Book excerpt: Between the late 1700s and the 1920s, nearly one-third of the world’s Jews emigrated to new lands. Crossing borders and often oceans, they followed paths paved by intrepid peddlers who preceded them. This book is the first to tell the remarkable story of the Jewish men who put packs on their backs and traveled forth, house to house, farm to farm, mining camp to mining camp, to sell their goods to peoples across the world. Persistent and resourceful, these peddlers propelled a mass migration of Jewish families out of central and eastern Europe, north Africa, and the Ottoman Empire to destinations as far-flung as the United States, Great Britain, South Africa, and Latin America. Hasia Diner tells the story of millions of discontented young Jewish men who sought opportunity abroad, leaving parents, wives, and sweethearts behind. Wherever they went, they learned unfamiliar languages and customs, endured loneliness, battled the elements, and proffered goods from the metropolis to people of the hinterlands. In the Irish Midlands, the Adirondacks of New York, the mining camps of New South Wales, and so many other places, these traveling men brought change—to themselves and the families who later followed, to the women whose homes and communities they entered, and ultimately to the geography of Jewish history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything must face the end As the human population recovers from the great wars of thirty years ago, the young Nila Straese discovers that she is a descendant from a long lineage of dark mages, both blessed and cursed with the ability to rapidly disintegrate living flesh and matter. As she embarks on a perilous adventure, she discovers that her true father might be the legendary dragon man himself, Candor Shade—and that her powers have far greater importance than she ever imagined. As Nila continues her journey in an attempt to master her power, the three populous countries and even the tribal grasslands begin to stir. In the populous country of Lyend, the devout prince Mellwin Gowrett appears to be blessed by divine beasts to reinforce a struggling military, but inequality and revolution begin to brew in the shadows. In the People's Icen Republic, the mysterious Heldara Valendorf recruits eight new conscripts, eager to continue the path of conquest and attempts at enlightenment that her ancestors started. And in the technologically advanced country of Bayselt, the young commander Bestin Steel attempts to mediate conflict between the two countries. Deep underground, as humans continue to foolishly bicker over wealth, power, and territory, a mysterious undying has begun to rise. Humans have always craved salvation and immortality, but what does that truly mean?

Book excerpt: Paul the Peddler or The Fortunes of a Young Street Merchant By Horatio Alger, Jr.The narrator introduces the hero, Paul Hoffman, as the fourteen-year-old sells "prize packages." An elementary gambling game, he sells envelopes that have either candy or money in them; although the odds are poor, the price to play is cheap, and he performs well. Paul is a second generation American, whose late father was a skillful cabinet-maker. Since Paul's business is an odd one to the typical Alger hero, the narrator explains that Paul has pride in his personal appearance, and deigns to be a bootblack. As for the selling of newspapers, he did not care for the competition. He lives with his mother, who sews shirts to contribute towards their apartment, and his nine-year-old brother, who is lame but possesses an exceptional artistic ability.

Book Globalization from Below

Download or read book Globalization from Below written by Gordon Mathews and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores globalization as actually experienced by most of the world’s people, buying goods from street vendors brought by traders moving past borders and across continents under the radar of the law. The dimensions and practices of ‘globalization from below’ are depicted and analyzed in detail by a team of international scholars. Topics covered include the ‘New Silk Road’, African traders in China, street hawking in Calcutta and pirate CDs in Mexico. The chapters provide intimate portrayals of routes, markets and people in locations across the globe and explore theories that can help make sense of these complex and fascinating case studies. Students of globalization, economic anthropology and developing-world economics will find the book invaluable.
