramas, tele-serials and films, his deep study and understanding of Hindu and Buddhist systems of philosophy. These articles only go to prove that Jiwan Pani was a leading scholar of traditional Indian performing arts and Indian aesthetics. This handsome volume with numerous photographs is a celebration of the true vidwan that Jiwan Pani was.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance, music, theatre and puppetry were born in India millenniaago, while cinema is the most new-fengled art form hardly acentury old. But all five of them have been undergoing rapidtransformation over the last few decades and the process has onlybeen accelerated in the new millennium. The present volumeattempts to provide some exciting glimpses in the happeningscene in the current decade. Some aesthetes and experts, with substantial knowledge of theirdomains have offered and uncluttered insight into their ownareas. Thereafter, each performing art-scene is taken up andillustrations are offered so that the common art-lover and artenthusiastcan pick up enough acquaintance with the area of one sinterest and appreciate what is going around.Classical dances, for instance, are performed galore in theirnewfound strength and, side-by-side, new experiments are on: inkeeping with new tastes and heterogeneous audiences. Classicalmusic has found its firm foothold notwithstanding plenty ofinnovative attempts and fusion efforts. Theatre has found itsfirm foothold notwithstanding plenty of innovative attempts andfusion efforts. Theatre has come of age: with both dramatic textsas well as performance practices that happily commingle today.Cinema, the most nascent art, is perhaps the one most given toinnovations and experimentations. The age-old art of puppetry,on the contrary, is perhaps discovering its new potential: both intradition and contemporaneity. On the whole, the millennium mind is throbbing and excitedat the prospects of the performing arts providing not merelyentertainment, but much food for thought. This book looks at notmerely at the scene, but also behind the scene: in delving into thepractitioner s and director s psyche: to understand and appreciatehow the creative acumen is working, which is so important forappreciating their endeavours in the coming decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Theatre expands the boundaries of what is usually regarded as theatre in order to explore the multiple dimensions of theatrical performance in India. From rural festivals to contemporary urban theatre, from dramatic rituals and devotional performances to dance-dramas and classical Sanskrit plays, this volume is a vivid introduction to the colourful and often surprising world of Indian performance. Besides mapping the vast range of performance traditions, the volume provides in-depth treatment of representative genres, including well-known forms such as Kathakali and ram lila and little-knowa performances such as tamasha. Each of these chapters explains the historical background of the theatre form under consideration and interprets its dramatic literature, probes its ritual or religious significance, and, where relevant, explores its social and political implications. Moreover, each chapter, except for those on the origins of Indian theatre, concludes with performance notes describing the actual experience of seeing a live performance in its original context. Based on extensive fieldwork, Indian Theatre is the first comprehensive account of the subject to be written by Western specialists and addressed to the needs of readers in the West. It will be a valuable resource for all students of Indian culture and a standard work in the history of theatre and performance for years to come.

Book excerpt: The classical performing arts of India, with millenniaof antecedents, languished during the colonial periodand were revitalised during India s pre-Independenceconscious reclaiming of heritage. The efforts of manygreat individuals in sustaining and reconstructingtraditions played a vital role in contributing to this vitalaspect of national identity. Post Independence, thesearts contributed to a sense of national integration asthey were embraced by exponents from regions andcommunities beyond the original parameters of location, language, religion or caste. The last quarter of a centuryhas seen these classical genres draw increasing numbersof exponents from beyond India s borders and widelydiverse communities within India. Artists are drawn to aparticular aesthetic genre because of inner resonance withthe form, which crosses boundaries of region and evennationality. The sadhana of an artist is inherently difficultand success of a performer is uncertain but many of theleading Western classical Ballet and Modern dancers arefrom Asia, traditional Indian classical dance forms are alsobecoming international as boundaries fall between bordersand art.

Book Theatre and National Identity in Colonial India

Download or read book Theatre and National Identity in Colonial India written by Sharmistha Saha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically engages with the study of theatre and performance in colonial India, and relates it with colonial (and postcolonial) discussions on experience, freedom, institution-building, modernity, nation/subject not only as concepts but also as philosophical queries. It opens up with the discourse around ‘Indian theatre’ that was started by the orientalists in the late 18th century, and which continued till much later. The study specifically focuses on the two major urban centres of colonial India: Bombay and Calcutta of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It discusses different cultural practices in colonial India, including the initiation of ‘Indian theatre’ practices, which resulted in many forms of colonial-native ‘theatre’ by the 19th century; the challenges to this dominant discourse from the ‘swadeshi jatra’ (national jatra/theatre) in Bengal, which drew upon earlier folk and religious traditions and was used as a tool by the nationalist movement; and the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) that functioned from Bombay around the 1940s, which focused on the creation of one national subject – that of the ‘Indian’. The author contextualizes the relevance of the concept of ‘Indian theatre’ in today’s political atmosphere. She also critically analyses the post-Independence Drama Seminar organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1956 and its relevance to the subsequent organization of ‘Indian theatre’. Many theatre personalities who emerged as faces of smaller theatre committees were part of the seminar which envisioned a national cultural body. This book is an important contribution to the field and is of interest to researchers and students of cultural studies, especially Theatre and Performance Studies, and South Asian Studies.
