Book excerpt: This is the third Penguin Dictionary of South African Quotations to be compiled by journalist and writer Jennifer Crwys-Williams. It is an all-new, 500-page slice of pure South Africana. Containing thousands of entries and spanning the first eight years of the 21st century, there is something for everyone in this invaluable 'Who said that?' handbook. From the serious to the profound, the poignant, embarrassing and the downright ridiculous, the public utterances of statesmen, comedians, political commentators, government ministers, sportsmen and many more are given a platform in this extensively researched collection. If you are a passionate follower of the ever-evolving South African story, or someone who enjoys the cut and thrust of debate on the political issues of the day, this book provides pithy, observant and broadly representative views of what engages the hearts, heads and minds of South Africans. If you need reminding about the Hefer Commission, or want to know what ANC president Jacob Zuma thinks about God and his party, look no further. If you're ready to relive the Hansie Cronje saga or to find comfort in Archbishop Desmond Tutu's unwavering stand on human rights over the years, or are simply curious to discover what chocolate has to do with the good life or what Barry Ronge thinks about gardening books, Crwys-Williams will not disappoint you. What was it that Nadine Gordimer said about Ronald Suresh Roberts and what has Aids done to all of us (especially to Manto Tshabalala-Msimang)? This is an essential reference guide: dip in and out of it, make notes in its margins, or use it to impress your friends with your brilliant grasp of current affairs. From the 'I wish I'd said that' view to the 'I wish I hadn't!', The Penguin Dictionary of South African Quotations caters for everyone.

Book The Anatomy of a South African Genocide

Download or read book The Anatomy of a South African Genocide written by Mohamed Adhikari and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998 David Kruiper, the leader of the ‡Khomani San who today live in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, lamented, “We have been made into nothing.” His comment applies equally to the fate of all the hunter-gatherer societies of the Cape Colony who were destroyed by the impact of European colonialism. Until relatively recently, the extermination of the Cape San peoples has been treated as little more than a footnote to South African narratives of colonial conquest. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Dutch-speaking pastoralists who infiltrated the Cape interior dispossessed its aboriginal inhabitants. In response to indigenous resistance, colonists formed mounted militia units known as commandos with the express purpose of destroying San bands. This ensured the virtual extinction of the Cape San peoples. In The Anatomy of a South African Genocide, Mohamed Adhikari examines the history of the San and persuasively presents the annihilation of Cape San society as genocide.

Book The Culture of the Horse

Download or read book The Culture of the Horse written by K. Raber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills an important gap in the analysis of early modern history and culture by reintroducing scholars to the significance of the horse. A more complete understanding of the role of horses and horsemanship is absolutely crucial to our understanding of the early modern world. Each essay in the collection provides a snapshot of how horse culture and the broader culture - that tapestry of images, objects, structures, sounds, gestures, texts, and ideas - articulate. Without knowledge of how the horse figured in all these aspects, no version of political, material, or intellectual culture in the period can be entirely accurate.

Book Genocide on Settler Frontiers

Download or read book Genocide on Settler Frontiers written by Mohamed Adhikari and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European colonial conquest included many instances of indigenous peoples being exterminated. Cases where invading commercial stock farmers clashed with hunter-gatherers were particularly destructive, often resulting in a degree of dispossession and slaughter that destroyed the ability of these societies to reproduce themselves. The experience of aboriginal peoples in the settler colonies of southern Africa, Australia, North America, and Latin America bears this out. The frequency with which encounters of this kind resulted in the annihilation of forager societies raises the question of whether these conflicts were inherently genocidal, an issue not yet addressed by scholars in a systematic way.

Download or read book Stewart s Quotable Africa written by Julia Stewart and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African continent is home to spectacularly expressive human beings: rebellious anti-colonial and opposition leaders, eloquent novelists, political and social activists, comical geniuses, pensive and philosophical poets and intellectuals, as well as a few raving dictators. And the body of proverbial wisdom from Africa alone could fill many volumes. Despite being eminently quotable, Africa is not so readily quoted. Stewart's Quotable Africa covers the whole of Africa - north to south and east to west - and includes memorable statements from hundreds of speakers including Nelson Mandela, Doris Lessing, Chinua Achebe, Julius Nyerere, Kofi Annan among others, as well as biblical passages and proverbs. Julia Stewart has spent over a decade collecting the 5000 plus quotes found in this book, all of them either by Africans or about African subjects.

Book Linguistics in Pursuit of Justice

Download or read book Linguistics in Pursuit of Justice written by John Baugh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a black child growing up in inner-city neighborhoods in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, John Baugh witnessed racial discrimination at a young age and began to notice correlations between language and race. While attending college he worked at a Laundromat serving African Americans who were often subjected to mistreatment by the police. His observations piqued his curiosity about the ways that linguistic diversity might be related to the burgeoning Civil Rights movement for racial equality in America. Baugh pursued these ideas whilst traveling internationally only to discover alternative forms of linguistic discrimination in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean and South America. He coined the phrase 'linguistic profiling' based on experimental studies of housing discrimination, and expanded upon those findings to promote equity in education, employment, medicine and the law. This book is the product of the culmination of these studies, devoted to the advancement of equality and justice globally.

Book AfroSymbiocity as a Psychology of Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Africa

Download or read book AfroSymbiocity as a Psychology of Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Africa written by Ilongo Fritz Ngale and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights original and traditional African strategies for conflict resolution, based on four Basotho cultural concepts: namely, Botho (or unity of being), Pula (or universalism), Khotso (or communalism), and Nala (or humanism). In doing so, it provides the missing psychological and African cultural pieces in the puzzle of conflict and conflict resolution This paradigm, “AfroSymbiocity”, is Sub-Saharan African in scope, but will have universal relevance. The book transcends theory by demonstrating the application of traditional African peace and conflict resolution strategies through considering a historical personage, King Moshoeshoe, who effectively used authentic African conflict resolution strategies to forge harmony in Southern Africa, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book represents a major contribution to research and literature in peace and conflict studies, and will be vital for students, researchers, and professionals in peace studies, national and international decision makers, and bodies which strive for world peace.
