Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it time to embrace the so-called “Anthropocene”—the age of human dominion—and to abandon tried-and-true conservation tools such as parks and wilderness areas? Is the future of Earth to be fully domesticated, an engineered global garden managed by technocrats to serve humanity? The schism between advocates of rewilding and those who accept and even celebrate a “post-wild” world is arguably the hottest intellectual battle in contemporary conservation. In Keeping the Wild, a group of prominent scientists, writers, and conservation activists responds to the Anthropocene-boosters who claim that wild nature is no more (or in any case not much worth caring about), that human-caused extinction is acceptable, and that “novel ecosystems” are an adequate replacement for natural landscapes. With rhetorical fists swinging, the book’s contributors argue that these “new environmentalists” embody the hubris of the managerial mindset and offer a conservation strategy that will fail to protect life in all its buzzing, blossoming diversity. With essays from Eileen Crist, David Ehrenfeld, Dave Foreman, Lisi Krall, Harvey Locke, Curt Meine, Kathleen Dean Moore, Michael Soulé, Terry Tempest Williams and other leading thinkers, Keeping the Wild provides an introduction to this important debate, a critique of the Anthropocene boosters’ attack on traditional conservation, and unapologetic advocacy for wild nature.

Book American Identities

Download or read book American Identities written by Robert Pack and published by UPNE. This book was released on 1994 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary commentators have observed that postmodern America is less a melting pot than a buffet table. In American Identities people of diverse ethnic, religious, social, gender, and sexual backgrounds "refuse to merge but insist on a multiplicity of well-maintained identities," editors Robert Pack and Jay Parini explain. This sixth volume in the popular Bread Loaf Anthology series gathers more than three dozen voices who testify that there is no single American Experience, but instead a multiplicity of experiences. These poems, stories, and essays describe in occasionally stark, sometimes humorous, and often moving terms what it means to be black and American, or gay and American, or Latino and American, or Jewish and American within this society.

Book The Still Life in the Fiction of A S Byatt

Download or read book The Still Life in the Fiction of A S Byatt written by Elizabeth Hicks and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which English writer A. S. Byattâ (TM)s visual still lifes (descriptions of real or imagined artworks) and what are termed â oeverbal still lifesâ (scenes such as laid tables, rooms and market stalls) are informed by her veneration of both realism and writing. It examines Byattâ (TM)s adoption of the Barthesian concept of textual pleasure, showing how her ekphrastic descriptions involve consumption and take time to unfold for the reader, thereby highlighting the limitations of painting. It also investigates the ways in which Byattâ (TM)s still lifes demonstrate her debts to English modernist author Virginia Woolf, French writer Marcel Proust, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of nineteenth-century Britain. A number of Byattâ (TM)s verbal still lifes are read as semiotic markers of her characters, particularly with regard to economic status and class. Further, her descriptions uniting food and sexuality are perceived as part of her overall representation of pleasure. Finally, Byattâ (TM)s employment of vanitas iconography in many of her portrayals of death is discussed showing how her recurring motif of Keatsâ (TM)s â oeOde on a Grecian Urnâ teases out the still lifeâ (TM)s inherent tension between living passion and â oecoldâ artwork.
