Book The Performance of Three Alternative Coatings to Electroplated Cadmium for Corrosion Protection in Fastener Applications

Download or read book The Performance of Three Alternative Coatings to Electroplated Cadmium for Corrosion Protection in Fastener Applications written by Sean Peterson and published by . This book was released on 1999-05-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army uses cadmium over a broad range of applications, including the production, maintenance, and repair of weapons systems and related components. The useful properties of this element have made it the number one choice for fasteners and similar components where corrosion resistance and lubricity are a concern. However, cadmium is a known carcinogen and poses healthrisks to those coming in contact with it. Executive Order 12856, "Federal Compliance With Right-to-Know Laws and Pollution Prevention Requirements," was enacted in 1993 with the intent of reducing the total release of toxic chemicalsinto the environment by 50% by 1999. As such, intense research efforts have beenunderway to develop a coating or coating system that provides similar, if not better, properties than cadmium. ARL examined three alternatives to cadmium for corrosion protection in AH-64 fastener applications, including ion-vapor- deposited (IVD) aluminum, a MIL-T-83483 antiseize compound, and a MIL-C-16173 corrosion preventative compound. It was concluded that the antiseize compound and the corrosion preventative compound were not adequate replacements for cadmium based upon unacceptable fastener and aluminum block corrosion. IVD was deemed comparable to cadmium based upon the torque values, fastener corrosion, and block corrosion results.

Book Evaluation of Environmentally Acceptable Multi Layer Coating Systems as Direct Substitutes for Cadmium Plating on Threaded Fasteners Tri Service Committee on Corrosion Proceedings Held in Orlando Florida on June 21 23 1994

Download or read book Evaluation of Environmentally Acceptable Multi Layer Coating Systems as Direct Substitutes for Cadmium Plating on Threaded Fasteners Tri Service Committee on Corrosion Proceedings Held in Orlando Florida on June 21 23 1994 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cadmium has been identified by the United States Army's Tank and Automotive Command as a threat to worker health and the environment. Based on already completed cadmium substitute testing, an evaluation program was conducted to quantify the performance of environmentally acceptable, multi-layer coatings that could be directly substituted for cadmium on threaded fasteners. The performance issues investigated included coating system lubricity and corrosion control performance. Data were generated from both natural marine atmosphere exposure tests and laboratory evaluations. Test specimens were prepared by applying sacrificial plating layers and lubricous topcoat materials to commercially available 1/2-20 UNC Fine, Grade 5 fasteners. Experimental analyses included realistic torque-tension curve development, marine atmosphere exposure testing, and ASTM B 117 salt fog evaluations. Program findings indicate that ASTM B 633 zinc coatings (without the Type II or III chromate passivation treatment) exhibited torque tension behavior that was directly comparable to that of the cadmium experimental controls. Corrosion control performance test results indicated that regardless of underlying plating chemistry, systems topcoated with Everlube 6108 performed as well as the cadmium experimental controls.

Book LaQue s Handbook of Marine Corrosion

Download or read book LaQue s Handbook of Marine Corrosion written by David A. Shifler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of LaQue's classic text on marine corrosion, providing fully updated control engineering practices and applications Extensively updated throughout, the second edition of La Que's Handbook of Marine Corrosion remains the standard single-source reference on the unique nature of seawater as a corrosive environment. Designed to help readers reduce operational and life cycle costs for materials in marine environments, this authoritative resource provides clear guidance on design, materials selection, and implementation of corrosion control engineering practices for materials in atmospheric, immersion, or wetted marine environments. Completely rewritten for the 21st century, this new edition reflects current environmental regulations, best practices, materials, and processes, with special emphasis placed on the engineering, behavior, and practical applications of materials. Divided into three parts, the book first explains the fundamentals of corrosion in marine environments, including atmospheric corrosion, erosion, microbiological corrosion, fatigue, environmental cracking, and cathodic delamination. The second part discusses corrosion control methods and materials selection that can mitigate or eliminate corrosion in different marine environments. The third section provides the reader with specific applications of corrosion engineering to structures, systems, or components that exist in marine environments. This much-needed new edition: Presents a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the science and engineering aspects of marine corrosion Focuses on engineering aspects, descriptive behavior, and practical applications of materials usage in marine environments Addresses the various materials used in marine environments, including metals, polymers, alloys, coatings, and composites Incorporates current regulations, standards, and recommended practices of numerous organizations such as ASTM International, the US Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping, the International Organization for Standardization, and the International Maritime Organization Written in a clear and understandable style, La Que's Handbook of Marine Corrosion, Second Edition is an indispensable resource for engineers and materials scientists in disciplines spanning the naval, maritime, commercial, shipping industries, particularly corrosion engineers, ship designers, naval architects, marine engineers, oceanographers, and other professionals involved with products that operate in marine environments.

Book Corrosion Resistance of Fastener Coatings

Download or read book Corrosion Resistance of Fastener Coatings written by Stanley R. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coating materials are needed to replace electrodeposited cadmium on steel fasteners for use in high performance aircraft. A study was made to compare corrosion resistance of ten experimental coatings, mostly aluminum-rich types, with cadmium. Several experimental coatings provided high resistance to 5% NaCl salt fog and NaCl-SO2 salt fog exposure tests. Paint adhesion was excellent on all fastener coatings with an epoxy primer/polyurethane topcoat system. Cadmium and the other fastener materials examined in this study varied widely in coating thickness on different fastener surface areas. (Author).
