Book The Jewel of Knightsbridge

Download or read book The Jewel of Knightsbridge written by Robin Harrod and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1836, Charles Henry Harrod found himself in a prison hulk awaiting transportation to Tasmania for seven years' hard labour. He had been convicted at the Old Bailey of receiving stolen goods, and this should have been the beginning of the end for his fledgling business and his family. And yet, in miraculously escaping his fate and vowing to turn his back on crime, he would become the much esteemed founder of the now legendary Harrods in London's fashionable Knightsbridge district. Some years later Charles was succeeded by his son, who brought with him the necessary energy and drive to take the shop from a successful local grocer's to a remarkable and complex department store, patronised by the wealthy and famous. Robin Harrod's fascinating family story reveals the previously unknown origins of the store, and follows its remarkable fortunes through family scandal, the devastating fire of 1883 and its subsequent rise from the ashes, to the end of the nineteenth century when its shares were floated on the stock exchange, thus completing one of the most extraordinary comeback stories in the history of commerce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you read the history of any new communication medium such as the cinema, television or radio, it always happens to be bound up with advances in some underlying technology. For example, cinema was born out of the rapid projection of a series of still images on a celluloid film strip. The difficulty of synchronizing sound recordings with the resulting moving images led to about 30 years of silent films - until such time as the technical problems were solved. In between the inventions, media seem to grow and develop at a slower pace, as content producers and consumers experiment with the most satisfactory and stimulating ways of communicating with each other. In the same example, silent film-makers eventually found ways of adding dialogue through scene titles and having music played during the projection of their films. This book is about the next chapter in the history of photography, which is emerging from a relatively stable period into a chaos of new inventions. Photography as we know it is at the same point as the silent films of 1926. The transition from analog to digital photography is spawning many new ways of taking, manipulating and sharing photographs. It is also bringing photography and videography closer together by unifying sound, still and moving images in the same digital medium.

Book excerpt: "This book examines the essential factors of a well designed book - attractive and suitable type, close spacing of words, reader-friendly format - and considers how maximum-quality typography (of books or of any text intended for continuous reading), consonant with traditional standards, can be achieved by users of present-day technology. Word-division, letter-space, punctuation, different styles of footnotes and endnotes, use of symbols and special characters, the niceties of dashes, treatment of quoted passages, folios and running heads, are studied with reference to renowned authorities, including the Cambridge and Oxford styles. The famous Monotype and Linotype book faces are surveyed in their historical contexts with remarks on the qualities of the current digital versions of them."--BOOK JACKET.
