Book Teaching Teachers about Law in the 90s

Download or read book Teaching Teachers about Law in the 90s written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a compendium of teacher education strategies intended to strengthen law related education efforts by providing ideas, activities, and experiences drawn from the perspectives of veteran teacher educators. The book grew out of a conference on advanced law related education leadership exploring what is known about preparing precollegiate teachers for the 1990's and beyond. This comprehensive volume includes diverse inservice teacher education programs, ranging from creative strategies for workshops of short duration to summer institutes of several weeks. Preservice models for infusing law relate education into college and university teacher preparation courses are highlighted. In addition to presentations of exemplary preservice and inservice teacher education programs, an important element of the conference was reflective discussions among teacher education faculty, school district staff development specialists, and law related education program directors. The volume is divided into two parts. The first includes six articles on preservice models. Articles in this section discuss training future teachers in U.S. government and politics, integrating law related education into social studies using language arts methods, and a model for using law related education as a vehicle for teaching secondary social studies method courses. The second section on inservice models discusses statewide law related education certification, national teacher training workshops, graduate level programs, summer institutes for teachers, and community/school partnerships such as a mock trial program in Ohio, and the national MENTOR program of law firm/high school partnerships. Book An Investigation of Teachers Knowledge Experiences Interpretations and Perceptions of Education Law and Their Decision making Processes During the Legal Navigation of the Education Profession

Download or read book An Investigation of Teachers Knowledge Experiences Interpretations and Perceptions of Education Law and Their Decision making Processes During the Legal Navigation of the Education Profession written by Mary Anne Jones and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this collective case study was to discover, describe, and understand 11 public, general, K–12 in-service teachers’ knowledge, experiences, interpretations, and perceptions of education law. In addition, the study investigated teachers’ critical decision-making processes during their daily activities and responsibilities in the education profession in selected areas such as student bullying, fights, grades, students with disabilities, and teachers’ and students’ rights. Three theories that guided the study were constructivism (Young & Collin, 2004), cognitive dissonance (Chapanis & Chapanis, 1964), and self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977). Through purposeful sampling, 11 K–12 in-service teachers from the United States with at least one year of teaching experience with or without education law training (workshops, courses, or both) were used in the study. Data were collected using interviews, vignettes, and questionnaires. Data analysis methods included coding; finding patterns; developing categories, themes, matrices and charts; using QSR NVivo analysis software; and, within and cross-case analysis (Merriam, 1988; Miles & Huberman, 1994; Sorensen, 2008; Yin, 2009). Trustworthiness was established through member checking, triangulation, thick description, and reflexivity (Creswell, 2013; Merriam, 1988; Yin, 2009). Results of the study revealed educators from various backgrounds have some commonalities regarding their knowledge, interpretations, and perceptions of education law and their decision-making processes in selected areas of education law. It is recommended pre-service and in-service educators receive education law training for initial and renewal certification. Future research should investigate other stakeholders’ (teacher education faculty, teacher assistants, and substitutes) education law experiences, interpretations, knowledge, perceptions, and decision-making processes.

Book Aspiration and Reality in Legal Education

Download or read book Aspiration and Reality in Legal Education written by David Sandomierski and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Contrary to conventional narratives about legal education, Aspiration and Reality in Legal Education reveals a widespread desire among law teachers to integrate both theory and practice into the education of versatile and civic-minded lawyers. Despite this stated desire, however, this aspiration is largely unrealized due to a host of intellectual and institutional factors that produce a profound gap between what professors believe about law and the ideas they communicate through their teaching. Drawing on interviews with over sixty law professors in Canada, David Sandomierski makes two important empirical discoveries in this book. First, he establishes that, contrary to a dominant narrative in legal education that conceives of theory and practice as oppositional, the vast majority of law professors consider theory to be vitally important in preparing "better lawyers." Second, he uncovers a significant gap between the realist theoretical commitments held by a majority of professors and the formalist theories they almost uniformly convey through their teaching and conceptions of legal reasoning. Understanding the intellectual and institutional factors that account for these tensions, Sandomierski argues, is essential for any meaningful project of legal education reform."--

Book Living the Law by Learning the Law

Download or read book Living the Law by Learning the Law written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This curriculum guide is designed to assist teachers at all levels in their efforts to infuse law-related education (lre) into their regular course of instruction. The curriculum goals are (1) to promote good citizenship through an understanding of and active participation in a democratic society; (2) to foster respect, understanding, and appreciation of diversity; (3) to develop, improve and integrate thinking and interpersonal skills; and (4) to increase knowledge of and insights into the personal relevance of law and the Constitution. The first part of the guide provides a framework for organizing and selecting (lre) activities based on concepts of power, justice, liberty, and equality. The guide presents teaching strategies appropriate to lre including case studies, mock trials, resource persons, role playing, simulations, and various games. Lesson plans are divided into levels--lower and upper elementary, middle, and high school--and provide concepts, rationale, objectives, materials, procedures, and assessment. Many of the lesson plans include handouts for student activities and some include primary documents such as the Constitution of Virginia. The appendix includes a copy of the United States Constitution. (Jd).
