Millions of people schedule their lives and build identities around it. The World Cup tournament, played every four years, draws an audience of more than a billion people and provides a global platform for displays of athletic prowess, nationalist rhetoric, and commercial advertising. Fútbol is ubiquitous in Latin America, yet few academic histories of the sport exist, and even fewer focus on its relevance to politics in the region. To fill that gap, this book uses amateur fútbol clubs in Chile to understand the history of civic associations, popular culture, and politics. In Citizens and Sportsmen, Brenda Elsey argues that fútbol clubs integrated working-class men into urban politics, connected them to parties, and served as venues of political critique. In this way, they contributed to the democratization of the public sphere. Elsey shows how club members debated ideas about class, ethnic, and gender identities, and also how their belief in the uniquely democratic nature of Chile energized state institutions even as it led members to criticize those very institutions. Furthermore, she reveals how fútbol clubs created rituals, narratives, and symbols that legitimated workers' claims to political subjectivity. Her case study demonstrates that the relationship between formal and informal politics is essential to fostering civic engagement and supporting democratic practices.

I began working on The Secret Apartment as a memoir to be presented as a collection of short stories Though fanciful, these are true stories based on actual events. This is not the product of my imagination. I didn't have to make anything up. I didn't have to and everything presented is both true and correct.I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I enjoyed living them.

The intent is to capture the story of the National Stadium in Santiago--both a building and a city for a day. On September 29, 1979, 40,000 families filled the stadium's seats; around 250,000 people from all over the country's capital. The occasion was the signing of documents that transformed these people into proprietors. Prior to the event, the press circulated a list of names of the people summoned to the stadium--beneficiaries of "Operación Sitio," a public housing program--together with a plan that showed the stadium subdivided into boroughs. This book tells the dual story of the stadium and the exhibition at the Chilean Pavilion, interwoven with the Architecture Exhibition's broad theme of "Freespace." The book is organized into four chapters, each featuring short essays and illustrations, including drawings, plans, and photographs. In the making of the exhibition, the stadium's floorplan no longer demarcates the stands but visualizes another city marginalized from its center. Each section is extruded as a block, engraved with the urban fabric of the fragment of the city from which it originates. Although "the masses" have long held a thoroughly bad reputation in politics and culture, literary critic and avid sports fan Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht finds powerful, as yet unexplored reasons to sing the praises of crowds. Drawing on his experiences as a spectator in the stadiums of South America, Germany, and the US, Gumbrecht presents the stadium as "a ritual of intensity," thereby offering a different lens through which we might capture and even appreciate the dynamic of the masses.
