This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's War Book: History, Cyclopaedia and Chronology of the Great World War In the days of our Grandfathers each country of the world was remote, no country was dependent upon any other, or the rest of the world, as we are today. The world is closely knitted together in this day and age. No Nation can be a recluse and live alone, so to speak. In the days gone by we have heard men say something like this: Let other countries have their quarrels and their wars. 'we can go on about our business regardless of them. Their troubles need not bother us a bit. The great world war, it is safe to say, has eradicated this provincial notion from the American people as well as from the people of all other nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the World War: With Chronology of Important Events When, to the world peoples, the news was flashed of the Austrian tragedy of June 28, 1914, there came no warning that it was of dread import. The nations journeyed almost to the brink of war in ignorance of its nearness. In America especially, if, a week later, one thought of the fateful assassination at all, it was only as the latest of a long series of such happenings in an unhappy empire. In Europe, men made their usual commercial, political, personal plans for August sand September, with no intimation that these plans would never be realized. Each nation had its problems at home and its differences abroad, but the settlement of these problems did not call for the slaughter, of the youth of the land. Europe was armed, but Europe had always been armed; there had been threats of war, just as there had always been threats, or worse. But in the last generation a strong sentiment for peace had spread. The more democratic nations had come to think of war between the great powers as a thing of the past. So it was that when every newspaper in the world carried the black news that the long threatened European war had begun and that nation after nation was being hurled headlong into the conflict, the wide world gasped in utter surprise at the bare fact of it. The immensity of it dazed the nations; the wantonness of it angered them. A great outcry arose against war and against autocratic power that could, without warning, convulse civilization. Book excerpt: A "War Cyclopedia" is a special war publication of the Government issued thru the Committee on Public Information in 1918. It is a handbook for ready reference on the great war, and contains in some 300 pages a great mass of information simply arranged and clearly stated. It is issued in response to an insistent demand from many students, writers, clergymen, lawyers, business men, and the public at large for authentic statements of the outstanding facts concerning the war in alphabetical arrangement. In a foreword Chairman George Creel of the Committee, says: "Other handbooks have been and will be made by other agencies; all will serve their end, for this war is not to be won by an established doctrine nor by an official theory, but by an enlightened opinion based on the truth. The facts of history and life are the only arsenal to which Americans need resort in order to defend their cause. The deeper their study, the firmer becomes their conviction. The "War Cyclopedia" represents an effort to arrange in simple form the facts most needed." Articles on persons have been left out except as the editors have deemed biographical notes to be absolutely indispensable; knowledge of American public men in particular has been assumed. An indication of the character and the wide range of the information provided may be had from the following citations made at random thru the alphabetical arrangement. Under the title Alsace-Lorraine something of the history and the character of that province now in world dispute is given, and Professor Otfried Nippold, a German scholar formerly in the diplomatic service, but now of Berne, is quoted as saying: "When one looks back into the history of Europe during the last forty years, it seems inconceivable that anyone can be unwilling to admit that the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine was a political mistake," and that "the Germans have shown themselves incompetent in their government of the people of Alsace-Lorraine." The term "Boche," now so commonly appearing in American newspaper dispatches as a familiar designation of the Germans, is shown to have originated before the war in Paris. The German assistants of Paris printers were so designated. The term "Boche" was probably also used in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, for Zola, in his novel "La Debacle," put the term in the mouths of French soldiers to designate Germans. The term "ce boche" was used, before the Franco-Prussian War at least, as equivalent to "that chump." "Tete de boche" is the French slang for "wooden paté" or "blockhead." The "War Cyclopedia" gives a remarkably succinct and comprehensive story of the execution of Edith Cavell. All of the great war measures in the United States, such as the Espionage Act, the various acts concerning alien enemies, the Selective Draft, the Voluntary Censorship of the Press, etc., and all of the institutions that have been created to carry on the activities of the war, such as the War Trade Board, War Risk Insurance Bureau, Red Cross Service, Council of National Defense, Food Administration etc., are comprehensively explained. There is also a wealth of information of value to students of military affairs concerning the Army and Navy and all their ramifying branches of service. Added to the alphabetical arrangement of general war facts, there is presented a chronology of the principal events of the war, from June 28, 1914, when the Archduke Francis Ferdinand was murdered at Sarajevo, to December 29, 1917, when the British National Labor Conference approved the continuation of the war for aims similar to those defined by President Wilson. —NDQ: North Dakota Quarterly, Volume 8

Book excerpt: The Great War is a landmark history that firmly places the First World War in the context of imperialism. Set to overturn conventional accounts of what happened during this, the first truly international conflict, it extends the study of the First World War beyond the confines of Europe and the Western Front. From the origins of World War One to its bloody (and largely unknown) aftermath, this book is distinguished by its long chronological coverage, first person battle and home front accounts, its pan European and global emphasis and the integration of cultural considerations with political.
